Re: [Nagios-users] Can Cacti poll passively via Nagios client?
There are two ways I've used to accomplish this. The first method I used was having Cacti poll data then use a RRD check plugin to get the last data and alert if it triggered an alarm. The latest method I've used which needs some additional work is to use the Cacti plugin Thold to trigger a breach of a threshold. I think use Nagios to access the mySQL database and check the thold table if the alert is triggered or not (check_cacti_thold). Placing your database somewhere both systems can access will get you to where you want. The main reason I do this is because Cacti provides a much more "time" reliable polling mechanism unlike Nagios's scheduling. You could use Cacti to poll, as a part of each check you do, have it append to a file, a database, some type of persistent storage, and then have a another script that runs, either via cron or as a daemon, that pulls events from the persistent store and submits them to Nagios as passive checks using NSCA ... or have the checks themselves call send_nsca to submit the checks to Nagios over the wire ... I know that doesn't give you an all Cacti solution, but this is a Nagios group :). Have you thought about using distributed Nagios as another solution to this problem? Finally, if you make use of perfdata and use PNP or another graphing framework add-on to Nagios, you can pretty much replace Cacti altogether for graphing and reduce the double polling that happens when Cacti and Nagios are checking the same sets of devices ... - Max - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. [Nagios-users] Notification Macros to Determine How Long Last State Duration
Here is what I'm trying to figure out how to do. I'm pretty sure with the current Nagios variables available this is not possible (3.0). I have a perl script that is executed for notifications. On notifications that are triggered from state changes I would like to print out how long the service was in a previous state before this new state occurred. Example: A) State is OK for 10 minutes (10 checks of ok separated by 1 minute) B) State changes to CRITICAL C) Notification triggered LASTSERVICESTATECHANGE will be current time LASTSERVICEOK will be 1 minute ago LASTSERVICESTATE will be OK LASTSERVICESTATECRITICAL will be current time I'm thinking the problem is that LASTSERVICESTATECHANGE should be 10 minutes since LASTSERVICESTATE is OK. Bug or misinterpretation of macro? Thoughts? Suggestions? I'm struggling with this in many environments. I'm getting too many false positives (when it's just network related) and the host is not actually down. (I've just gotta limp this along until we fix our point to point solution between several of these sites.) - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. Re: [Nagios-users] Notification Woes
Just an FYI on what I did to get what I wanted to work: Service created with a check_interval of 60 and retry_interval of 10 and max_check_attempts of 1. Event handler that is passed a value of 60 and 10. Service escalation for first notification with a notification_interval of 10 (60 in service as it throws warnings otherwise because of the default check_interval). Service escalation for second notification with a notification_interval of 0. Event handler setup to CHANGE_NORMAL_SVC_CHECK_INTERVAL to 60 on OK and 10 on non-OK. If non-OK also SCHEDULE_SVC_CHECK in 10 minutes. So if a passive or active check comes in and changes state from OK to CRITICAL an alert is sent to first person, a check is scheduled in 10 minutes, and if still down on second check sends an email to second person. I also created a flapping only contact to be added to service contact_group so flapping is reported to second person as well. > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:nagios-users- > [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Larry Low > Sent: Friday, February 15, 2008 12:27 PM > To: 'Nagios Users Mailinglist' > Subject: Re: [Nagios-users] Notification Woes > > > -Original Message- > > From: Thomas Guyot-Sionnest [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > > Sent: Friday, February 15, 2008 2:42 AM > > To: Larry Low > > Cc: 'Nagios Users Mailinglist' > > Subject: Re: [Nagios-users] Notification Woes > > > > -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- > > Hash: SHA1 > > > > On 14/02/08 03:21 PM, Larry Low wrote: > > > Service X actively checked every 60 minutes. > > > Service X passively monitored through SNMP Traps. > > > > > > Service X receives CRITICAL passively. Re: [Nagios-users] mail notifications
If /var/log/maillog shows the message being sent to all three recipients I would suggest try sending a test message from the server itself. 'echo test | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]' It's possible you need to modify your notification command or your servers smtp server to make sure the from address is proper and the forward/reverse DNS of the server is proper. [Nagios-users] Notification Woes
Service X actively checked every 60 minutes. Service X passively monitored through SNMP Traps. Service X receives CRITICAL passively. E-mail to contact A. Modify Service X to actively poll every 5 minutes till recovery. Email B after 3rd CRITICAL (10-15 minute delay). I can't use retry_interval because I want contact A to be notified all the time and retry_interval is only used on SOFT states. I was thinking of executing a change in polling interval with an event handler. Any insight? I'm also curious on how flap alerts are handled under serviceescalation. Here is a simple authNoPriv setup. The snmp-server user will not show up on the config but is stored in a private config in flash. 'show snmp user' can be used to get info. snmp-server group v3 auth access snmp-server user v3 auth md5 You will probably want to do more to lock down access as RW is available with those commands. Careful with this as it has crashed a few 12.3 routers I've used (3 out of 700). Host A is detected down. I perform simple ICMP checks for this. Checking services for this host is pointless as they are going to fail. I would simply like active service checks to be halted until the host recovers. The host recovery is handled by the host checks which will run every retry interval. There is no need to check services to detect recovery. To prevent any possible problems with the host not being detected on its recovery I will simply reschedule checks for all services in 5 minutes from the recovery. > > -- > Marc > > --- > -- > This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft > Defy all challenges. Anyone have any ideas how to tackle this problem? Most of my active checks are run very rarely (60 minutes) so if one is checked while the host is down it takes longer than I would like to see a recovery. I currently use ePN for all my active checks (though most are only every 60 minutes since I rely on passive means). The only thing I run outside of ePN is my notification script as I haven't had the urge or need to rewrite it to load under the ePN. I don't use the Nagios::Plugin CPAN module though, just the utils.pm. I have seen many reports of memory leaks but I've yet to see any on this or any earlier deployment. [Nagios-users] Disable/Enable Service Checks based on Host State
I want Nagios to refrain from performing active service checks while a host is down and re-enable them on its recovery. [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED] Dear Folks, I am writing to invite testing of a small patch for the embedded Perl Nagios feature. Currently (2.10/3.x) ePN, when a plugin is modified (without a restart) refuses to run the modified plugin because compilation of the modified plugin fails when Perl attempts to redefine the modified plugins subroutines in the package corresponding to the modified plugin. The only work around is to restart Nagios. The patch deletes the Perl package (and therefore all the subroutines it contains) before the modified plugin is recompiled (the plugin and the package are therefore compiled into a nonexistent namespace). I would prefer to only send the patch to people who are 1 familiar with the ePN tradeoffs (the memory leak) 2 convinced that the ePN tradeoffs are outweighed by the benefits 3 have some experience with the memory footprint of the ePN Nagios and 4 those who do not object to testing a potentially unstable release of Nagios I have been using the patch for my production system (195 hosts, 356 service checks) with out any problem that is obvious to me (custom Perl plugins for SNMP checks of routers, spanning tree etc). I am particuarly keen on knowing whether the memory leak is worse. Please let me know privately if you are interested. Yours sincerely. Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios 3.0b5 - ePN and perl caching [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
I had been compiling without perl cache so that would explain why $delete was being set to 1. The problem must be in getting rid of the old cached script. I am digging deeper. Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios 3.0b5 - ePN and perl caching [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
This is without making changes to the script. Scenario: 1) ./configure --prefix=/opt/Nagios --enable-event-broker --with-embedded-perl (I have tried --without-perlcache as well and have not had time to sift through code to see if this is the actual problem) 2) Have an ePN script with sub print_help 3) Execute 1st check of ePN script, returns OK, no problem 4) Execute 2nd check of ePN script and ePN compile reports print_help function is redeclared If I compile without embedded-perl the problem does not exist. I should probably post this to the devel list. Do you mean that, after you change a plugin that Nagios is running, ePN fails to compile the modified plugin with this (spurious) error code ? If so, I am running 2.9 and have this problem. Reluctantly I have found that the only way to deal with this is restart Nagios after a plugin mod. It is a PITA. Patches welcome. The > > > Larry Low - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. [Nagios-users] Nagios 3.0b5 - ePN and perl caching
The problem I am having is with subroutines inside of perl scripts ran under the ePN. If a subroutine is defined the next time the script or similar script is executed the ePN compile fails with a duplicate subroutine reported as the problem. I believe this problem does not exist under the 2.x code.
