Re: [Nagios-users] Using Nagios to restart a Power Strip, Switch, Router, etc. via SNMP

2007-02-21 Thread Trevor Warren

Ofcourse it iswhile the consequence sound a little scary too. Think
about it.ur intention is to have nagios trigger an request if a
condition is met.

The intention can be satisfied over SNMP
With the trigger being called when a plugin check is performed

Nagios per say may not be equipped with the capability to perform a whole
lot of business process checks towards concluding whether the applications
really down. It will be able to ping for resources using standard/custom
plugins and verify the availability/lack of it using its existing framework.

Hence...while you due to lack of accessibility to a switch for some reason
your plugin may decide based on your coded business rules that its
unreachable and send an snmp request to reset the device. In turn what you
have actually done is...during a moment of large n/w traffic not been able
to reach the switch and as a result sent a request to reset the switch which
i would recieve and probable reset it once the instantaenous peak is done
with.

Am unsure if i have been able to relate to you in the right manner. But
since nagios doesnt have a rule engine it might be best to let nagios do
what it does best and have it integrate with a rule engine which takes care
of all of your other misc requests over snmp.

Hope this helped.

Thanks and Regards
Trevor

Hello,

I've been scouring Google all day long and I can't seem to find anything
regarding Nagios being able to reboot switches, routers, or power strips via
SNMP. We have some HP Procurve Switches, Some Cisco 7200 Routers, and some
APC Power strips, all being monitored via SNMP already and via Nagios, but
it would be great if we could reboot these devices (or sections of the power
strip by outlet) using SNMP write permissions.

Is this possible?

Re: [Nagios-users] Scheduling queue falling behind.

2007-02-15 Thread Trevor Warren

Hey folks this is Trevor here,

While i used to have a lot of nagios deployments for clients i did have
these issues more than one. I had about 25-30 servers and all the checks on
these servers would be way behind the actual scheduled time. It would wary
from a few mins to hours at length.

Never got around to solving the prob. Thought i had a bad config but i
too had the same settings like Robert here. Was baffled as to why was nagios
delaying the checks. The box wasnt topping out and the network wasnt an
issue either. I have found such issues when running nagios with a huge
number of metrics being monitored. 400-500 in total.

Am not sure if this helps..but this is precisely what i too went through.

Thanks and Regards
Trevor

Are you reporting these checks passively to another server?

2006-08-28 Thread Trevor Warren
Hello Mike,

You indeed have an interesting project here. Was trying to find
documentation towards understanding how it works but couldnt make any
progress. Am guessing..,

You configure a service on the nagios box to call the nagiosnt
plugin over nrpe which can then call any other windows machine using
wmi. Is this how it works???.

  Thanks and Regards Mike.

Re: [Nagios-users] NRPE in AIX5L...?

2006-07-13 Thread Trevor Warren
Have tired many a time to get nrpe running on aix but never have had a
smooth experience.  Aix n HpUX have always been issues to get up
and running on.

We ended up writing our own plugins on the older *nix boxes. But now
even those are outdated and have be to redone for AIX5L. Some of us
needs(probably i will sometime soon) to take ownership on the aix
front. This is the only way we will ever get stable plugins for
aix/hpux/solaris.

Is there a plugin roadmap on the risc front?.
