Re: [Nagios-users] Need help

2007-09-12 Thread nemir nemiria
Been using nagios since 1.0, and I think the methodology has shifted a
little, but I am still old skool.

I finally got Nagios working and into the web panel.

Excellent!  :-)

Now, how on earth do I ADD new services to monitor???

In your nagios implementation there should be a series of config files
underneath the etc directory.

In there will be something called nagios.cfg.

There will be a bunch of config files specified thus:

cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/contactgroups.cfg
cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/contacts.cfg
cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/dependencies.cfg
cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/escalations.cfg
cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/hostgroups.cfg
cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/hosts.cfg
cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/services.cfg
cfg_file=/usr/local/nagios/etc/timeperiods.cfg

These files are what you use to configure nagios.

In the hosts file you can specify a host like this:

# 'SydInt01' host definition
define host{
   use generic-host; Name of host
template to use

   host_name   SydInt01
   alias   SydB2
   address 172.30.20.244
   check_command   check-host-alive
   max_check_attempts  10
   notification_interval   480
   notification_period 24x7
   notification_optionsd,u,r
   contact_groups  npsadmins

Once the host is defined, you specify the services in the services.cfg. For
example:

define service{
   use generic-service ; Name of
service template to use

   host_name   SydInt01
   service_description PING
   is_volatile 0
   check_period24x7
   max_check_attempts  11
   normal_check_interval   5
   retry_check_interval1
   contact_groups  fw
   notification_interval   120
   notification_period 24x7
   notification_optionsc,r
   check_command   check_ping!1000.0,20%!5000.0,100%
   }

I hope this helps some.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

[Nagios-users] Is it possible to nest check_by_ssh commands?

2007-03-27 Thread nemir nemiria
I have a nagios server monitoring a unix server and use check_by_ssh to get
results.  It works great.

I have recently added a second NIC to this server to allow it to see a few
boxes in a small isolated network. The nagios server can't see these boxes
directly and I was thinking that I might be able to nest check_by_ssh to run
some checks on things like disk and cpu.

From the unix server I can run the following on a command line and get an
appropriate response.

check_by_ssh -t 20 -H 192.168.166.2 -C /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_disk
-w 10% -c 7% -p /

If I try to encapsulate that into a nested check_by_ssh I get the following:

check_by_ssh -t 40 -H 172.30.30.216 -C /usr/local/nagios/check_by_ssh -t 20
\
-H 192.168.166.5 -C /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_disk -w 10% -c 7% -p
/
check_by_ssh: invalid option -- w
check_by_ssh: Unknown argument - (null)

Is this possible to do?

Or do I need to write some scripts to encapsulate the check_by_ssh command
instead?

TIA

Re: [Nagios-users] problems with check_traffic plugin displaying images

2006-11-21 Thread nemir nemiria

Has anybody able to get this plugins working, ie: be able to view the
graphs of the
monitored device bandwidth?
It works just fine except I can not display the graphs I get error is
the apache log

That sounds like Nagios is very happy.

  In the apache log, I have lines with this :
   Premature end script header ...

This is a classic apache problem. The Premature end of script headers
error message is probably the most loathed and common error message you'll
find. What the error actually means, is that the script stopped for whatever
reason before it returned any output to the web server. A common cause of
this for script writers is to fail to set a content type before printing
output code.

What do the apache logs say?

What does the source code of the page say?

Re: [Nagios-users] Monitoring disk state on Dell servers withNetware

2006-09-06 Thread nemir nemiria
Hi,

yes, we check free disk space with check_nwstat.
But I'm looking for a scpecial dell openmanage solution to check the
hardware disk state.

If you want that level of information you will need to implement SNMP and
either hope that there's a MIB available for the disks you've got or perhaps
write one yourself.

It isn't as hard as it sounds.

[Nagios-users] trouble installing plugins --with-openssl under ubuntu 5.10

2006-05-16 Thread nemir nemiria

I am having trouble compiling nagios-plugins 1.4.1 on an ubuntu 5.10 server.
 THe advice I have read in previous threads says to install openssl. I am
new to apt-get, but it wasn't too hard. Output from apt-get install openssl
is:

# apt-get install openssl
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
openssl is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.

# which openssl
/usr/bin/openssl

Whne I do a ./configure --with-openssl=/usr/bin I get the following summary.

config.status: creating po/Makefile
 --with-ping6-command: /bin/ping6 -n -U -w %d -c %d %s
  --with-ping-command: /bin/ping -n -U -w %d -c %d %s
 --with-lwres: no
  --with-ipv6: yes
 --with-mysql: no
   --with-openssl: no
--with-gnutls: no
 --enable-emulate-getaddrinfo: no
  --with-perl: /usr/bin/perl
--with-cgiurl: /nagios/cgi-bin
   --with-nagios-user: nagios
  --with-nagios-group: nagios
  --with-trusted-path: /bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin

Going through the ./configure output I notice:

checking openssl/ssl.h usability... no
checking openssl/ssl.h presence... no
checking for openssl/ssl.h... no
checking openssl/x509.h usability... no
checking openssl/x509.h presence... no

checking openssl/err.h usability... no
checking openssl/err.h presence... no
checking for openssl/err.h... no
checking ssl.h usability... no
checking ssl.h presence... no
checking for ssl.h... no

checking the config.log file I also notice:

configure:27062: checking openssl/ssl.h usability
configure:27074: gcc -c -g -O2  conftest.c 5
conftest.c:72:25: error: openssl/ssl.h: No such file or directory
configure:27080: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
| /* confdefs.h.  */

This is despite me having openssl installed as the notes suggest. None of
those files it is searching for seem to exist on my box (with the exception
of crypto.h, but that was hardly a surprise). What am I missing? I tried
running apt-get install openssl-dev[el], but it doesn't seem to exist under
that name here.

I am sure this is just something basic that I am not seeing at the moment,
but would really appreciate all hints and help available.

TIA

Nemir

RE: [Nagios-users] how to monitor CPU load in percentage utilization

2006-02-18 Thread nemir nemiria

Hi there.

  I have the requirement of monitoring CPU load in terms of percentage
utilization instead of the 1,5,15 mins average.Please forward me a plugin
if already developed by anyone in the list.

Nagios Exchange has many great plugins written by third parties.

You can find a check_cpu plugin that meets your requirements.

RE: [Nagios-users] Down when it is up

2005-12-24 Thread nemir nemiria

Nagios (Ver. 1.2) was just installed to monitor a VPN with 600 ATMs.

The problem we have is that some of the ATMs are shown as down but when
pinged the are really up. This happens in the ATMs that for any reason, are
working with the dial-up lines.

Reading the documentation it seems to me that the problem is the
configuration. Is there anything we can check?

There are a few things. Log into the nagios server as the nagios user and
run the command manually. That is often a good indicator of exactly what is
happening.

It might also be that the topology you describe doesn't always return
results of the check to the server within the default 10 seconds. You might
want to increase that to 20 seconds (or even more).

I am sure there is more that others could add. If this doesn't help it
might pay to post the exact command you're running and the output you see,
as well as the error on the nagios system, and perhaps othere (relevent)
parts of your nagios configs.

regards,

Nemir
