Route hijacking

2010-10-30 Thread Geoff Huston
My bgp monitor tells me:

*> 1.2.3.0/24 203.119.76.3 0 4608 1221 4637
3561 1299 12025 ?
*> 5.4.3.0/24 202.12.28.10 4777 2516 1239
1299 12025 ?

These are _not_ authorized announcements, so could

  AS3561 Savvis
  AS1299 Telia
  AS1239 Sprintlink

kindly DROP these unauthorized route advertisements (and clean up their route
acceptance processes so that they stop announcing unauthorized noise to the
rest of the Internet).

And could the folk who run AS12025 IO-DATA-CENTERS - IO Data Centers kindly
stop route hijacking?

I might also mention that I received private SPAM from a name we all
know and loath. (Hint: He's been banned from NANOG for VERY good
reason and his name is of French derivation.) I just added a filter to
block any mail mentioning pica8 and will see no more of this thread or

RE: IPv6 Routing table will be bloated?

2010-10-30 Thread Frank Bulk - iName.com
A combo WISP and pre-DOCSIS cable system we bought four years ago in a
relatively rural area had exactly such a setup with Sprint and
UUNet/Verizon/MCI. They had just one T-1 with each provider and a very
simple BGP configuration. I just checked, and see that their ASN has been
reused.

I beleive Jack said that they have redundant connections to his network. I
took that to mean that they did not multihome to different AS.

Such arrangements are not uncommon. Sprint seems to have done very well
selling this sort of near-turnkey service to rural DSL carriers, tiny single
town MSOs and the like.

Pica natively runs Linux and the code is Open Source. So, you can not
only run 3rd party code (like with Cisco AXP, Juniper Junos SDK or
Arista EOS), but also modify the Networking Stack according to your
needs that is a very interesting feature from an Operational point of
view and something that is not possible with
closed source OS like EOS, JUNOS and IOS.

Vyatta tries to make also an Open-Source Networking product but the
bottleneck is *the performance*.

The target is to attack Cisco by the bottom. Especially, there are a lot
of small operators (like the members of the NANOG) who are
interested by low-cost gear. To be more precise, Cisco doesn't loose
any significant Market Share due to the second market (used equipment)
that is worth many billions each year according to the UNEDA (United
Network Equipment Dealer Association).

They can't buy the latest Cisco gear but they are still used to Cisco,
because they buy refurbished Cisco gear.

Pica8 provides its first significant breakthrough there : to have an
access to the latest networking gear for the price of the refurbished
one. That is *$ 200 per 10G port* or half the price of the closest
competitor, Blade Network Technologies.

We definitely believe that a new networking product should only focus
on the Capex in the first place then think about the Opex in a
second step (OpenFlow).

I'm just wondering if this a guerilla launch for some new Oracle product
or project, or what, exactly? I'm _very_ confused.

Maybe Paul K. can clear it all up, but apparently he's out of the office
right now.

Consider this a formal request for root-plink, before we have a major
corp try to sell us a database solution or proprietary kernel via the

Me too

I've received direct spam as well about this crap as well, presumably
from list address harvesting from NANOG or other similar list. The way
to sell stuff to net admins is not to spam them; I have a special mail
folder that I store all such vendor spam to make sure I never
accidentally buy from them in the future.

Re: Weird Nexus AD

2010-10-30 Thread Tim Stevenson
am = adjacency manager. Since NXOS is a modular OS, different
processes/services source routes to the URIB, and AM is one of them.
OSPF, BGP, other RPs, HSRP, etc also feed their routes to the URIB.

AM really only feeds directly connected host prefixes (/32) to the
RIB (ie, for each resolved ARP entry). These entries are not shown in
sh ip route by default (unless you're running very old code) - I
assume you are using sh ip route am to see these? If so, completely expected.

We can take the discussion to cisco-nsp or offline if you need more
information.

Hope that helps,
Tim

At 09:36 PM 10/29/2010, Colby Glass uttered:

  system:version 4.2(2a)

I've read that am = adjacency module or adjacency manager. The words mean
less to me than why I seem to be learning this route from a phantom
module/manager/interface with no visible explanation.

I can try on c-nsp as well. Thought NANOG might be a better choice.
