Is there a nagios project for implementing better authentication
methods? Maybe I missed it in Nagios docs but I'd like a better
interface for managing users - and more importantly, allowing users
change their passwords via the web interface.

I've done this with no luck... chasing a firewall issue as I'm only
getting timeouts.

Anything not obvious about how the firewall should be configured (out
of my control in this environment)? This is an ISP router and the
firewall has UDP 161 opened up going out from Nagios server to the
router only.

Just guessing, but if you helpdesk app accepts e-mails that would seem

Sounds like difficult questions to ask, even privately, but I wouldn't
mind hearing it either. There aren't enough companies out there doing
it themselves, or even enough offering it on a consulting basis in my
opinion. Then you have those companies that offer it but don't know
what they're doing...

Is Opsview in another time zone? :) Responses seem to come in during

Quick question I asked there that someone here might have an answer
for: Where, during the install process, is it best to use their tool
to convert your config files - and after their app converts them, do
you need to manually move them somewhere before running (if this is
the proper sequence) gen_config?

Thanks in advance, and I apologize for the semi-OT subject if it
annoys anyone...

Opsview list appears to be kind of slow, so I'll ask here for those
using it: After using the conversion tool supplied with Opsview to
convert Nagios 2.0 configs, is there any "easy" way to put the other
information - hostextinfo mostly (parenting!!) - in correctly?

The tool is alpha and doesn't work all that well yet. It converted all
of the contacts in such a way that they're all contacts for all
devices...and a couple of other things.

Can't a single host belong to more than one hostgroup? It doesn't
allow you to "drill down" but it would still provide another drop-down

[Nagios-users] status map config

2008-01-16 Thread Brian Loe
Just FYI: I finally got another perl based GUI status map editor to
run
(http://www.nagiosexchange.org/Configuration.20.0.html?&tx_netnagext_pi1%5bp_view%5d=593)
- but not without some errors (illegal divisions by zero and such).
Hopefully I'll be able to use this for the "quick" method of layout I
need.

Of course I blew away my completely finished hostextinfo.cfg file and
will need to recreate it...fun! If you know of a quick and easy way to
do that, let me know! I'm thinking I can just combine my several host
files, search and replace the field names, etc..

As I said, it looks really cool and I'll certainly get back to it. I
was hoping for an option to quickly throw up the entire
infrastructure, showing their parenting, in a quick fashion is all -
since manipulating the placement of icons via the config file is a
MAJOR PIA. You would think this feature would already be a part of the
project, really.

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagvis without DB

I got NagVis installed but I have to say, I'm fairly disappointed -
but perhaps only because I don't know what I'm doing yet and I haven't
figured out what I need to do to get on its mail list. At any rate, I
was hoping for an easy way to build the visual representation of my
infrastructure and NagVis appears to require you to add each device
and then add the parenting line too!

So, back to the original question - at least for now - anyone gotten
nagiosmap.pl to work correctly? I've gotten it to load, but its not
importing the current hostextinfo.cfg.

Thanks again!

I'm not sure how this fits in with my need to allow my users to ADD and
DELETE and MODIFY the devices defined in Nagios which THEY are responsible
for (I'm with the Network and Sun teams, I don't want to manage the Windows
servers or the security teams' devices).

And right now another add-on I'd like is a WYSIWIG map configuration tool so
I can layout the 2d map with a mouse! BUT, that's another thread.

Might have to look into what 3.0 will get us, as I'm sure its worth the
money regardless but I'm trying right now to sell the company on the value
of opensource. :)

Absolutely, and as I expressed in my original e-mail, I was planning some
level of archiving, which is a MUST for allowing non-Nagios users to begin
editing configuration files.

Users can be administered at least as well as they are via Cacti - and hey,
why not use the same system for lilac, cacti AND nagios?!

But also, last time I tried fruity it only had room for the default
configuration files. I need to have individual config files for each user
group.

I'm watching this project, and have been for awhile, because I use both
Nagios and Cacti - but it has not yet hit the point of development that I'm
able to use it...the simple htaccess file is a part of the problem actually
- what's the mechanism for allowing users to change their own passwords, via
the web?! :)

I've used subversion in the past and it worked well for what I was doing -
but that was all cron and script driven and there were plenty of examples to
"borrow" from. This needs to be user driven and I have not yet found any
examples to "borrow" from, which is why I'm asking the list.

[Nagios-users] best solution for configuration changes

2008-01-03 Thread Brian Loe
I was thinking of some convoluted solution for users to configure "their"
configuration files and them diffed or uniqed to the original with that
being saved and then the newly updated config file to be copied over the old
one and nagios reloaded, etc., etc.. BUT, I figure there has to be a better
way. What I have for host config files are:

windows.cfg
net.cfg
resources.cfg
unix.cfg
security.cfg

Each of those host config files has a group of people associated with them -
and I'll need to break out the services.cfg file the same way.

I haven't added a user to the system either - and I'm not even sure what the
best way of doing that!

The end result of what ever I do allows, for instance, people in the
security group to modify /etc/nagios/security_hosts.cfg and
/etc/nagios/security_svcs.cfg, and the changes would be saved somewhere
(repository or log file or whatever), and then nagios service would be
reloaded.

Suggestions? Solutions? It'd be great if this could be done via a/the web
interface but I haven't found one that works that well yet - and I still am
not sure how to provide users with a login/pw that they can change upon the
next log on (obviously I'm not an expert linux admin)!

Re: [Nagios-users] Net-SNMP and SNMPTT

2007-02-09 Thread Brian Loe
Interestingly, mine is set to daemon mode even though it is also
called by snmptrapd.conf.

Other than that, I don't see many differences between the two. The
question is, what are you wanting to do with these traps when you get
them - just log them? If that's the case you can try lessing the
severity level of traps that get logged...? The ini file mentions that
this is definined the snmptt.conf file and I have not done that
myself.

You said you were seeing traps being received in the syslog file so
apparently net-snmp is working enough to receive the traps right?

What's your config look like? I found stuff on the 'Net for what I
wanted to do, and unless you can do the same it can be a struggle.

For snmptrapd.conf I have one line:
traphandle default /usr/sbin/snmptthandler

For snmptt, snmptt.conf, I have the events I'm looking for and the
commands I want to run on those events. The snmptt.ini file tells it
where to log messages, and if its supposed to.

Well, good question - can you explain the stamp Nagios puts in its log file?

Looking at the log file, it appears to only get touched when this
script tries starting a new process. Obviously, I need to either
spread out the time I check the log file or have Nagios hit the log
file more regularly. In the main config file I have it set to log to
syslog and the NetAlarm log file, and to log everything that is
available in that config. I didn't see a debug option - perhaps that's
something you do from the command line - but is this the best way to
go?

[Nagios-users] nagios bailing out log messages - cause now known

2007-01-31 Thread Brian Loe
I'm running "nagios_spawn.sh" from crontab every 5 minutes. This
script, provided by - I believe - someone on this list (thank you)
uses the check_nagios command to verify that nagios is running. For
some reason, it appears as though every other time this script is ran
(every ten minutes) it fails and tries to spawn a new Nagios process
which fails and gives me the "Lockfile /blah is help by PID blah.
Bailing out..." messages.

So I guess the question now is, why would this check fail every ten minutes?

The script:
#!/bin/bash
plugindir="/usr/local/nagios/libexec"
cmdstart="/etc/init.d/nagios start"
#Check nagios with check_nagios plugin
$plugindir/check_nagios -e 5 -F /usr/local/nagios/var/nagios.log -C
/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios

if [ "${?}" != 0 ] ; then
  echo "CRITICAL:Nagios not found running..."
$cmdstart
 else
echo "OK:Nagios runnning..."
fi
exit

The config check (nagios -v) shows everything as fine. Log file shows
Nagios coming up fine. Its not sending ANY alerts, via the old e-mail
method or the new pager method I created. In alert history this is the
only thing "unusual" - and I've always stopped/started nagios the same
way: kill process -> /etc/init.d/nagios start

And I haven't changed anything in the main configuration file since
before alerting stopped, the only thing I've really changes is
misccommands.cfg.

The client app, once a message has been sent, responds with a message
saying its been cued. Along the lines of, "Message accepted - Entry
queued for delivery" so I would have expected the log file to contain
that at least.

So, any other thoughts on this? Running it in echo I see that the
command line is correct for this application, and I know that it is
configured to run correctly but it still doesn't get ran.

It is an application written in-house in C, I don't have any
visibility into it but it basically just sends a message to its server
component that then dials out to the paging company and sends the
message.

I've ran it as myself, nagios and root - they all work.

The app I'm using takes two variables:

Contact name I have defined in contacts.cfg as address1. The message
has to be quoted when handed to the app. I would think this would work

Doing what you suggest I see that it IS running the notification,
except that the quotation marks are lost (which my external app
actually needs - so maybe I can double them up?) and none of the
variables have been filled in within the quotes that are there
(perhaps because it was an echo, and the echo command wiill take
anything with quotes as strings?).

I have a notification configured to run an app and pass it Nagios

does, it doesn't work.

Any way to see deeper into this process?

Shouldn't that work to verify OUR DNS server is up and replying? Do I

I want to use check_dns for our two DNS servers, but I want to do an
nslookup on our main web server, and specify some other specific
command line options (does -A work correctly?). Is the proper way to
do this just to change the check_dns configuration in
checkcommands.cfg? What if you wanted different checks for four
different servers using the check_dns command - add a new line and
call it something different for each?

Let me summarize my response to this excellent post: I'm working on

our applications (I think I'm probably happy about that). For being in

Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios Strategies

One of the things Tivoli had promised to provide our company was
end-to-end insight of our Java applications. It doesn't work. Any
product that does this is going to be difficult to create, implement
or administer. In our case, the easiest method for verifying the
uptime and performance of our applications is to have our developers
build it into the application.

If you only want to know about the interactions between services on
various servers then I would guess you'll need to use those same
communication lines (whether that be a protocol, port, or physical
network) and do some check writing. Obviously simply checking that the
service is up on the individual can only tell you that the service is
running - not that its not communicating or having a communication
problem. I'm not sure how to represent this in Nagios, though.

For my part, I've created a host group for a specific customer. The
members of this group are all the network devices this customer
touches in the process of working with us. Its not visually
represented but it does give me a customer specific availability
report.

I'm not sure on the ease, but it seems like it should be doable now
for any service/application for which you can run a Nagios check
against. The parent being the system (ping?), the next some base OS
subsystem, next the app that depends on it (log file checks or some
other homegrown verification), etc.. Right? Or am I over-simplifying
the issue?

I do this, as do a lot of us I'm sure, in a very simple form now.
Nagios checks that my cacti server is up by checking the host, apache
then the cacti log - and they appear that way on the map as well.

That looks pretty slick! When will it be out? Is it compatible with

[Nagios-users] previously supplied script

2006-11-16 Thread Brian Loe
I can find no record of the original e-mail, but whomever it was that
was nice enough to post their availability reporting script could
provide a way for the script to either send an e-mail rather than
create a file - or, better, both - I would again appreciate it.

I played with it as much as I know how and its not enough...couldn't
get any output to anything other than the file.

When you all report on availability, how do you go about working out
any scheduled maintenance periods?

For instance, I'd like to report on a specific hostgroup. The time
period is 24x7 except 2-6 on Sundays.

Ideas?

[Nagios-users] reporting

2006-11-14 Thread Brian Loe
I've played with a couple of reporting scripts from nagios exchange -
with little success. Does anyone have one that they KNOW works on the
latest, stable version of Nagios and can provide availability for a
particular hostgroup? Or, conversely and probably preffered, a list of
outages for each host in a particular hostgroup?

Changing polling interval to 2 minutes was a no-brainer, I guess it
had just been awhile since I messed with the configuration files.

[Nagios-users] customer request possible?

2006-11-14 Thread Brian Loe
I have a customer that would like us to monitor all devices that
involve the services we're selling them, and provide them with an
availability report. I've created a host group with just those devices
but the outstanding issues are:

1. Need to change the polling/pinging interval to 2 minutes. I assume
I will need to do that through their individual host records?

2. Need to export an availability report on a weekly basis.

I have had no luck in editing the one reporting script I have to use
the availability cgi - has anyone else? I would need it to run a
simple report for the previous week for this specific hostgroup, etc.,
etc... It can't be that difficult I'm sure - I'm just not getting
it...

Close, I think
Problem1: Pings take too long (longer than the configured threshold)
and/or 1 of 3 pings is dropped.
Action1: Wait for second check, if result is same, alert.

Problem2: All pings fail.
Action2: Alert.

In other words, pings taking too long or one or two failures might
mean the network between Nagios and device is congested or having
issues not relating directly with that device. This is important to
know but it might also clear up by next check. If all pings fail
completely, that's a good indication the device has gone down and I
want to be alerted immediately to that.

This problem wouldn't even be an issue if our network wasn't
so...well, whatever. Fixing that will take some time though.

Do these solutions still hold true or am I possibly missing something

[Nagios-users] alert time

2006-09-18 Thread Brian Loe
So, for a noob, whats the easiest way to make sure a host alert is
sent the FIRST time Nagios doesn't get a response to a ping?

Perhaps it should be a service alert - but either way, you get my
meaning. I don't want to wait 15 minutes to find out a router went
down. Not EXACTLY sure how to fix it though since the service command
line has thresholds and I don't necessarily want to get pages the
first time a ping takes 300ms.

Re: [Nagios-users] (No output!) Errors in Nagios 2.4

Assuming you stop/started the service after modifying your hosts and
services config files, is it possible you used the rc/init script?
Have you killed the service (with the kill command) and then restarted
it yet? I'd try that...

I was under the impression that nagios will spawn more processes
during checks so that it can check several hosts at a time.

Again, I need to look at my configs. I'm thinking that in my host{}
definitions I have the dns name for "name" (perhaps thats the entry)
and IP for hostaddress... Definately going to have to check this out.

Well, there you go. :) I'm new to Nagios so perhaps this too is a
stupid question, but when you configure a check, can't you use a
variable for the host in the check command line? I guess I need to go
look at my config files again

Re: [Nagios-users] nmap

2006-08-17 Thread Brian Loe
Couldn't you write a script that diffs nmap results and report "0" if
diff doesn't come back with anything and "1" otherwise? nmap could be
cronned to run hourly - or so - and the results diffed with a baseline
file resulting in the code which nagios can cat... or something.

Sorry, not a developer but this seems easy enough for someone who is,
and I'd like to have it myself. :)

[Nagios-users] problem with checks

2006-08-15 Thread Brian Loe
I recently reloaded the nagios process (/etc/init.d/nagios reload) and
now everything is failing. At first the checks got an error 127 and
now just "No output!". The permissions look correct to me on all the
checks but... I have no idea what the problem is.

My problem with your plugin is that I just get an empty e-mail, which
I'm forwarding here (less my company's warnings of confidentiality and

I've downloaded this plugin! Problem is, as I understand it, its not
compatible with the newest version of Nagios - correct? I would
certainly like to use it though - and if you can provide me with some
help that would be "most excellent"!

Before I read that somewhere, I had tried to implement it. Clicking
on the link I added to the menu I would only get a bar and the
following errors in Apache logs for that virtual site:

[Thu Aug 10 08:19:48 2006] [error] [client 10.117.2.57] single
argument form of new() no longer supported, referer:

That's possible, but probably because of the way Apache is configured
(vhosts and aliases and such)... still working on getting the URL I
guess.

Couldn't do it exactly that way, but in IE I can go to the report
page, right click and choose properties - then copy the URL.

Anyone want to volunteer to help me create the script? I need to wget
the URL with authentication, attach the page to an e-mail, get rid of
the page...doesn't sound that difficult but perhaps there's a way
better than some silly shell script I'd throw together.

How'd you get the URL? I thought that seemed like a simple enough idea
but then quickly realized that you just get a button to create the
report - once its built the URL doesn't appear in the address bar,
presumably because its a temporary page (??). I would definitely like
a weekly and monthly report - but I'd also like to pick and choose the
options I want as well (presumed state, for instance).

Does anyone have a solution for reporting (via printable views - or
better, e-mail) in the 2.x version of Nagios. I'm really needing the
availability report sent at a specific interval...
