Re: [Nagios-users] Service inherit contacts from host
Hi Justin, you are not the first person asking this :-) In short: For Nagios 2.x it is as you say and the only way is to use templates to ease the configuration. For Nagios 3 the contacts for the services are inherited from the host. > More service templates ease the coding a bit, > Depending on how strict the separation between the departments is consider splitting up your configuration in directories, one for each department. This can help to build a hierarchical configuration tree. hth, Ingo -- Ingo Lantschner Vienna/Austria Mob (+43-664) 143 84 18 - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. [Nagios-users] Discussion: Feeding Emails to Nagios
Hello, I designed a way to feed email from RAID-controllers (3ware) to Nagios but I am not sure how save the proposed solution is. First I added an alias to /etc/aliases: nagios: "|/usr/local/nagios/libexec/eventhandlers/handle-RAID-mail" Second I wrote the script nagios/libexec/eventhandlers/handle-RAID-mail Finally I had the problem, that postfixs "local", who delivers the email to handle-RAID-mail is chown nobody:nogroup which is far from being able to write into nagios/var/rw/nagcmd. So I did: $ sudo postconf -e default_privs=nagios Now "local" runs as user nagios and the checks are fed into Nagios BUT: Is there a more secure solution around w/o tampering the permissions of postfix? [Nagios-users] UNREACHABLE Hosts get not checked again
Hello, did someone experience this: One of the parent-hosts went down. Consequently and by definition his children got into state UNREACHABLE. After 30 Min. the parent was on line again. But some of its children stay UNREACHABLE, until I schedule a check manually, on each of them. The Nagiosserver (the whole OS) got rebooted several times in between. I found a directive "checks_enabled 1" in my hosts definition. This one is NOT documented in the official Nagios Doku - but the preflight check never complained. Is this a valid directive? (active_checks enabled is also set to 1) Nagios 2.5 on Ubuntu Server 5.06 The check-host-alive command is check_ping -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -w 5000,100% -c 5000,100% -p 1 Does someone have an idea? mike conigliaro schrieb: > however, im not sure if the backup exec wmi provider is going to allow me to > monitor what i need. has anyone been down this road before? Hi Mike, we did some monitoring of BE using WMI. We first did it by using NRPE calling a VB-Script which itself pulled the information out of WMI and - IIRC - some Textfiles. This approach did work, but was neither simple nor stable. One showstoper was, that WMI did not always work as expected. The scond was, that the NRPE-service on the Windowsbox tends to get overused and dies. Bottomline: We now integrate NSCA into our Nagios-system and try to receive and evaluate the SNMP-traps send by BE. hth, Ingo. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. [Nagios-users] How to use contactgroups from Host-Definitions for all services defined for this host
Hi all, is the below answer from Hendrik still state of the art? Or let it say the other way: Does anyone know, how to (re-)use the contactgroups-definition from a host for its services? So that all notificatiuons for this host get to the ones, defined in the contactgroup statement for this host (regardless if these are service- or hostnotifications). I would like to avoid defining the service many times just to fill in the same contactgroups I have alraedy defined for the host. TIA Ingo. The contactgroups in your hostgroup definition will be the target if you have a host alert but not on a service alert (so under Nagios <2.x) My suggestion: Read the docs about templates in your object configfiles, since Nagios 1.1 (I think) you can use them and they are realy usefull. IMHO the file http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/commandfile.html talks about "sticky bits" but it should call them SGID-bit. drwxrws--- is SGID and has the desired efect of setting the Groups Ownership on newly created files. drwxrwxrwt is the sticky-bit and allows only the owner of a file to modify it. I had a similar problem using 2.0 on Ubuntu Server, when using a compiled version of Nagios. I think the start-stop-scripts made by make install-init dont work on any plattform. I worked around this problem by taking a script from a debian-package and adapted it to my situation. HTH Ingo.

Seems as if the tempfile in my configuration is ok: $ strings -a /usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios |grep tempfile /usr/local/nagios/var/tempfile $ sudo su nagios $ whoami nagios $ if [ ! -w /usr/local/nagios/var ] ; then echo "I cannot write." ; fi $ touch /usr/local/nagios/var/xx But still no state-retentionfile: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/local/nagios/var$ ls *.dat comments.dat downtime.dat status.dat What can I have done wrong? TIA Ingo. P.S: Again my config: Nagios 2.2, Linux (Ubuntu Breezy Server)

BTW, is the retention file just a copy of the status file? Hi, I am using Nagios 2.0, now updated to 2.2 because I had problems as you described. The retentionfile gets newver written - even not if I restart the process. Unfoirtunatly the update did not solve the problem here. You can use templates in the servicedefinitions to set it on all Services by means of a single instance. see http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/templaterecursion.html hth, ingo
[Nagios-users] regex: supported multiplyers (f.e {2,124})
Hi all, the suport for regex in Nagios is really a great feature - thanks a lot for implementing it. I am wondering, which multiplyers are supported when refering to hostnames using regular expressions. F.e. [sw].*\.company\.net will match s033dc.company.net If I would like to be more specific I would write [sw][0-9]{3}[a-z]{2,124}\.company\.net This sould match any string starting with either s or w, followed by exactly 3 digits and a resonable number of characters plus the domain suffix. Seems as if Nagios does not understand this form. I could not find a clear documentation, which flavor of regex is supported. TIA, Ingo.
