Re: [Nagios-users] Monitoring Windows servers
On Mon, 22 May 2006, Oliver Marshall wrote: I have spent the last week looking for a monitoring solution. I have been assessing Nagios, Zabbix, and Servers Alive for Windows. Servers Alive may seem perfect, though its clearly more expensive than the rest. I think it may have an issue monitoring clients servers on other domains etc as it lacks some form of remote authentication. Zabbix I will admit is my preference as it's all web based. It's windows agent means that I can get local info and, more importantly, run a script on the client server and get the results. However, the documentation is truly terrible and the Windows side is even worse. The last thing I need is someone to cock-up a monitoring setup and then never get informed of any issues. Nagios is clearly the daddy when it comes to network monitoring, though it does require a level of linux knowledge that we just don't have here (ssh access to setup the config for starters). I know that there is a web based tool for setting up the monitoring config (Nagat or something) but that's now not being supported or added to, and it's policy to not use out-of-support products. I know there is also a 3rd party Windows Agent that can run on the servers and monitor local events, though it doesn't have scripting support, and it's not part of the main build, and hasn't been updated for sometime. Does anyone have anything useful I should consider when looking at Nagios ? Any other web based config tools that can be used? Any other windows agents etc ? Any comments on my opinions so far ? When looking at Nagios and specially the plugins world, there are a couple place to look. There is the main nagios-plugins distribution which covers a core set of functionality and there are a host of additional plugins that have been contributed and are available via nagios-exchange. Both have active support on the mailing lists. For Windows - you have a couple of choices: NSClient/NSClient++/NC_Net and NRPE_NT. NRPE_NT allows you to write Windows scripts and extend the pluging capability. A number for wmi scripts are hosted on nagios-exchange. -- -sg --- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Is this supported by any version of Nagios? Nagios timeperiods only considers day of week and hours in timeperiods. I have 3 additional dependency plugins which do various other checks such as ram and disk usage. When the main database plugin check goes to warning or critical I want to suppress email notifications on the 3 remaining checks as there is no point in running these (they won't return anything useful apart from timeouts). However, this rarely happens. Usually, I get the main check email notification plus 1 other email notification from one of the dependencies (though it may not always be the same dependency) Is there something i'm missing here ? Why can't it supress all three as i would expect ? Do i need to set a parameter setting somewhere ? My main plugin checks every 5 mins with the dependencies every 20 mins. You are not using the right tool. If you want performance graphs like that you need to poll the proper interfaces and store them with your own rrdtool script and generate the graphs. Nagios is not the tool for concatenating these things. Only use a hammer when you need one. If you need a plier it is not good to grasp the nearest hammer and expect it to be a plier. (you may interchange plier and hammer if you like in this sample as long as you do it consistently ;-) No, for this, Nagios is perfect. I need one graph. Not one per port. Nagios is really quite perfect for monitoring single things. There is a single SNMP command that will give me this. snmpstatus. It does the aggregation for you. Read the man page, it's really quite handy. All I wanted to know is if someone had a plugin for it, or knew of a plugin that did this. Again, I need Nagios to monitor the results of an existing SNMP command. Seems that's Nagios' sweet spot. I've got Nagios and nagiosgraph .7 working quite well now with RRD, generating graphs of desired services quite happily. As you note from the man page for snmpstatus - it does a lot of things - Question is are they useful? You mentioned total traffic - snmpstatus adds up all the available counters - What happens when the counters roll over? The counters only count from when the snmp agent was (re)started. On cisco and other network devices you can clear counters at any time - snmpstatus would not know the difference. Is an absolute number that is always increasing (in a saw tooth pattern) meaningful? Much more useful would be aggregation of data rates/bandwidth used across all interfaces - For this you will need an mrtg/cacti/cricket based solution that can poll data on individual interfaces and then summarize them. - Like Cricket's summary graphs where you add up values from other entries. These can then be checked via check_rrd for threshold values. If you need to see the operational status of all the interfaces - then check_ifstatus will do. -- -sg --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. Do you grep through log files for problems? You don't need a miblist if you are providing a numeric OID. A normal miblist is a colon separated list of directories containing mib files. It is used by the snmpget utility to translate to a numeric OID. e.g. system.sysDescr.0 == .1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0 Also please post the result of the following: snmpget -v 1 -c public 10.30.129.30 .1.3.6.1.4.1.2012.1.1.1.4.2.0 If you see data other than SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.2012.1.1.1.4.2.0 = INTEGER: 69 then you may have some local mib files that don't have the correct syntax. I am running the following command on the command line on the nagios box: /usr/local/nagios/libexec/./check_snmp ip address of temp probe in our lab) -o .1.3.6.1.4.1.2012.1.1.1.4.2.0 -C public and get a value of SNMP WARNING - 68 back however i dont think that this value is correct and as a reult the check_snmp plugin seems to be obtaining the wrong result as i dont expect this to be a warning. For example if i run: Well, you haven't told check_snmp if that's OK or CRITICAL so it doesn't know what to report it as, hence WARNING. Remember the OIDs can contain just about any kind of data and check_snmp has no idea what it is you're querying, it just has an SNMP 'address'. You have to add in the status intelligence. ./check_snmp 10.30.129.30 -o .1.3.6.1.4.1.2012.1.1.1.4.2.0 -C public -wv 80 -cv 85 i still get a value of WARNING - 68 I'm not sure what version of check_snmp you're using but -wv and -cv aren't valid command line args, at least with 1.4 and prior. is there a different check_snmp plugin i could use? or am i just running the command wrong? I dont want the service to show up as a warning when the temperature is 68F...hence the reason for doing -wv 80 -cv 85 You just need to tell check_snmp what to expect for each range. Check_snmp (and a couple other plugins) behave differently than other plugins WRT warning and critical detection as the results of the SNMP query are highly variable. Here are a couple of examples -- To test for a very specific value where anything but that value is bad you might use something like - define command{ command_namecheck_bgp_peer_state command_line$USER1$/check_snmp -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -o .1.3.6.1.2.1.15.3.1.2.$ARG1$ -s 6 -C $USER3$ -l 'BGP Peer $ARG1$ State' } The above will be OK if the value of that OID is 6 and CRITICAL if it's anything else. To check for a range of values you might use the following - define command
