That is a SOFT state change. You won't be notified until there is a
HARD state change. I would guess your nagios instance is functioning as
configured...however, without some relevant configuration information

Is there a way to acknowledge all services that are in an error state on
a host?

This would be very handy. I currently have a server that has around 12
services, and if 5 of them die I have to go acknowledge each of the 5
rather then for the whole host. This takes a lot of time away from me
being able to get to work on the problem sooner.

Am I using Nagios wrong, is there a better way to do this?

We would use the Schedule Downtime but I would like it to be alerted
for once it goes good again.

I haven't used nrpe with nagios since 2.9, so I'm wondering did I miss
how things work now that we are 3.0.

I have a bunch of checks - disk, load, users, etc, but I'm not putting

Do I not need nrpe any more? Or namely do I not need to do things like.

Re: [Nagios-users] Check by ssh timeout problems

2008-11-10 Thread Aaron Segura
We had a similar problem (not using SSH, though). We use this script to
handle our notifications:
http://sweetdeliah.com/nagios/notify/nagios_notify-0.5.tar.gz

Using the templates, we do something like (or, exactly like) this...

#IF NOTIFICATIONNUMBER=1
#IF SERVICEOUTPUT~=/Service Check Timed Out/
#DIE
#ENDIF
#ENDIF

You can pretty easily modify that to be:

#IF NOTIFICATIONNUMBER3
#IF SERVICEOUTPUT~=/Plugin timed out while executing system call/
#DIE
#ENDIF
#ENDIF

Enjoy.

I have 2 remote machines that only I only have ssh access to. I have
about 5 services I check the status of. Occasionally the machine takes
70seconds to respond.

I have the global timeout set to 120 sec, but I still get 5
notifications CRITICAL - Plugin timed out while executing system call
then maybe 10-20 minutes later 5 saying it's OK again.

Is there a proper way to only send alerts on the 2nd or 3rd CRITICAL -
Plugin timed out while executing system call message (a true problem)
or better yet, increase the timeout for service checks? I never get a
host message, just the services.

Unfortunately, I only have ssh access to the remote hosts.

Thanks,

Hey Nagios Users,

Here's probably a very unusual question, but does anyone know if it is
possible (using NSCLient++) to monitor USB port(s).

What we would need to see (get alert) is when the device (headset) is
being unplugged/plugged in.

This is a call center and we are using VOIP, the agents found out that
they can get some extra slack by unplugging the headset and drop the
call. This monitoring would take place on workstation(s) running Win XP
Pro. We are using NSCLient++ for our monitoring here.

I've googled and checked forums and found nada.

Thanks,

Palle

snmpget server1 -v2c -c public -t 10 .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4.2.1.5.9691

which returns a string that is truncated:

HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrSWRunParameters.9691 = STRING: -Xms512m -Xmx1024m
-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=x
-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false -Dcom.sun.management.jmxre
THERE SHOULD BE MORE DATA HERE

Is there a limitation of snmp that I can change to return more of this
string?

Note: In all actuallity I run snmpwalk, and grep for what I am needing,
since 9691 changes...

Subject: [Nagios-users] nrpe script

Hi folks,

I have another question for you all that i haven't been able to resolve.

I want to run a python script on my monitored hosts using the nrpe
command.

On my server I am running the following command:

# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H 10.10.10.45 -c
loadscript_check_error_log

Every time i run the command above then i get the following error:

NRPE: Command 'loadscript_check_error_log' not defined

On my monitored hosts, I've specified the corellary command
in /etc/nagios/nrpe.cfg, then restarted the service.

# command[loadscript_check_error_log]=python /home/username/script.py

Am I missing something? Does the command[loadscript_check_error_log]
actually have to be a valid plugin in the plugins directory or am I
defining the action of running the script in this file?

Note: This is the only command in my config that is not working for me
so unlikely a service issue but rather something wrong with my config.

Thanks!

JJ

Re: [Nagios-users] check_load issue

2008-10-16 Thread Aaron Segura
There's the problem.

You should either modify your check_load command_line to:

/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_load --warning=$ARG1$ --critical=$ARG2$

Or change your service check_command to:

check_load!10.0!8.0!5.0!15.0!10.0!8.0

but not both.

Also, read the docs regarding service/command definitions and macro
usage.

I'm sure at least one of you may have been down this path before, so
here's my question:

I have a large list of URLs that I'd like to monitor with Nagios. At
some point I may break them into groups but for the time being I'd be
happy to have a simple check_url monitor with the same options for all
URLs. How would you tackle this problem?

Re: [Nagios-users] Monitoring which user is running a service/process

2008-10-10 Thread Aaron Segura
Yes. Note the '-u' option.

$ ./check_procs -h

check_procs (nagios-plugins 1.4.2) 1.46

Copyright (c) 1999 Ethan Galstad [EMAIL PROTECTED]Copyright (c)
2000-2004 Nagios Plugin Development Team

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Checks all processes and generates WARNING or CRITICAL states if the
specified

metric is outside the required threshold ranges. The metric defaults to
number

of processes. Search filters can be applied to limit the processes to
check.

Usage: check_procs -w range -c range [-m metric] [-s state] [-p
ppid]

  [-u user] [-r rss] [-z vsz] [-P %cpu] [-a
argument-array]

  [-C command] [-t timeout] [-v]

Required Arguments:

 -w, --warning=RANGE

Generate warning state if metric is outside this range

 -c, --critical=RANGE

Generate critical state if metric is outside this range

Optional Arguments:

 -m, --metric=TYPE

Check thresholds against metric. Valid types:

PROCS - number of processes (default)

   VSZ - virtual memory size

RSS - resident set memory size

   CPU - percentage cpu

ELAPSED - time elapsed in seconds

 -t, --timeout=INTEGER

Seconds before connection times out (default: 10)

 -v, --verbose

Extra information. Up to 3 verbosity levels

Optional Filters:

 -s, --state=STATUSFLAGS

Only scan for processes that have, in the output of `ps`, one or

more of the status flags you specify (for example R, Z, S, RS,

RSZDT, plus others based on the output of your 'ps' command).

 -p, --ppid=PPID

Only scan for children of the parent process ID indicated.

 -z, --vsz=VSZ

Only scan for processes with vsz higher than indicated.

 -r, --rss=RSS

Only scan for processes with rss higher than indicated.

 -P, --pcpu=PCPU

Only scan for processes with pcpu higher than indicated.

 -u, --user=USER

Only scan for processes with user name or ID indicated.

 -a, --argument-array=STRING

Only scan for processes with args that contain STRING.

 -C, --command=COMMAND

Only scan for exact matches of COMMAND (without path).

RANGEs are specified 'min:max' or 'min:' or ':max' (or 'max'). If

specified 'max:min', a warning status will be generated if the

count is inside the specified range

This plugin checks the number of currently running processes and

generates WARNING or CRITICAL states if the process count is outside

the specified threshold ranges. The process count can be filtered by

process owner, parent process PID, current state (e.g., 'Z'), or may

be the total number of running processes

Examples:

 check_procs -w 2:2 -c 2:1024 -C portsentry

Warning if not two processes with command name portsentry. Critical

   if 2 or 1024 processes

 check_procs -w 10 -a '/usr/local/bin/perl' -u root

Warning alert if 10 processes with command arguments containing

   '/usr/local/bin/perl' and owned by root

 check_procs -w 5 -c 10 --metric=VSZ

Alert if vsz of any processes over 50K or 100K

 check_procs -w 10 -c 20 --metric=CPU

Alert if cpu of any processes over 10% or 20%

Did you look at:

http://www.nagiosexchange.org/Notifications.35.0.html?tx_netnagext_pi1[p_view]=627

Seems that with a little fancy macro/template work, you could get what
you want. We use it for the Business logic you mentioned...different
chunks of information can be included/excluded depending on the contents
of any macro.

I just wrote a little shell script to use heredocs to send mail. This
seems preferable to the cookbook notifications, as it makes the message
body a lot more intuitive (you can format the message visually). There's
a simple caveat, the environmental variables that the shell sees are all
 prepended with NAGIOS_.

Looking at this, I added HTML email (multi-part alternative, easy
enough). I know there's a script floating around Nagios Exchange to do
this, but it did not work for me (I think it was built around an older
version of nagios and macros may have changed).

Of all this brings up a few questions I'd like to bounce off the mailing
 list.

 1) Is there a compelling reason to stick with the one-line
sendmail/printf notifications? I can't think of any (they already
shell out, so the approaches seem functionally very close).

 2) Would it make sense to build a smarter version. The first idea
that occurs to me is to build it to recognize HOST vs SERVICE
messages transparently. Thinking about this some more, and this
seems like a fairly clean way to build business logic into the
notifications (i.e., indicating specialized escalation
information for certain cases).

 3) Is anyone else interested in posting a version of this to the
Nagios Exchange?

and passive checks. What is the difference? Is there a correct time to
 use one or the other?

I have one host (a router) that will not check. Status=PENDING
(Host has not been checked yet) forever. Active and passive checks
are both enabled. It is a router, so there are no other services. Also
I used Monarch to clone it from another router's host definition that
was working. Any ideas on why it wouldn't be checking? I can ping it's
 IP.

There's no difference what so ever between these two code-snippets. Just

renaming a variable doesn't really warrant a patch, imo. Did you see
some compile-error that made this patch needed?

Nagios 2.5 running on debian stable. Packages came from the backport
collection.

If I have a group of a dozen web servers, is there a way to schedule
downtime for all of them?

I read about triggered downtime in the docs:

*_Triggered Downtime_*

When scheduling host or service downtime you have the option of making
it triggered downtime. What is triggered downtime, you ask? With
triggered downtime the start of the downtime is triggered by the start
of some other scheduled host or service downtime. This is extremely
useful if you're scheduling downtime for a large number or hosts or
services and the start time of the downtime period depends on the start
time of another downtime entry. For instance, if you schedule flexible
downtime for a particular host (because its going down for maintenance),

you might want to schedule triggered downtime for all of that hosts's
children.

but I don't have a natural parent for the group that isn't also
parent to a lot of things that I need to keep monitoring.

Entering a hostgroup name instead of a hostname gives this message:

Sorry, but you are not authorized to commit the specified command.

This is being run by the nagiosadmin user with no restrictions placed on
it.

Ideas?

Thanks,

--- David

Subject: [Nagios-users] NRPE: Unable to read output

Hi folks,

I'm using nrpe 1.9 on FreeBSD 6.x and I'm failing to get a remote
script to work. It seems that no perl script works, but I can get
compiled plug-ins to work.

The result is, which invoked on the nagios server is:

$ ./check_nrpe -H app09 -c check_raid_dell
NRPE: Unable to read output

On the remote machine, app09, I get:

$ perl check_raid_dell
RAID_DELL CRITICAL: RAID is critical.
$

I know that a value is being returned:

$ echo $?
2
$

It's as if the remote script is inappropriate for use with nrpe. I
can get other scripts to work:

$ ./check_nrpe -H app09 -c check_users
USERS OK - 1 users currently logged in |users=1;5;10;0

$ ./check_nrpe -H app09 -c check_load
OK - load average: 0.00, 0.05, 0.06|load1=0.003;15.000;30.000;0;
load5=0.046;10.000;25.000;0; load15=0.061;5.000;20.000;0;

FWIW, both of the above scripts are binaries:

$ file check_load check_users check_raid_dell
check_load: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, AMD x86-64, version 1
(FreeBSD), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped
check_users: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, AMD x86-64, version 1
(FreeBSD), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped
check_raid_dell: perl script text

I have confirmed that the user that nrpe is running as can execute
the command:

# su -m -c nagios nagios -c cd /usr/local/libexec/nagios perl
check_raid_dell
RAID_DELL CRITICAL: RAID is critical.

Ideas? Suggestions? Plans?

define as:

command_line$USER1$/notify-email.pl --HOSTNAME=$HOSTNAME$

}

The same as the new production version, however when I get an alert I am
not getting the same information on the email.

The $OUTPUT$ and the $DATETIME$ is not being sent on the email.

It works fine on the previous version.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can set SSH so that it can only execute a specific command on the
remote end.

In your authorized_keys file for the nagios user on the remote end,
prepend command=some innocuous command.

For example:

command=/bin/ls /tmp/crap authorized key info

This will tell sshd to execute only this specific command may when this
key is used to log in.

I have the same problem.

Unfortunately I do not want to put unsecured ssh keys on my nagios
server and give the nagios user unrestricted access to all my
production servers...

Perhaps I can just silence the sshd from complaining? Or even better
would be for the check_ssh plugin to work properly and do the
negotiation and then exit gracefully without logging in.

 Hi,

Is there a way to make Nagios stop writing the messages like the
following in the /var/log/messages on remote host:

 Jan 8 10:01:00 serverabc sshd[12110]: [ID 800047 auth.crit] fatal:
Read
from socket failed: Connection reset by peer

This happens whenever nagios makes a check using check_ssh to a remote
host. This entry is written in the logs of remote host to which Nagios
is trying to check the availability of ssh daemon. It looks like that
Nagios is trying to make ssh connection to check for this service but
it
does not actually do it and then it disconnects the connection
abruptly
(hence the entry like above is written)

I do not understand why does it happen on some of the machines while
for
others there is no entry written in the logs. This is just causing too
many messages written in the logs on remote Solaris machines and this
is
getting too annoying. Please enlighten us on how to cope with this
 nuisance? Thanks in advance.

Of course, you could turn up/down your LogLevel in sshd_config...but
that has it's own risks. Basically you'd have to turn OFF logging for

appears to be a FATAL error.

For example:

command=/bin/ls /tmp/crap authorized key info

If you make a hostgroup called power_outage you can do this to
schedule an hour of downtime at midnight on Monday (for instance):

# nagios_down.php -Hh -g power_outage -f -b monday 00:00 -e monday
01:00 -a sysAdmin -c Scheduled Power Outage

Or schedule 2 hours of flexible downtime starting between 03:00 and
04:00 Sunday...

# nagios_down.php -Hh -g power_outage -d 7200 -b friday 03:00 -e

We have a series of power outages planned and I'm looking for an easy
way to schedule downtime for a whole bunch of hosts.

I'd be happy to create a hostgroup with all the affected hosts, if I
could schedule downtime for the hostgroup.

Is there an addon for the Nagios UI ?
Or a cmd will be fine, I see there are several on Nagios Exchange, can
anyone recommend one over the others ?

Re: [Nagios-users] Automating downtime

2006-11-28 Thread Aaron Segura
If you're local to the nagios process, the file
.../var/nagiosdowntime.log (or .dat) contains the current list of
downtimes complete with IDs. You could pretty easily parse that and do
a match against hostname/servicename to derive the ID you're looking
for.

I'm interested in automating host downtime. The SCHEDULE_HOST_DOWNTIME
external command works very well, but the complementary command to
cancel a scheduled downtime (DEL_HOST_DOWNTIME) is difficult to use. In
particular, it requires that the caller know the internal ID of the
downtime entry to delete. Has anyone worked around this?

give a range as max:min to invert the meaning to something like
return warning only for this range. Is there any way to do non-

 other(1),
 none(2),
 normal(3),
 bypass(4),
 battery(5),
 booster(6),
 reducer(7)

Now what I want is an OK result if the return value is 3, critical if
5 or 2, and warning if anything else. Is this possible? On a related
note, is there a way to append a specific status string depending on
the return value? For example, if I get a 5 I want to set the info

Re: [Nagios-users] Check_SNMP question

I would just call 'snmpget' directly instead of going through
check_snmp. You can modify the output so you just get the data you
want...

snmpget -Oquv -c community host OID

Will return JUST the value at the specified OID. Should be pretty easy
to handle from there.

The problem with that being that I would have to customize said
script for each OID I want to query. It may end up being what I end
up doing though. How would I parse the output of check_snmp? it looks
like it returns a string similar to SNMP OK - 2 | SNMPv2-
SMI::mib-2.33.1.2.1.0=2 , - I suppose I could just look for the
=, take the next character, and go from there, though. I have some
experience with basic scripting, essentially none with scripts for
nagios, however. Thanks :)

 where I'll
find what I need to know about becoming a Nagios plugin developer?

Judging by what you said, you're already one :) Feel free to share
all your plugins on the Exchange, so all Nagios users can benefit
from them. That's all there is to it :)

If you want to get involved with the core plugin dev team, speak to
Ton Voon... See if he needs more hands on his team.

Well I suppose in that sense I am a plugin developer but I was really
considering such things as: guidelines for interfacing with the Nagios host (
i.e. standard plugin syntax?) How much output text is appropriate, performance
considerations, security considerations, style considerations, documentation,
versioning, revision control, licensing, anything else before unleashing my
plugin onto someone else's production systems, etc. Do such guidelines /
conventions exist? As far as becoming a core developer, I don't think I have
the C behind me (like any).:-)

Regards,
Alex

This event must happen in the case of ALERT/WARNING or CRITICAL result

Anybody have a solution?

We accomplish this same thing using a script called 'oncall', which will
output the contact information for whoever is on call currently, in
conjunction with a script I posted on nagiosexchange called
'nagios_notify'. It allows you to easily execute a command and include
the output in your notifications, among a few other neat little tricks.

You can define your notification commands

whatever you want in them using the relevant macros

I think the idea was to get a more detailed description on a
*per-service* basis. This was our problem, also.

The way I managed to get around it was to create a new program -
'buster'.

This has two parts - one, a web frontend that stores messages in a mysql
database, and two, an extraction utility that, when given hostname and
servicename, will spit out a message deduced from the database. This
utility is embedded in the notify command.

The web frontend unfortunately doesnt have any extra security in it, so
anyone can edit any of the match templates. Also, the extracted
messages are fixed text and dont have embedded replaceable symbols; but
they can match on host, hstgroup, servicename, status, and using
wildcards.

I havent posted to Nagiosexchange because it would require a bit more
work to be generic enough for everyone else to use it easily; however if
youre perl-savvy email me and you can have a copy.

The name 'buster' comes from 'ghostbuster', since it is supposed to use
this extra text to tell the night ops who they're gonna call...

According to the docs, this is the correct behavior.

Good morning,

For some reason, which I can't find, acknowledgements are being
retained through status changes. For example, I get a warning alert.
I acknowledge it. The service then goes critical. It stays
acknowledged. I expect the acknowledgement to go away and get a
notification for the critical status. Any ideas?

Thanks!

http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/xodtemplate.html#command

command_line:

This
directive is used to define what is actually executed by Nagios when the
command is used for service or host checks, notifications, or event handlers.
Before the command line is executed, all valid macros are
replaced with their respective values. See the documentation on macros for
determining when you can use different macros. Note that the command line is not surrounded in quotes. Also, if you want to pass a dollar sign ($) on the
command line, you have to escape it with another dollar sign

So use $$ instead of $. Unless Im
misunderstanding the questionwhich is entirely possible. I dont
feel well currently.

Anyone have any tips on doing such a thing? Such as, which

Nagiosexchange is void of such a thing as far as I can tell

Im completely capable of reading pertinent

been unable to google my way to enlightenment thus far.

Martin J. Green said...

|Think I might see the problem... look at the % used for the partitions
|that don't work (its not a %)

No, all the % columns have the %, though some
are scooted way over.

This is the one that matters, because this is the format
used by check_disk on Linux systems:

|And df -hP
|
|FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
|/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol01 137G 72G 58G 56% /
|/dev/md0 99M 11M 84M 11% /boot
|/dev/shm 3.0G 0 3.0G 0% /dev/shm
|192.168.254.1:/storage/vm 1.1T 974G 38G 97% /mnt/storage
|
|Oh and nfs mounts don't work either (again they show up when its passed
|no partition as an argument, but try and check it on its own and it
|doesn't work).

Sorry, I'm out of ideas other than trying
another version of the plugins in case this
one has a bug. The only problem I have
seen with check_disk is when an NFS mount
goes weird and the df -hP returns outout
without numbers, as in

fred:/dev/foo - - - - /dev/foo

I use check_disk primarily on NFS mounted
partitions and a handful of local disks.
Everything else handle through nagios-statd
on remote boxes, which also uses the df -hP
command, but different code to parse and
report, so it's not relevant.

Actual command line example with only the
names changed:

somesys:meo[142]/usr/lib64/nagios/plugins/check_disk -w 10% -c 5% -p
/export/foo
DISK WARNING [23126152 kB (6%) free on somefiler:/vol/vol0/foo]

What version are you running? I have:

   somesys:meo[148]rpm -q nagios-plugins
   nagios-plugins-1.3.1-10.1.el3.rf.x86_64

and as I said it works fine here.

Subject: [Nagios-users] recurring scheduled downtime?

I have cron jobs which run around 12am daily, pushing running processes
to
over 300 for a brief time.

I'd like to schedule downtime daily between 12:00-12:15am. I don't see a
way
to do this with the GUI. Would I have to write a script to accomplish
it?

Having some bizarre problems with plugins
nagios says they dont exist (or passes bollocks output in some cases),
even when Ive explicitly told it where they are.

Take one example

[EMAIL PROTECTED] nagios]#
/usr/libexec/nagios/check_disk -w 85% -c 95% -p /dev/hda1

INPUT ERROR: C_DFP
(95.00) should be less than W_DFP (85.0) and both should be between zero
and 100 percent, inclusive for /dev/hda1

check_disk: Could not parse
arguments

Usage: check_disk -w limit
-c limit [-p path | -x device] [-t timeout][-m] [-e] [-W limit] [-K limit] [-v]
[-q]

[EMAIL PROTECTED] nagios]# /usr/libexec/nagios/check_disk
-w 95% -c 85% -p /dev/hda1

DISK CRITICAL - free space: / 1776 MB (30%
inode=84%);| /=4130MB;295;885;84;5905

[EMAIL PROTECTED] nagios]# df

Filesystem

5.8G 3.8G 1.8G 69% /

/dev/hda6
32G 27G 5.5G 83% /home

[EMAIL PROTECTED] nagios]#

1) Critical
warning seem to be the wrong way round? (Critical *should* be higher than warning, right?)

2) Why
did it tell me my disk was critical its below both thresholds??

Anything I should be doing cant seem
to figure out why its not picking them up.

I
have a Cron job running every two hours that runs check_nagios and e-mails us
the result. Here's the command I'm using:

/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nagios
-F /usr/local/nagios/var/status.log -e 5 -C /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios | mail
-sNagios Status check (heartbeat) [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The
command e-mails the check_nagios output as the e-mail body. Is there a
way to put it in the subject line instead? I cannot figure it out.
I don't think mail will let me do what I want. Is there something else I
can use? I'm using RedHat 9.

had a google which seems to indicate that there might be one, I just
haven't found it, could anybody give me any pointers?

I've running nagios on gentoo and have checked the use flags but there
isn't a use flag for it...
