Re: [Nagios-users] monitor bsd by snmp

2007-01-30 Thread Mike Holloway

I use check_snmp_load with FreeBSD (5.3,6.1,6.2), works great. Of
course you do need to install net-snmp onto the server:

Re: [Nagios-users] popen timeout received, but no child process

2007-01-02 Thread Mike Holloway

You might try compiling check_ping --without-ipv6, that solved a
different problem for me that I was experiencing with check_ping.
Also have a read of this thread:

https://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=14887381

it had to do with the ipv6 host check, where it
would check whether or not the host is an IPv6 address, by calling a
getaddrinfo(), and that would take long enough that SIGALRM would be
tripped, and child_process was NULL at that point.

In checkcommands.cfg, try wrapping ARG3 in single quotes on the

 [Nagios-users] Using $ in password

 Dear All,

 I have a simple question. What should I do to include the
 character $ as
 one
 of the password characters in the check command?

 Here are some required information:

 1- OS FC 5

 2- kernel 2.6.18-1

 3- Nagios version 2.5

 4- The command definition

 # 'check_httpp' command definition
 define command{
 command_namecheck_httpp
 command_line$USER1$/check_http -p $ARG1$ -I $ARG2$ -t
 120 -a
 $ARG3$
 }
 5- The service configuration

 define service{
 use generic-service
 host_name
 service_description YYY
 contact_groups  ZZZ
 check_command check_httpp!61002!192.168.1.4!:33$77
 }
 When I execute the command manually it works.

 Any help will be much appreciated

Re: [Nagios-users] big performance issue with Nagios 2.5

2006-12-11 Thread Mike Holloway
In nagios.cfg, what values are you using for service_reaper_frequency
and sleep_time?  I'm using service_reaper_frequency=5 and
sleep_time=1 for about 10 hosts and 200 services. You might need to
adjust your service_reaper_frequency down from the default with as
many services as you are checking.

 - active host checks are off
 - host check is replaced by a dummy shell script which just says ok
 - approx. 15 services are critical, another 15 warning.

 So, whats the issue? When i came back into the office this morning
 i found
 nagios having a service check latency of about 350 sec (maximum and
 also
 average). I've had this last week to, and its fixed by simply
 restarting
 the nagios daemon.

 I've set up some performance monitoring of nagios and the general
 linux
 system, and this is what i see:

 - The load goes up to 2-2.5 within 12h of nagios running (not the
 peaks,
 but the 15 minute average)
 - nagios runs fine for about 15-18 hours (not general numbers, but
 what
 happened this weekend)
 - no unusual notifications over the whole weekend

 Any ideas where to look?

nagios.cmd is a named-pipe created by nagios at runtime. Make sure
permissions on the directory specified in nagios.cfg's command_file=

Subject: [Nagios-users] retention issue

I’m using nagios-2.04b.

Here’s what happened. We had nagios running using nagios-1.2. We
wanted to try out nagios-2.04b. I set up an entire new nagios
instance on the same machine. We called this nagios instance,
nagios-2. I’ve moved nagios-2 to be in the same location as nagios
(-1), the webserver etc. Everything is running, I can access the
cgis, etc. All values have been updated to reflect the move.

But somewhere along the line retention got extremely screwy. Here
were my values:

retain_state_information=1

state_retention_file=keeping path private/nagios-2.04/var/
retention.dat

retention_update_interval=60

use_retained_program_state=1

I had moved nagios-2 to be nagios on 1/11. Anytime I restart (/etc/
init.d/nagios restart), the state values return to the values on
the 11, with last check times set to 1/11.

I have updated the retention_update_interval to 2. The
retention.dat file is not updating while nagios is running. It is
also not updated when nagios shuts down, seen by both the code in
the init script and the modification time of the retention file,
even though the comments say it will:

So I decided to then remove the retention.dat file. This worked
great as the status no longer says 1/11 for the last check. Except
that no data is being retained. So anytime I do a restart, all
statuses go back to pending.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

[Nagios-users] retention.dat not created

2006-01-10 Thread Mike Holloway

Howdy fellow Nagios users. I've been researching a Nagios issue I've
been experience, and as I haven't yet been able to resolve it with
help from the nagios forums, I thought I would try the mailing list.

My system: FreeBSD 6.0 / Nagios 2.0b6 and 2.0rc1

The problem: I've been unable to get retention.dat working as
described in the documentation. The file is never created. It
doesn't appear to be a file/dir permissions problem (running as
nagios/nagios). It's not a multiple Nagios processes problem. The
file never gets created or populated with data. I've tried values of
0, 3, and 60 for retention_update_interval, and have restarted Nagios
(killed all procs) and given it plenty of time to populate
retention.dat, I never see the file created.

My need is to have Nagios remember disabled service checks and
disabled notifications when it is restarted.

Below are the relevant parts of my config (please assume a host entry
exists):

retain_state_information=1
state_retention_file=/var/spool/nagios/retention.dat

register 0
}

define service{
use generic-service
