[Nagios-users] check_host_alive warns for wrong IP

2007-12-04 Thread Dinçer Kavraal
Hi all,
I think check_host_alive has got sth wrong with it.

I have controlled output of "check_host_alive" when I saw my host down. It
was saying: (on page nagios/cgi-bin/extinfo.cgi? bla bla for host detail)
CRITICAL - Host Unreachable (85.29.1.77)

However the fact is that I have grepped all relevant nagios configuration
files and never seen an IP like "85.29.1.77", I just defined host with IP
.26.77. On the other hand, I tried to run it on console, expectedly it said:
CRITICAL - Host Unreachable (85.29.26.77)

Any ideas?

By the way,
Kernel IP routing table

[Nagios-users] about Nagios Log Stats Process

2007-06-01 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Hi people,
Does anybody know how Nagios behaves totally when reading logs for graphing
stats? I mean, If I change rotation time for logs, what does Nagios do to
find related log files according to related timeperiod for stats?

If not clear, a sample:
- Log rotation time 1 day (as default)
- I have some logs (log of a whole month long e.g.)
- I change rotation time to 5 days
- 10 days later for instance, I would like stats for host01 availability for
last month.

How does Nagios find relevant log files? I know it is a bit complicated
situation however, our mission is to serve for generality :)
Isn't it a bit confusing? Or I do think so unrealistic?

Thanks,
Dinçer

Re: [Nagios-users] host downtime

2007-04-03 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

You might missed sth configuring downtime.
- How much is your down time expected?
- When?

and how are you defining this?

Could you give details?

2007/4/3, James Tran <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

For some reason i'm scheduling downtime for hosts but i'm still getting
service notifications...
Anyone know why?

It's kinda of annoying.
I mean if the host is scheduled for downtime all the services for that
host shouldn't be notifying me right?

any help would be great thx.

Re: [Nagios-users] Notifications and Event-Handlers

2007-03-30 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

It's not dumb. I once try it. Answer is: no!
They are not fired.

To whom it may concern:
Q: Why should somebody try this?
A: Sometimes notifications can not be controlled through escalations easily.
So you'd like to close all escalations and allow some of them. That's why.
Anyway, no way to do it. If you disable for a hostgroup (for instance)
notifications, then escalations and other settings related are ommitted.

2007/3/30, [EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Dumb question - If I have global notifications disabled, will
event-handlers be able to fire?

Re: [Nagios-users] is there a way to set host min_check_attempt?

2007-03-27 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Thanks Thomas, actually I was very much trying to do at least 5-checks
before changing DOWN status of an host. But this was a problem of "blocking"
strategy of Nagios v1 and v2. Thus, I am waiting for v3. In fact it is in
alpha stage at the moment. I can't trust it -as you can guess why- before
even a few beta stages.

I will be looking for a way to prevent "blocking" host check strategy.

Before this, I tried to close active checks of hosts and prevent any host
checks. Any host had only one service which was host check (as a service).
So those could be parallelised, and I did. But it borns a problem.
UNREACHABLE status does not exist for me anymore.
After that, I tried to configure service depedency. However, then, only
notifications were disabled of child services. But I was expecting an
UNREACHABLE status for those.

Shortly - Summary
I am asking for a way to set UNREACHABLE status for child services under
service dependency.

Thanks,
Dinçer

2007/3/26, Thomas Stocking <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hi Dinçer,
Not quite sure I follow your logic, but it looks like you want to
control what happens with Nagios host checks.
Nagios will check the host if and when a service on that host enters a
non-ok state. It then executes the plugin that you select as a
host-alive check. If it comes back with a non-ok status on the first
attempt, it will try again, up to the max number of attempts. If all
attempts fail, it sets to host to state DOWN (or UNREACHABLE - see the
parent directive). It then send a host alert, and notifications, if
configured.
If it comes back OK, it stops checking the host, and sets it to OK. Then
you will get a service alert, notifications, etc.

So, one way to be sure that you always ping 5 times when you are
checking a host is to configure the plugin you use for the host-alive
check to send 5 pings on each attempt:

$USER1$/check_icmp -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -w 3000.0,80% -c 5000.0,100% -n 5
for example.

You could also use a passive check to set the host state. This is a
pretty advanced topic, but will give you great control over host checks.

One thing to consider is that Nagios 2.x and 1.x use a "blocking" host
check. That is, whenever a host check is performed (actively), Nagios
stops doing pretty much everything else. Thus it makes sense to optimize
your active host checks. The longer they take, the larger the affect on
overall latency. This will be fixed in v3, or so I have read. I have not
tried v3 yet :)

I think it won't. Anyway, take a backup :) then reconfigure and make it.

Thank you, I think it's #2. When I compiled it, I ran the following

--with-htmurl=/nagios/--with-nagios-user=nagios --with-nagios-group=nagios

As you can see, I didn't put a space between htmurl=/nagios/ and –with…so
the path the images tries to find is
/nagios/--with-nagios-user=nagios/images.

Can I just run the configure command again with the correct info? Will
this overwrite any files I have already?

Then, there are two options left (I suppose).

1) You have sth wrong with your browser. It might refuse asking you
username and password. However, then, how are you available to see the web
page? So, only one option left :)

2) On the images which are not shown on the web page, right-click and

should be http://-host-address-/nagios/images/.png

Is it so? Can you see any image with this URL on your own? (copy-paste the

If so, it means you have given path values wrong when compiling nagios.
Anyway, check it then we can recompile it with right values.

[Nagios-users] is there a way to set host min_check_attempt?

2007-03-25 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Hi, (as to be numbers are only sample)
We know that host assumed to be DOWN if host does not reply (or timeout) for
5 times successively (I mean 5 distinct checks in order).
Do you know how to make nagios assume that host is UP only and only if host
says OK to ping check for 5 times successively after a HARD-DOWN status?

2007/3/25, Andy Shellam <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Also, in your check_ping command definition, you're requesting the host
respond within 30ms to be classed as up and OK.

This seems awfully quick - personally I request 1000ms (1 second) to
give it a fair amount of time to respond. If the host/router/whatever
is busy, it could take slightly longer than 30ms to reply, causing a
warning (or longer than 60ms to be 'down'.)

Andy.

Re: [Nagios-users] WRONG STATUS

2007-03-24 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Hi Grace,
Try to increase max_check_attemps. Let nagios accept a host is in
DOWN status after at least 5 checks.

If it is important for you to be aware of a DOWN status of a host in max. 2
minutes, then make nagios check intervals base on seconds (instead of
minutes). Then make max_check_attemps to be 6 but totally taking 2 minutes
with a delay of 20 seconds each.

Sorry for my English.

Re: [Nagios-users] Images not showing in GUI

2007-03-24 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Then, there are two options left (I suppose).
1) You have sth wrong with your browser. It might refuse asking you username
and password. However, then, how are you available to see the web page? So,
only one option left :)
2) On the images which are not shown on the web page, right-click and
properties. Look at the image URL. I think there is sth wrong with it. It
should be http://-host-address-/nagios/images/.png
Is it so? Can you see any image with this URL on your own? (copy-paste the
image's address to your browser)

If so, it means you have given path values wrong when compiling nagios.
Anyway, check it then we can recompile it with right values.

Can you try

If again it is unsuccessful, let me be aware what happens when you type

2007-03-23 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

It might be using default .po file (translation - language). You can set
your default language to solve that English problem.
But there is a problem in here, you ought not to run nagios as root. There
can occur a security flaw.
Try to run only "check_users" as root or give related permission to the
nagios user.

Re: [Nagios-users] SMS notification with gammu

2007-03-23 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Hello Simon,
Probably, it is so. Otherwise, I don't have anything sensible in my mind
about this. Could you check (if possible pass to Nagios user and try to
execute)
/usr/bin/printf
/usr/local/bin/gammu
can be readable and executable by Nagios user?

you can simply add
# chmod +x /usr/bin/printf
# chmod +x /usr/local/bin/gammu

however, one more problem can occur. gammu also could be able to read its
resources as nagios user. Anyway, let's try to execute the command as Nagios
user. Waiting for your reply...

I did as you suggested and echoed the command into a temporary file
(output below), so the notification is been triggered. Again if I run the
output of the text file manually then the sms is sent as expected but not as
part of the notification command. Could it be due to permissions?

/usr/bin/printf "%b" "Svc:HTTP ++Host:Abs Self Service Server 2 ++ Addr:
89.50.35.113 ++ State:CRITICAL ++Date:23-03-2007 11:53:08" |
/usr/local/bin/gammu --sendsms TEXT 0000

Re: [Nagios-users] check_users plugin problem

2007-03-23 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Sorry, but that number difference is because:
- when root is logged in, you have used "su root", so there are two users:
1) root 2) (already open) me
- when "me" is logged in, there are only 1 user which is "me".

I hope it's clear enough.
So is this all problem? or is it only a sample?

Summary: To see which users are logged in, you can use command "w" as a
sample:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# w
12:56:24 up 11 days, 19:58, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
me pts/0127.0.0.1 12:560.00s 0.00s 0.00s w

as you see there is only one user that is "me". When I get to user root:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# su -
Password:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# w
12:56:24 up 11 days, 19:58, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
me pts/0127.0.0.1 12:560.00s 0.00s 0.00s
root pts/0127.0.0.1 12:580.00s 0.00s 0.00s w

there are two users online, which are both me. one of them is online user
beneath root user.

Hi,
Excuse for my bad English, I'm French.
I'm trying to check my local users on Debian Sarge Nagios 1.3 with the
plugin check_users.
But it only find one user each time.

Only root can make work properly the plugin :
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_users -w3 -c10
UTILISATEURS OK - 1 utilisateurs actuellement connectés sur
|users=1;3;10;0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ su -
Password:
serveur:~# /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_users -w3 -c10
USERS OK - 2 users currently logged in |users=2;3;10;0

It must be a permission problem, so I try to add nagios user to others
groups but it's not work.

Thanks
Sil

Re: [Nagios-users] Delay in notification

2007-03-21 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

If it is not concern of security, all please. Because, it is matter of
anything, subject of timeperiod to escalation, service definition to host
definition...
If it is so, you can change IP's and host names (but all in context, pay
attention to consistency please).

Re: [Nagios-users] host check delay problem

2007-03-21 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Hi,
I have stopped checks for hosts. And new configuration did well which made
me check each server (as a ping service for each) with 1 minute delays.
I have any other problem at the moment.

When my new configuration was set, I was having notification for even child
server's services. Then I decided to set service dependency for parent-child
hosts. However, at the moment, UNREACHABLE status became DOWN. Now
statistics show me availability falls even it was a dependent service.

How can I manage to solve this? Do you have any idea?

Re: [Nagios-users] SMS notification with gammu

2007-03-17 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Hi Simon,
Let Nagios to write the action into a file. This is because you should be
sure that Nagios runs the command exactly as yours. There can be some
exceptions (bugs, some missed escape chars, ...).
Thus, see the difference.

First of all, let it write into a file. For instance, change the command
like,
echo '/usr/bin/printf "%b" "Svc:$SERVICEDESC$ ++Host:$HOSTALIAS$ ++
Addr:$HOSTADDRESS$ ++ State:$SERVICESTATE$ ++Date:$SHORTDATETIME$" |
/usr/local/bin/gammu --sendsms TEXT $CONTACTPAGER$' >> /tmp/someTempFile

After you're sure a notification is done, open that temporary file and get a
random line (first, last or any) then try to execute it. Result? Same?

This makes difference. Waiting for your reply.

/usr/bin/curl -d "PNumber=$CONTACTPAGER$&PLine1=** $NOTIFICATIONTYPE$
alert - Host $HOSTALIAS$ is $HOSTSTATE$ **"
http://intranet.ccf.org/webftd/sendpage.asp

Only problem is just the way it looks:

**RECOVERYalert-HosthazenliisUP**

Seems to remove/truncate all the spacing. Any ideas?

What do you expect? You're doing something that the documentation
specifically says not to do because it leads to that behavior. I've been
telling you that your methodology is busted and wrong. You need to change it
if you want nagios to work right.

They will be if you follow my guidance or read the documentation.

Yes, re-read this entire thread. Read the documentation. Re-read Service
Check Scheduling. Re-read Determining Status and Reachability of Network
Hosts. Everything I've said so far is well documented. Reading the
documentation was the single best thing I did to understand how Nagios works
and you will be well served by doing the same. If you do this you'll see
that hosts are checked only when necessary and services are checked all the
time, on your schedule.

2007-03-15 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Hi,

The problem is that, there are some hosts down for two days, for instance,
all unplanned. That makes service checks stop.

Some servers are out for 4-5 minutes because of some sophisticated :)
construction issues which we are unable to be aware of. I just want them to
be checked as usual even they are down.

That's all my problem. Host checks are not done as I have configured to be
(1 min delay).

Do you know a way out of this?

Thanks,
Dincer

Yes, follow standard setup guidelines and minimize your usage of host
checks. Define all your hosts. Configure a host check that runs once and
exits quickly; check-host-alive with a single ping is usually sufficient.
Have it run a couple of times if you're paranoid (max_check_attempts). *Do
not set a check interval, don't even have it in the host definition.*
Configure the parents directive for your hosts if you want to take advantage
of the network outages logic to minimize notifications.

Define one or more services on the host. If the host is pingable only,
define a PING service for the host that pings it. Set a
normal_check_interval, retry_check_interval and check_period that is sane
for your environment.

Nagios will check the service in parallel and will only perform a
sequential host check when a service fails. Since services should rarely
fail, host checks will be run rarely. Since the host check will run and exit
quickly, there is minimal interruption of normal scheduling. If all your
hosts are pingable only and you don't care about configuring parents then
you don't need host checks at all and can set the check_period to none in
the host definitions to completely eliminate them.

Re: [Nagios-users] host check delay problem

2007-03-15 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

:)
By the way, sth just popped in mind. Let me explain this way:

I will have just one host which is the Nagios server, other hosts will be
deleted. Then, that host will be checked with active checks and of course
any moment it will be UP.
This host will have 300 services, actually which are "host_check_alive" for
our other hosts. So if some services are DOWN, host check will return UP and
only service notification escalation will be running. Nothing more.
Therefore, no hosts will be checked with 10 secs delay, eventhough I have
entered the check delay as 1 min.

Does it sound good? Have any ideas?

Thanks,
Dincer

Re: [Nagios-users] Notification scripting question

2007-03-15 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Hi,
I have two distinct suggestions out this problem.

First, you could define a bash/perl/c or any other language basis (embedded
perl or c is suggested for speed issues - if you have a less notification
frequency of 10 notifs in a minute) script. Then, certainly, you are passing
the mobile number as a parametre. So you could select a text inside that
script. At last that script will be the trigger for SMS. So notification
scipt will be your new bash (or other) script.

Second, you could define "n" (which is the number of different texts)
different SMS notification commands in (etc/misccommands in old versions,
and etc/command.etc in nagios 2.x). But you have to say that, this person
will be notified with this command for each.

I hope it is a bit picturable. If you have questions, I can be more clear on
this.

Hello,

I've just installed Nagios on a machine for the first time and have read
a little throught the docs and I'm now starting to get the hang of it.

From what I've read, for check_commands I can define a way to pass
arguments at runtime by using "command
parameter_1!parameter2!parameter_n" if I state $ARG1$...$ARGn$ in
the definition part.

Is there anything like that for the notification commands ?

What I'd like to do is send personalized notifications based on the
contact specified in my configuration.
I'm trying to call gammu/gnokii to send an SMS with different texts
depending on who's being notified and I'd like to avoid if possible the
definition of each and every particular notification command.

Is there any way to do this (something like specify in the notification
command just script-name "Custom Text" "mobile number" ) ?
Or do I have to create specific entries for each one of them ?

It's alpha. Alpha is never production quality for any software. You will
encounter bugs.

http://www.nagios.org/

"03/06/2007
Nagios 3.0a1 Released
The first official alpha release of Nagios 3 is now available! This is
development code, so I wouldn't recommend replacing your stable Nagios
2.xinstallation with it yet. Lots of improvements have been made since Nagios
2.x. Read What's New for more information. You can download the alpha
release here."

[Nagios-users] host check delay problem

2007-03-14 Thread Dinçer Kavraal

Hi guys,

I need a patch for Nagios not to stop all checks during a host check.
Does anybody have such a patch to share?
Thanks.

Let me tell you further, who are interested and have time:

I have set up Nagios to check only up/down state for about 300 hosts.
However, it could not finish checks in desired time period. Even, my
host check latency was about 400 secs!.

I have noticed host checks were unable to be done in parallel. So for
each host I have added a "HOST STATUS" service to check liveliness of host
with ping (using host_check_alive plugin). During this process, host check
latency and service check latency were fallen under 5 secs. Very nice.

But, It is impossible for me to say Nagios to check a host five times
with "1 minute delays" more to decide if a host is down. It checks host 5
times eventually with 10 seconds delay. Nothing to do with it.

Have any other advice for this situation?
Thanks again.
