Please, always reply on-list. If the check is running via nagios, the command is defined somewhere. Find it and send it. We can't help without that information. There's the problem. You should either modify your check_load command_line to: /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_load --warning=$ARG1$ --critical=$ARG2$ Or change your service check_command to: check_load!10.0!8.0!5.0!15.0!10.0!8.0 but not both. Up to 3 verbosity levels Optional Filters: -s, --state=STATUSFLAGS Only scan for processes that have, in the output of `ps`, one or more of the status flags you specify (for example R, Z, S, RS, RSZDT, plus others based on the output of your 'ps' command). -p, --ppid=PPID Only scan for children of the parent process ID indicated. -z, --vsz=VSZ Only scan for processes with vsz higher than indicated. -r, --rss=RSS Only scan for processes with rss higher than indicated. -P, --pcpu=PCPU Only scan for processes with pcpu higher than indicated. -u, --user=USER Only scan for processes with user name or ID indicated. -a, --argument-array=STRING Only scan for processes with args that contain STRING. -C, --command=COMMAND Only scan for exact matches of COMMAND (without path). RANGEs are specified 'min:max' or 'min:' or ':max' (or 'max'). If specified 'max:min', a warning status will be generated if the count is inside the specified range This plugin checks the number of currently running processes and generates WARNING or CRITICAL states if the process count is outside the specified threshold ranges. Did you look at: http://www.nagiosexchange.org/Notifications.35.0.html?tx_netnagext_pi1[p_view]=627 Seems that with a little fancy macro/template work, you could get what you want. We use it for the Business logic you mentioned...different chunks of information can be included/excluded depending on the contents of any macro. ?? On Sun, 2007-02-04 at 15:03 -0600, Josef Fortier wrote: Hi All: Does anyone have any thoughts on notification best practices? I just wrote a little shell script to use heredocs to send mail. This seems preferable to the cookbook notifications, as it makes the message body a lot more intuitive (you can format the message visually). There's a simple caveat, the environmental variables that the shell sees are all prepended with NAGIOS_. Looking at this, I added HTML email (multi-part alternative, easy enough). I know there's a script floating around Nagios Exchange to do this, but it did not work for me (I think it was built around an older version of nagios and macros may have changed). Of all this brings up a few questions I'd like to bounce off the mailing list. 1) Is there a compelling reason to stick with the one-line sendmail/printf notifications? I can't think of any (they already shell out, so the approaches seem functionally very close). 2) Would it make sense to build a smarter version. The first idea that occurs to me is to build it to recognize HOST vs SERVICE messages transparently. Thinking about this some more, and this seems like a fairly clean way to build business logic into the notifications (i.e., indicating specialized escalation information for certain cases). 3) Is anyone else interested in posting a version of this to the Nagios Exchange? You can set SSH so that it can only execute a specific command on the remote end. In your authorized_keys file for the nagios user on the remote end, prepend command=some innocuous command. Re: [Nagios-users] check_ssh plugin causing too manylog messageswritten in /var/log/messages
Of course, you could turn up/down your LogLevel in sshd_config...but that has it's own risks. Basically you'd have to turn OFF logging for sshd, since the next highest level over FATAL is QUIET...and this appears to be a FATAL error. Re: [Nagios-users] Automating downtime
If you're local to the nagios process, the file .../var/nagiosdowntime.log (or .dat) contains the current list of downtimes complete with IDs. You could pretty easily parse that and do a match against hostname/servicename to derive the ID you're looking for. The SCHEDULE_HOST_DOWNTIME external command works very well, but the complementary command to cancel a scheduled downtime (DEL_HOST_DOWNTIME) is difficult to use. In particular, it requires that the caller know the internal ID of the downtime entry to delete. Has anyone worked around this? - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. If I am reading the documentation correctly, you can also give a range as max:min to invert the meaning to something like return warning only for this range. Is there any way to do non- contiguous ranges? My situation is as follows: the OID that I am querying returns the following list of possible integer values: other(1), none(2), normal(3), bypass(4), battery(5), booster(6), reducer(7) Now what I want is an OK result if the return value is 3, critical if 5 or 2, and warning if anything else. Is this possible? On a related note, is there a way to append a specific status string depending on the return value? For example, if I get a 5 I want to set the info text in nagios to be something like UPS on battery power. Re: [Nagios-users] Check_SNMP question
I would just call 'snmpget' directly instead of going through check_snmp. You can modify the output so you just get the data you want... snmpget -Oquv -c community host OID Will return JUST the value at the specified OID. Should be pretty easy to handle from there. -Original Message- From: Israel Brewster [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, November 07, 2006 1:54 PM To: Aaron Segura Cc: Nagios Users mailinglist Subject: Re: [Nagios-users] Check_SNMP question The problem with that being that I would have to customize said script for each OID I want to query. How would I parse the output of check_snmp? it looks like it returns a string similar to SNMP OK - 2 | SNMPv2- SMI::mib-2.33.1.2.1.0=2 , - I suppose I could just look for the =, take the next character, and go from there, though. This was our problem, also. The way I managed to get around it was to create a new program - 'buster'. This has two parts - one, a web frontend that stores messages in a mysql database, and two, an extraction utility that, when given hostname and servicename, will spit out a message deduced from the database. This utility is embedded in the notify command. The web frontend unfortunately doesnt have any extra security in it, so anyone can edit any of the match templates. Also, the extracted messages are fixed text and dont have embedded replaceable symbols; but they can match on host, hstgroup, servicename, status, and using wildcards. I havent posted to Nagiosexchange because it would require a bit more work to be generic enough for everyone else to use it easily; however if youre perl-savvy email me and you can have a copy. The name 'buster' comes from 'ghostbuster', since it is supposed to use this extra text to tell the night ops who they're gonna call...
