I remember a recent thread about a security guard shutting down a Colo
facility. It seems he hit the Emergency power off button while looking
for a way to silence a door alarm. Anyone know if he found a new job
with the power company?

I just got off the phone with an old boss of mine. ;-) It would appear
that there is a large fire at a ConEd plant that has now caused a
cascading power outage in the Northeast. Some more plants may have
tripped offline because of the load they absorbed from the loss of the
other plant.

If I get more information, I'll post.

RE: Power outage in North East

2003-08-14 Thread McBurnett, Jim

FROM CNN website

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A major power outage simultaneously struck several large cities in
the United States and Canada late Thursday afternoon.

Cities affected include New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit,
Michigan; Toronto, Ontario; and Ottawa, Ontario. The power outage occurred shortly
after 4 p.m.

Much of Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street were shut down, including all area airports
and the Long Island Railroad. The airports were operating on back-up power and
operations were reported to be normal, officials said.

The New York City Police Department said they were trying to determine what happened.
A Con Edison transformer on East 14th Street in Manhattan was afire, CNN learned.

Thousands of people could be seen leaving buildings and walking into the streets. New
York subways were reported stopped and people were trapped in the cars.

Sounds huge and probably bigger than just a single plant. Watching the
MSNBC/CNN feeds in the NOC shows everyone filing out of NYC on foot b/c
of lack of subway and traffic-light-induced gridlock.
The primary affect we've seen so far is the drop off in customer traffic
based on CPE being offline. No real hit to infrastructure yet.

latest word (on cnn.com) is that the niagara-mohawk grid (upstate NY and

i lost power here twice over a period of about 15 minutes (here being on
NYSEG, east of Albany NY, which is joined to Ni-Mo at the hip.) it's back
up, but i suspect it'll be shaky for a while.

all the burning transformers, etc., are all probably side effects of the
major power outage.

I just got a call from one of my tech's in the GBLX bldg in

But I also got a call from ATT in NY that they also lost Power!

It looks like a rather large power outage -- we're in South Western
   Ontario,
Canada, and power is out in Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, Hespler,
and
   (I'm
pretty sure) London as well. Can't say about Toronto.

Add Cleveland surrounding NE Ohio to the list. Word has it that much of
the Great Lakes area is beginning to power up starting from west to east.

 Other affected cities included Buffalo, Albany and Syracuse, N.Y.;
 Hartford, Conn.; Lansing and many other smaller cities in Michigan;
Akron and Toledo, Ohio; and Ottawa and Montreal in Ontario.

Washington and the federal government were not affected Neither were
much of New England - including all of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and
New Hampshire, southern Vermont and eastern Connecticut - and other
areas of Canada, including Quebec City.

Correction to the above snippet. Montreal Quebec City (Province of
Quebec; not Ontario as stated above) are on a separate power grid and
thus not affected by this outage.

 Right.. that's what it said:

...were not affected. Neither were...other areas of Canada, including
 Quebec City

Despite some news reports, Boston does not seem to be effected by the
blackout, nor is MA in general.

As I recall, there was some talk earlier this year about connecting the
MA grid to the NY area grid - but that talk got stalled. I think people
were worried about insufficient connectivity and resources, and getting
dragged down by just the kind of scenario we're seeing right now.

Anyone been able to verify the reports of the ConEd fire? The
helicopter coverage I saw on MSNBC in the NOC did not seem to show signs
of any fire.

but guessing is so much fun...

this, from a NERC spokesperson, is about as authoritative as you're
likely to get right now. NERC does know their business when it comes to
this stuff.

The North American Electric Reliability Council, an industry group
responsible for monitoring the integrity of the system, said the power
outages were widespread and appear to be centered around Lake Erie,
although they are affecting the entire eastern interconnection.
We do not know the cause at present but will continue to evaluate the
situation, said Ellen Vancko, speaking for the council.
