[Nagios-users] NDOUtils: high mysql (cpu) Load, after moving from vmware to kvm

2009-09-21 Thread Denny Schierz
hi,

Our Nagios was running in a Vmware machine with a normal load round
about 1 or less on 4 CPU baremetal. We moved now from Vmware Server to
KVM on a CentOS. Nagios runs on Debian Lenny system with Centreon 2.x.

I don't now enough about MySQL, to solve my problem, so i need a little
bit help. After stopping NDO, the load is perfect 1 .

After a lot of searching, i found an entry to create a index:

create index nagios_servicechecks_idx1 on nagios_servicechecks
(start_time, instance_id);

but this helps only a few minutes (10-15min). So, any suggestions?

the only thing you need, are plugins which produce performance data.
Have a look and run the plugin from the console. The most plugins have

So, if you told nagios, to work with them (take look on the nagios.cfg

 2. Do the above definitions need to be individually applied to all

with Nagios 3, you can use the template to add the action_url. But
with 2.6 you have to add the action_url to every host/service, if want a

[Nagios-users] Redundancy Nagios3 with NDO MySQL

2008-03-12 Thread Denny Schierz
hi,

just some questions.

we have Nagios3rc3 with NDO utils for NagVis and other addons. If i want
to clone the master, two ndo installations can read/write into one MySQL
db. I don't know enough to say, it works or not. MySQL is allready HA.

I want to submit the service checks via nsca and following the Nagios3
redundancy howto. But what is with the historie and graphs (PnP)?

(both runs under freebsd 6.2, so no drbd available)

[Nagios-users] HA with Nagios3 + NDOutils (mysql) (+ OTRS) ?

2008-03-09 Thread Denny Schierz
hi,

i've never used freeBSD (6.2) before and now im build a Nagios3(rc3)
server to make checks from some server (active_checks), switches
(active_checks), some other devices (passive_checks) and so on. Under
Linux i know, how to build HA setups (like heartbeat and DRBD), but i
dont' know anything from freeBSD.

So, what is the prefered way with MySQL as backend via NDOutils (and
NagiosQL, OTRS (ticket system) Nagviz etc. pp.)

any hints could be usefull :-)

After a sort overview, it seems, that i have a problem, cause the client

[Nagios-users] passive or active checks over ssh satellite (cause of dmz)

2008-02-22 Thread Denny Schierz

hi,

we have a DMZ with a lot of servers and services. The only way, to
reach them from the nagios view, is over SSH. Actually we use the
ssh_check plugin that calls a script on the satellite server. These
scripts checks the services and hosts, write the results down into a
file and pipe them via nagios-cmd or ncsa into nagios.

These scripts are grown over the time and not very easy to read. So,i
want to make it easier. My idea is:

Nagios: 192.168.197.100
SSH-SAT: 192.168.197.101/192.168.198.100
DMZPC01: 192.168.198.101

NAGIOS --check_by_ssh!check_dmzpc01_diskfree-- - SSH-SAT -
nrpe_client!check_diskfree -h dmzpc01_diskfree - DMZPC01 - NRPE
Daemon - command[check_disk]=/usr

In a view sentences: Nagios have to use the ssh_check plugin with the
argument to check from server dmzpc01 the disks.

On DMZPC01 runs a nrpe daemon and i can connect via the nrpe_check
plugin to get information from SSH-SAT.

Nagios can connect via SSH and execte the nrpe_check plugins, like the
following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ ../libexec/check_by_ssh -H ssh-sat -C
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H dmzpc01 -c check_hda5

DISK OK - free space: / 432 MB (22% inode=73%);| /=1480MB;1612;1813;0;2015

So, now i have to define a command and here is,where i have some problems.

Is here anybody, who can me give some hints?

i tried a similar like these test, which also does not work:

define command{
command_name ssh_check_dmz_icmp
command_line $USER1$/check_by_ssh -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -C
$USER1$/check_icmp -H $ARG1$
}

My hope was, that $ARG1$ could be the IP from the hostconfig. But i'm
sure, that is wrong I got back only 0 in nagios webfrontend...

Re: [Nagios-users] passive or active checks over ssh satellite (cause of dmz) [solved]

2008-02-22 Thread Denny Schierz
hi,

reading my own words could be useful, sometimes ;-)

for google:

Example for disk:

commands.cfg

#

[...]

define command{
   command_name ssh_check_dmz_icmp
   command_line $USER1$/check_by_ssh -H ssh-sat -C $USER1$/check_icmp
-H $ARG1$
}

define command{
   command_name ssh_check_dmz_rootdisk
   command_line $USER1$/check_by_ssh -H ssh-sat -C $USER1$/check_nrpe
-H $ARG1$ -c check_hda5
}

#

host.cfg

#

define host{
  use linux-server
  host_name dmzpc01
  address 192.168.198.101
  check_command ssh_check_dmz_icmp!dmzpc01
}

define service{
  use generic-service
  host_name dmzpc01
  service_description Check rootdisk
  check_command ssh_check_dmz_rootdisk!dmzpc01
}

Mabe, you can use sh_check_dmz_rootdisk!$HOSTADDRRESS$, but not tested now.
Don't forget to configure nrpe on dmzhost01. Also it is in most cases
better to use IP, instead of hostnames!

[Nagios-users] check_by_ssh - best timeout options ...

2006-07-26 Thread Denny Schierz
hi,

i check the most servers (most hostnamedyndns.org) via check_by_ssh
and it is working, but sometimes i get messages like this:

CRITICAL - Plugin timed out while executing system call

or:

(No output!)

but, after the next checks, its up again. I think, the problem is, when
the remote host is changing the IP, or internet line is close etc.

I search for better handling in these cases. What are the best?

[Nagios-users] Need documention for hosts configuration

2006-07-22 Thread Denny Schierz
hi,

i'm glad to getting nagios 2.5 working with nrpe too. Now i'am writing a
 howto on a german wiki.
My problem is, that the documention from nagios (html 2.x on the
website) is poorly written, meaning it has a bad structure and i need
much time to find, what i searching for.

So, to let me and my readers understand, what for options are possible
in the hosts config, like in the minimal.cfg i want to write it down,
on examples. Most things are selfexplained but, some not. Can somebody
write a few lines, about the following lines, or show me the right part
from the offi. docu. on the nagios website?

max_check_attempts  10
notification_interval   120
notification_optionsd,r

is_volatile 0
normal_check_interval   5
retry_check_interval1
contact_groups  admins
notification_optionsw,u,c,r
notification_interval   960
check_command   check_ping!100.0,20%!500.0,60%

on these last line, i don't know, where i have o set a ! for example
from the dns_check:

./check_dns -H heise.de -s 192.168.1.1
DNS OK: 0.018 seconds response time. heise.de returns
193.99.144.80|time=0.017630s;;;0.00

so looks the line from the bash, but i wrote something as command and
expecting, that it is wrong:

define command{
command_name check-resolv-dns
command_line$USER1$/check_dns -H www.heise.de -s $HOSTADDRESS$
}

define service{
use generic-service ; Name
of service template to use
host_name   win2k3
service_description DNS_resolv
is_volatile 0
check_period24x7
max_check_attempts  3
normal_check_interval   2
retry_check_interval1
contact_groups  admins
notification_interval   240
notification_period 24x7
notification_optionsw,u,c,r
check_command   check_dns!heise.de
}

i know, i have had it hardcoded, but check_dns resolv the address from
the yahoo server, not heise.de ...

So, if somebody can explain my mistakes, i can writing a good howto :-)

[Nagios-users] minimal install for remote host

2006-07-19 Thread Denny Schierz
hi,

i was able to get nagios 2.5 running on a special status host. My goal
is to check remote hosts from different customers via internet.
I want to test nrpe, but i saw, that i have to install nagios an every
remote host. So, what is the best way to do that. I want to check in
most cases, mysql, mail, imap/pop, amavisd-new and apache2.

Does somebody create already a minimal nagios installation for that,
without webinterface or such fancy things on the remote host?

Most hosts are Debian based and Gentoo. For Debian i can create *.deb.

 You shouldn't need to install Nagios on every host you want to check
 with NRPE. NRPE should only require the nagios-plugins and some Perl items.

that's great :-) Don't now why, but i didn't search for nrpe packages,
cause i build nagios from source. The debian packages are from 2004, so
i compiled nrpe from source too.

thanks for switching the light on :-)

[Nagios-users] nrpe: incorrect command line arguments supplied

2006-07-19 Thread Denny Schierz
hi,

first: i have on all remote hosts the same nrpe version from plugin,
daemon and with ssl.

NRPE seems to be working, but something went wrong:

Current Load UNKNOWN (No output returned from plugin)
Root Partition UNKNOWN Incorrect command line arguments supplied

my nagios minimal.cfg:

## space ##

#mx02 space

define service{
use generic-service ; Name of service template to use
host_name   mx02
service_description Root Partition
is_volatile 0
check_period24x7
max_check_attempts  4
normal_check_interval   5
retry_check_interval1
contact_groups  admins
notification_optionsw,u,c,r
notification_interval   960
notification_period 24x7
check_command check_nrpe!check_disk -w 20 -c 10 -p /dev/sda1
}

## load ##

# MX02

define service{
use generic-service ; Name of service template to use
host_name   mx02

notification_optionsw,u,c,r
notification_interval   960
notification_period 24x7
check_command check_nrpe!check_load -w 15,10,5 -c 30,25,20
}

my nrpe config:

command[check_load]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_load -w 15,10,5 -c
30,25,20

command[check_disk1]=/usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_disk -w 20 -c 10
-p /dev/sda1

The plugins are on both systems the same. What is my mistake?

here was my error. I had to remove the arguments from the line. Now it
is working. I know that i can use args, if i compiled the option into
nrpe :-)

Re: [Nagios-users] Check_imap/pop with username login

hi,

Patrick Morris schrieb:

 There are a few ways to handle this, but the quick-n-dirty one I'm using
 now for this is to run fetchmail against it and check the return code.

i found a phyton script, that can do the job, but its the same like with
mysql: the password is readable as process, so it can be a problem with
local users.
