[Nagios-users] Host and ping service notification

2008-04-01 Thread D.Parise
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Dear All,

I have configured my hosts with the check-host-alive with check_ipmc and
all of them have also the ping service.

Now I receive the notifications when the ping is down, but not the
notifications for the host down, and I do not understand why. Often the ping do
not go down for long, maybe it is not enought to put the host down. The second
question is what's the real point to have the ping service configured on all
the hosts if the host check is done via icmp.

Thanks you for your answers and best regards,

service checks are ran before host checks. So, ping service might be down but
the host might still be up. It also depends on how many times you specify a
service to be checked before it goes to critical state. Nagios will run all
service checks before it runs host check.

Sounds like you might want to disable active checks for the host, enable
passive checks and submit a corresponding passive host check when you
submit your passive service check.

Subject: Re: [Nagios-users] check host alive by passive

Hello Davide,

It sounds like you need to make your service check into a host check.
You can do this by changing your check_host command in your hosts.cfg
file.  For example:

Change the default:

define host{
...
check_command   check-host-alive
...
}

to:

define host{
...
check_command   check-host-alive-custom
...
}

and in your checkcommands.cfg file add the check thusly:

define command{
command_namecheck-host-alive-custom
command_line   path/to/command
}

This will turn your service check into a host check. You will still
need to leave your service check in place because host checks are not
performed unless a service check comes back with an error. This way,
when the service check fails, the host will immediately be checked.
And since the two checks are the same, the host check will also fail,
and give you the host down status you require.

Janet

Hi there,

We are currently running nsclient++ 0.2.7 on ~20 windows 2003 servers.
After 3-4 weeks I have not yet seen any crashes.

Our servers are currently on Servicepack 1.

We also run nsclient on ~200 servers.
I have seen nsclient crash when other services try to pinch it's port.
Sophos AV was the main culprit.

The NRPE functionality with nt_check backwards compatibility sold us on
nsclient++, we are
currently (slowly) upgrading all servers to nsclient++.

I will of course post should we see any crashes.

1. more thing, I did note that the systray icon feature did not work for
us - I guess it may be a bit flaky.

Thanks,

After adding mail into the command it works. What may have caused it to not
be there?
I didn't specify --with-mail=dir when I compiled nagios. Can that be the
problem???

Hi,
have a look at this part of the error:

Nagios process! | -s ** PROBLEM alert

The mail command is missing, I think.

Mit freundlichem Gruß

Betreff: [Nagios-users] Problem with notify-by-email

Hi,

When Nagios is trying to send me an e-mail I get the following
error in the event log:

[03-14-2007 12:02:36] Warning: Attempting to execute the
command /usr/bin/printf %b * Nagios 2.7 *\n\nNotification Type:
PROBLEM\n\nService: Nagios\nHost: \nAddress: ***.***.***.***\nState:
CRITICAL\n\nDate/Time: Wed Mar 14 12:02:36 CET 2007\n\nAdditional
Info:\n\nNAGIOS CRITICAL: Could not locate a running Nagios process! | -s **
PROBLEM alert - /Nagios is CRITICAL ** [EMAIL PROTECTED] resulted in a
return code of 127. Make sure the script or binary you are trying to execute
actually exists...

I use Nagios 2.7 with Debian and Exim4. Exim is working normal
and sents a e-mail when I do the following test:
printf text | mail -s subject e-mail address

The notify-by-email command is present in the commands.cfg

I didn't find any help on google etc..
any idea?
