Software for tracking network related projects and activities

2016-09-01 Thread Manuel Marín
Dear Nanog community

We are currently using RT for tracking tasks related to network operations
like BGP configuration change requests, circuit/ports activation, support
tickets, etc, but when trying to track multiple activities that involve
multiple departments, the RT (Request Tracker) system does not provide all
the tools as a project/tasks management system. I was wondering if you can
share what you use for tracking network related projects and activities.

Thank you in advance

L3 over OTN vs pure IP/MPLS

2016-07-07 Thread Manuel Marín
Dear Nanog community

We are currently experimenting TCP degradation issues in some metro markets
where there are multiple POPs and the IP packets have to pass multiple L3
access devices (routers) before reaching the core router. The more L3 hops
that it goes through the more degradation we see in the Internet service.
L3 routers have the capacity in terms of pps and BW and we are using just a
small percentage of that capacity but anyway the service is degraded (No
CRC/Input errors in the links). A couple of vendors are recommending using
OTN or MPLS-TP to backhaul the connections from the access to the core but
obviously deploying OTN means a considerable amount of capex. The
flexibility and simplicity of the L3 based access network is great but
given the performance issues we are experimenting I would appreciate if you
can share your experience/recommendation with either OTN or MPLS-TP. Does
it really make sense to use a OTN/Photonic layer to backhaul the L3
connections in a metro network?

Your input is greatly appreciated

Thanks and have a great day

Monitoring system recommendation

2016-06-06 Thread Manuel Marín
Dear Nanog community

We are currently planning to upgrade our monitoring system (Opsview) due to
scalability issues and I was wondering what do you recommend for monitoring
5000 hosts and 35000 services. We would like to use a monitoring system
that is compatible with the nagios plugin format, however we are not sure
if systems like Icinga/Shinken/Op5 are the way to go.

Is someone using systems like Op5 or Icinga2 for monitoring > 5000 hosts?
Would you recommend commercial systems like Sevone, Zabbix, etc instead of
open source ones?

Your input is really appreciated it

Thank you and have a great day

Software for circuit documentation

2016-04-18 Thread Manuel Marín
Dear Nanog community

We are looking for a network inventory software to document logical
circuits and fibers. We have been using Racktables for cross connects and
racks documentation and works great, but we did find a way to document
MPLS, Eline/ELAN, OTN, SONET, IP circuits, external plant (fibers), etc.

I would appreciate if you can share what you use for documentation.

Thank you and have a great day

10G tester recommendation

2016-03-20 Thread Manuel Marín
Hi Nanog community

We are looking 10G testers for BER and RFC2544 tests and I was wondering if
additional to the JDSU/Viavi, is there something else that you can
recommend like Exfo, Fluke, etc?

Your input will be appreciate it

Thank you and have a great day

Access switch for small business recommendation

2015-02-18 Thread Manuel Marín
Dear nanog community

I'm looking for a cost effective access switch for FTTB active fiber
deployments. We are currently using Accedian demarcation devices but it's
probably an overkill for customers that only require a basic internet
service. The basic requirements we are looking for are:

* Vlan support in order to deploy multiple services
* 1 or 2 SFP ports
* 4 10/100/1000
* Dying gasp (in order to identify if the equipment is down because power
issue)
* Rate limit per port
* SNMP support to check SFP DDM values
* Rack mountable

I would appreciate if you can share what you use for these type of
requirements.

Thank you and have a great day

Re: Low cost WDM gear

2015-02-07 Thread Manuel Marín
Hi Mike

I can recommend a couple of vendors that provide cost effective solutions.
Ekinops Packetlight.

I know there are various Asian vendors for low cost (less than $500) muxes
to throw 16 or however many colors onto a strand. However, they don't work
so well when you don't control the optics used on both sides (therefore
must use standard wavelengths), obviously only do a handful of channels and
 have a distance limitation.

What solutions are out there that don't cost an arm and a leg?

Recommended wireless AP for 400 users office

2015-01-28 Thread Manuel Marín
Dear nanog community

I was wondering if you can recommend or share your experience with APs that
you can use in locations that have 300-500 users. I friend recommended me
Ruckus Wireless, it would be great if you can share your experience with
Ruckus or with a similar vendor. My experience with ubiquity for this type
of requirement was not that good.

Thank you and have a great day

Recommended L2 switches for a new IXP

2015-01-11 Thread Manuel Marín
Dear Nanog community

We are trying to build a new IXP in some US Metro areas where we have
multiple POPs and I was wondering what do you recommend for L2 switches. I
know that some IXPs use Nexus, Brocade, Force10 but I don't personally have
experience with these switches. It would be great if you can share your
experience and recommendations. There are so many options that I don't know
if it makes sense to start with a modular switch (usually expensive because
the backplane, dual dc, dual CPU, etc) or start with a 1RU high density
switch that support new protocols like Trill and that supposedly allow you
to create Ethernet Fabric/Clusters. The requirements are simple, 1G/10G
ports for exchange participants, 40G/100G for uplinks between switches and
flow support for statistics and traffic analysis.

Thank you and have a great day.

DDOS solution recommendation

2015-01-08 Thread Manuel Marín
Nanog group

I was wondering what are are using for DDOS protection in your networks. We
are currently evaluating different options (Arbor, Radware, NSFocus,
RioRey) and I would like to know if someone is using the cloud based
solutions/scrubbing centers like Imperva, Prolexic, etc and what are the
advantages/disadvantages of using a cloud base vs an on-premise solution.
It would be great if you can share your experience on this matter.

Thank you

Typical warranty for generic DWDM transceivers

2013-08-20 Thread Manuel Marín
Dear nanog group

We are currently evaluating the use of generic third party optics (SFP+ and
XFP) for 40Kms and 80Kms applications from vendors like NHR and Champion
One and I was wondering if someone in the group has experience using optics
from these vendors. My concern is about quality/reliability. They are
suppose to provide lifetime warranty, however as far as I know the life
time for DWDM optics is between 3 to 5 years.

Could someone share their experience with using generic optics for DWDM
applications?

Thank you
