Re: [Nagios-users] Nagios installation issue
Start again and follow http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/quickstart-ubuntu.html Change the version numbers to whatever version you are installing obviously as to whats wrote in that guide as its quite old. Also you need to install "apt-get libssl-dev" before you install the plugins or the 1.4.16 plugins will fail to install properly Job done. -Original Message- From: Nivin Abraham [mailto:thisisni...@gmail.com] Sent: 17 September 2013 09:15 To: nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [Nagios-users] Nagios installation issue my ubuntu version is 12.04 nagios version is nagios-4.0.0beta4 nagios plugin version is nagios-plugins-1.4.16 i have installed my host os is windows 7 vm used is oracle virtualbox i followed the installation from youtube video Nagios sous Ubuntu 12.04 ~ Mohamed AKRICH i followed the entire installation but changed the versions as mentioned above everything got installed without any issues but when i type "service nagios start" and this is what i get /etc/init.d/nagios: 20 .:Can't open /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions so pls help me and i am a newbie to linux as well as ubuntu -- LIMITED TIME SALE - Full Year of Microsoft Training For Just $49.99! 1,500+ hours of tutorials including VisualStudio 2012, Windows 8, SharePoint 2013, SQL 2012, MVC 4, more. I have loaded a test VM with Nagios 3.4.1 on, on Ubuntu 12.04 desktop to test on rather than play with SSL on the live box. I have followed this guide: http://blog.stefandanielschwarz.de/2010/02/howto-securing-nagios.html But I cant get it to work... When I browse https://localhost/nagios firefox returns: Secure Connection Failed An Error occurred during a connection to localhost SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) For the cert setup I entered localhost for the Common Name. On the live box though I will enter the FQDN that I will hit over the internet abc.def.com for example Anybody give me any pointers on how to sort this out on the test box please? [Nagios-users] Nagios Report Info - UP Reasons - Confused
Hi all, Could somebody please explain the Nagios report outputs to me? It's the UP time one that I don't understand: For eg - taken from 1 of my servers this week State Type / Reason Time % Total Time % Known Time UP Unscheduled 6d 22h 0m 4s 100.000% 100.000% Scheduled 0d 1h 59m 56s 1.190% 1.190% Total 7d 0h 0m 0s 100.000% 100.000% What is "Unscheduled" uptime? Surely the 6d 22h.. is scheduled uptime??? Its Up and Nagios knows its up? And on the flip side of it, what is the 1h 59m etc that is classed as "scheduled" uptime? Probably being really stupid here! That's correct. I've dealt with this situation before, and I've ended up implementing two mostly standalone Nagios systems. They each check their own site, so if their external network goes away they are still able to monitor and alert for the things they're responsible for (you have to use out-of-band notifications of course). They also each check each other's *site*, ala the other site's firewall, so the Nagios server at site A can alert and let you know if site B goes away, but it *doesn't* try to alert you for all of the hosts and services at site B. -- "The problem with quotes on the internet is that it's very hard to verify their authenticity." -- Abraham Lincoln -- Live Security Virtual Conference Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond. Re: [Nagios-users] 2 Nagios boxes running together in different locations
Interesting - How does it work though - I mean if the firewall plays up at Site A, it thinks everything in Site B is down - so Nagios GUI marks everything as down - what happens then if say a server in Site B does actually go down - we will not get alerted to that? I made a slight error in my original description - when the firewall "goes down" it cant contact anything at both locations, not just Site A, due to the fact that the protected interface stays up but just denies all traffic. Re: [Nagios-users] sms notifications
Hi Marco I use a Nokia 6021 mobile phone hooked up via USB using the gammu software, and I write all my sms alerts to a MYSQL database, an sms daemon then scans the database and sends out any that are in the outbox table through the connected mobile phone. I have tested this with 243 sms alerts all going out at the same time (killed a VPN link) and it worked flawlessly (although did take approx. 15 minutes to send all alerts) Hope this is helpful From: Frank Bulk [mailto:frnk...@iname.com] Sent: 02 February 2012 02:55 To: NAGIOS Subject: Re: [Nagios-users] sms notifications We use the MultiTech MultiModem iSMS - works great. We would like notifications for host and service problems for all servers to be sent to the IT team. In addition, we would like host and service problems for servers in Group A to go to the group A manager, host and service problems for Group B to go to the group B manager, and so on. We tend to manage host notification via host groups, and service notifications via service groups. We really want to manage service notifications on a host group basis, so if Apache fails on a group A machine, we notify the IT team and the Group A manager. I'm looking for ideas for implementing that in a manageable and scalable way. If I've not described the problem clearly enough, I apologise: please ask questions for clarity. [Nagios-users] New to Nagios - Why do i not recieve Service Alert notifications?
Good afternoon, I am completely new to Nagios so please excuse me if this is a really silly question: I am currently testing before i start to add in real hosts. I am testing notifications at the moment and i have created a file for SWITCHES that i have put in a test switch that does not exist so always will be down and should trigger notification. I recieve Host Alert Emails in the output of Subject: ** PROBLEM Host Alert: Test Switch is DOWN ** * Nagios * Notification Type: PROBLEM Info: CRITICAL - Host Unreachable (192.168.1.208) Host: Test Switch Address: 192.168.1.208 State: DOWN Date/Time: Wed Nov 30 16:47:07 GMT 2011 But i never recieve a Service Alert email. I have tried disabling nofitications in the host template and only enabling notifications in the service template but then i recieve nothing at all. Here the whole of my switch.cfg that i am using for testing, Nagios likes it and reports Down and Critical statuses on it so it works but just doesnt send out service alert notifications. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/895609/Switch.cfg Could somebody help me as to why please? Re: [Nagios-users] Make a Host Group not visible on web interface?
If you add "register0" to your hostgroup definition it won't show up on the web interface, but you can still assign services to it as per normal. Very useful technique. Cheers, Erik Larkin - Original Message From: Mark A. Lappin To: Nagios Users List Sent: Wed, December 15, 2010 9:49:04 AM Subject: [Nagios-users] Make a Host Group not visible on web interface? Good Morning All - Is there anyway to define a host group, assign hosts to that host group but not have the membership or the host group show up on under "Host Groups" on the web interface? I have several things which run like services and several that don't, for the purposes of defining service checks, I would much rather set the services up to look at host groups instead of hosts but I'm ending up with so many host groups that the host groups become almost meaningless in the web interface. Example - I'm watching about 65 printers with Nagios. Different makes, different models. Each printer has any number of physical trays but monitoring them, they are all a bit different. One of the things I need to monitor is paper tray status. Some printers count manual feed tray as tray 1, some as tray 2, some as tray 3. Some have a tray 2 and tray 3 but not tray 1. So on my service checks, I'm applying this to all my network printers and then on the different tray checks, exclude certain printers. A little difficult to keep track of. I would like to put the printers in some host groups such as Tray1, Tray2, Tray3, etc, set services to check those host groups rather than keep excluding hosts on the services. But host groups Tray1, Tray2, Tray3 are meaningless via the web interface so I would like them not to show. Nagios Core - 3.2.3 ML Mark A. If I use individual members it works and they appear in the nagios display. Looks like it doesn't work at any rate. Re: [Nagios-users] Wildcards in hostgroup definitions
Thanks for checking it out, Duncan. Here are the config snippets to illustrate the mystery: define hostgroup { hostgroup_name ecomUs alias ecom servers - US members .* } - This works. We get an ecomUs hostgroup with all our hosts. define hostgroup { hostgroup_name ecomUs aliasecom servers - US hostgroup_members .* } - This doesn't work. Re: [Nagios-users] check_asterisk plugin returning null
Bit of a shot in the dark here, but I notice that in your examples from the command line, you use -U, -w and -c. But the Nagios service you define also adds in a -P option (port, I'm guessing). If you haven't already tried manually running from the command line with the -P option, it would be worth a shot. Hi Specs: Nagios 3.0.3 CentOS release 5.2 (Final) I'm trying to configure a 'vacation' timeperiod so I will not receive alerts using calendar dates, but once the dates are accepted into nagios, they seem to go skewiff. My config looks like this; define timeperiod{ timeperiod_name kristian_vacation alias Times Kristian is not in the office. 2009-01-17 - 2009-02-10 00:00-24:00 } >From the web interface, it changes into this; kristian_vacation Times Kristian is not in the office.2009--1-17 - 2009-00-10 00:00:00 - 24:00:00 as you can see, the calendar dates change from 2009-01-17 - 2009-02-10 to 2009--1-17 - 2009-00-10 Is anybody else seeing the same thing or am I doing something obviously wrong? [Nagios-users] Notification Timing Problem
Hello, I seem to be having a rather difficult time getting notifications to work the way that I would like. I'm using a test host to have Nagios generate alerts when I take it offline. Nagios detects and sends notifications for the host coming back on-line very quickly. What I'm doing in order to test my config is to then simulate that the host fails again in a few minutes. The problem I'm seeing is that it takes Nagios 15-20 minutes to send a notification that the host is again down. This would be useless to me in a production environment; if the host drops again -- I need to know about it immediately. OK, I've been through the docs and have checked everything that seems to make sense in order to figure out this issue -- with no success. I'm running Nagios 3.0.2. Please see some output I've included below to see the time lag between when Nagios notices the host is down again and when it sends the notification. [Nagios-users] intermittent CGI failure
Installed 3.0.3 from source on OpenBSD 4.3 (sparc64). Everything works, but every so often the CGI's will fail. e.g. If I refresh, say, status.cgi?host=all 10 times in a row, it'll fail at least once or twice. I can reproduce using both Apache and nginx. Here's Apache error log snippet: "Premature end of script headers: /var/www/nagios/cgi-bin/status.cgi" Here's nginx error log snippet: "upstream closed prematurely FastCGI stdout while reading response header from upstream" Familiar issue to anyone? Next steps to debug? I cannot reproduce by running, manually from command shell: export REQUEST_METHOD=GET ./status.cgi - This SF.Net email is sponsored by the Moblin Your Move Developer's challenge Build the coolest Linux based applications with Moblin SDK & win great prizes Grand prize is a trip for two to an Open Source event anywhere in the world http://moblin-contest.org/redirect.php?banner_id=100&url=/ ___ Nagios-users mailing list Nagios-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/nagios-users ::: Please include Nagios version, plugin version (-v) and OS when reporting any issue. ::: Messages without supporting info will risk being sent to /dev/null

Pili, Thanks for your response. Email is working correctly since the host notices are going out. I'm aware that the notifications won't go out if the server is down, but the server is up as we setup a dummy service. Re: [Nagios-users] notifications for downed services
Well, here's what I have in its entirety. My services.cfg looks like this: Generic services template define service{ name generic-service; active_checks_enabled 1; obsess_over_service 1; check_freshness 0; notifications_enabled 1; event_handler_enabled 1; flap_detection_enabled 1; retain_status_information 1; retain_nonstatus_information 1; register 0; } define service{ use generic-service namebasic-service is_volatile 0 check_period24x7 max_check_attempts 15 normal_check_interval 5 retry_check_interval1 notification_interval 20 notification_period 24x7 register0 } define service{ use basic-service name dns-service check_command check_dns max_check_attempts 10 check_period 24x7 notification_interval 20 notification_period 24x7 notification_options c,r contact_groups localadmin register 0 } HOST01 ## define service{ use dns-service host_name host01 servicegroups mygroup service_description DNS contact_groups localadmin } So, to me, that looks correct. Host01's service check should inherit everything through 'use dns-service' line. checkcommands.cfg file for DNS: # 'check_dns' command definition define command{ command_namecheck_dns command_line$USER1$/check_dns -H $HOSTADDRESS$ } contactgroups.cfg: define contactgroup{ contactgroup_name localadmin alias Site Administrator members nagios } contacts.cfg: define contact{ contact_name nagios alias admin host_notification_period 24x7 service_notification_period 24x7 service_notification_options w,u,c,r,f host_notification_options d,u,r,f service_notification_commands notify-by-email host_notification_commands host-notify-by-email email [EMAIL PROTECTED] } I believe the above should be correct since I have host and service to be notified by email. Obviously I'm overlooking something. Marc, if you meant something else by setting up the contact_group for services, please let me know. [Nagios-users] service notifications not being sent
Hello everyone, I have just configured some service checks for services such as http, smtp, etc.. The commands are defined in the commands.cfg file and then called in the services.cfg file. [Nagios-users] Lots of Alerts
Hello We have defined one service in services.cfg, which contain about 30 hosts. some times we are receiving alerts from all of those services, however I think only one of the services was not responsive. ( practically we are receiving false alerts ). define service{ use generic-service ; Name of service template to use host_name30_host_names_separated_by_comma also our Nagios is configured to monitor in smart way and not every 5 or 10 minutes, service_inter_check_delay_method=s but normal_check_interval 15 retry_check_interval1 so I was wondering if Nagios will monitor all 30 services at once, or still it can manage to check those services one by one and in smart way. Re: [Nagios-users] Perfdata-file is gone after running nagiosgraph
thanks for the patch url. I just found that our Nagios is built with embeded perl option, and I have to mention the path to perl before each plugin. that was the reason perfformance cammand was not executed through nagios.cfg. however still I had some weired problems with nagiosgraph. 1-I don't know why when I reload nagios, it removes /tmp/service-perfdata file. 2- I have added /usr/bin/perl before plugin command and it works on our dev servers, but in our production server, nothing is written to /tmp/service-perfdata. Re: [Nagios-users] Perfdata-file is gone after running nagiosgraph
Hello Patrick I had the same problem, because insert.pl rename the perfdata file, but does not create a new one, you can add a line to insert.pl to create a new file, so another file will be created after processing old data, however for now, because I am debugging nagios and nagiosgraph , I just removed those lines in insert.pl so I can test perfdata output. I have one question for you, I set up Nagios.cfg the same as your config, but Nagios is not running the service_performance_data_file, are you having the same problem? or it is just me. finally I put insert.pl in crontab, because Nagios was not running it at all, so rrd files was not created. I am using check_snmp and unfortunately it seems there is no argument to pass perfdata. Nagiosgraph is using regular expresion to either use output section or perfdata section of perfdata file.
