Re: Verizon/Qwest single end-user difficulty vs Xfinity (was Re: NANOG Digest, Vol 182, Issue 14)

2023-03-19 Thread Tom Daly
Jeff,

Since you are using bridge mode, try adjusting down the MTU supported
through the network. We have observed that a realistic MTU for Verizon 5G
home internet is about 1428 bytes.

Good luck,

Tom

Hi NANOG'ers,

Reaching out for help - having troubles with email delivery into O365

RBL checks, etc.

For some reason, this one is vexxing me. Anyone from Microsoft on the list

Improved for sure. Thanks for the outreach.

Looks to me like there may still be some lingering issues:

TLD .so Partial Outage?

2021-05-16 Thread Tom Daly
Hello NANOG'ers!

I'm observing a near global outage of DNS services from d.nic.so. This appears
to be an AfriNIC anycast DNS service.

Does anyone have contacts at AfriNIC for their DNS systems available?

e.nic.so seems to be responding (hosted behind PCH, thanks Woody!).

NANOG 55: Submit your Lightning Talks!

2012-06-03 Thread Tom Daly
Hello NANOG 55'ers,
Welcome to Vancouver. On behalf of the NANOG Program Committee, I'm pleased to
announce that we're accepting Lightning Talk submissions via our tool at
https://pc.nanog.org/. Log in, submit a talk, and wait. We'll be announcing the
first round of LTs late this evening.

How does it work?
- You come up with an idea for a 10 minute talk. You submit an abstract to the
tool at https://pc.nanog.org.
- The Program Committee reviews the talks in the tool, and each PC member rates
their top 3 choices.
- Around 10pm Sunday and Tuesday evenings, we'll select the top 3 rated talks
in the tool, and include them in the following day's Lightning Talk session.
- If you are selected to present a Lightning Talk, you'll be notified by email
on how to submit your slides to the NANOG PC.

No idea is too ridiculous for a talk! No topic is too crazy! Submit your talk
now and enjoy the rush of a being a real, live, NANOG presenter!

For the NANOG PC,
Tom Daly

Re: Force10 E Series at the edge?

2012-03-27 Thread Tom Daly
Brent,
Your options include, for smaller boxes:

- Brocade CER series, but make sure you the -RT versions due to RAM (haven't
tried, though)
- Juniper MX (MX80 is working well for us)
- Cisco ASR1006 (heard a lot about BGP price issues)

But for 300mb/sec, what not OpenBSD + Quagga?

OT: Jay Adelson Keynote Video?

2011-05-11 Thread Tom Daly
Folks,

At NANOG 43, Jay Adelson had a video clip in his presentation which celebrated
the hilarity that customers create for network engineers. Does anyone have a
link to the video? A review of the abstract
(http://nanog.org/meetings/nanog43/abstracts.php?pt=NDMmbmFub2c0Mw==&nm=nanog43)
and google'ing high and low yielding no results. I seem to recall it being on
BitGravity, but I don't have the URL.

[NANOG-announce] NANOG 52 CFP Reminder: Slides due 4/11

2011-04-10 Thread Tom Daly
NANOG'ers,
On Thursday, 4/14, the NANOG Program Committee will meet to review submissions
for NANOG 52. In an effort to get a topic list our the community as early as
requested (tentative for 4/15), we do need to have all abstracts and slide
submissions in as soon as possible. A quick review of the PC tool indicates
that we don't have enough content for the meeting yet, so please submit your
work ASAP!

You can submit your abstract, or upload your slides at https://pc.nanog.org.

Have a good weekend,

Regarding 40G/100G, I'm sure some in the NANOG community have some feeling
towards 40G as it was intended to be a server platform standard. With
architectures such as 1aq, TRILL, VL2, etc, there may be some grounds here.
What's the good of 100G if you can't push the PPS, for example. Just a
thought...

George,
Good point. Perhaps the context should be more nebulous? Given a choice in an
ideal word, not limited by the selection of hardware manufactures, which do you
prefer? ras did a good talk on optics in the past, I'm sure there's some points
to discuss.

Alright, added. Are you volunteering to speak to one point or the other?

They are meant to be informative. Maybe you have no idea on what XFP or SFP+ is
because you've been running a Gigabit based network and haven't made the jump
to 10GE yet - the debate might give you the top 3-5 points on why each might be
the right option for you. And then, of course, there is a fun factor.

Lightning Debates at NANOG 51

2010-12-07 Thread Tom Daly
Folks,
I've been tempted by the NANOG PC into trying to run some "Lightning Debates"
at NANOG 51 in Miami. The idea, similar to lighting talks, is a 30 minute
session, covering 3 debate topics, 10 minutes each. Each person would get 5
minutes to argue their side of the issue.

Some ideas so far:

UPS Systems: Battery vs. Flywheel

Cooling: Raised floor vs. Underfloor

Power: AC vs. DC

Ethernet: 40GE vs. 100GE

Optics: XFP vs. SFP+

Address Families: IPv4 vs. IPv6

I'm soliciting panelists, and ideas. Please let me know if you're interested in
participating in what will hopefully be a unique and exciting session.

Best,
Tom

[NANOG-announce] Update: NANOG 49 CFP

2010-05-05 Thread Tom Daly
Hello Fellow NANOG'ers,

TLDR: The PC is still looking for great content for NANOG 49. Go upload
abstracts and tutorials at https://pc.nanog.org.

Just a quick note on behalf of the NANOG Program Committee that our next PC
call will be next Tuesday, May 11th. Shortly after this meeting, we hope to
post a draft agenda for NANOG 49, but we need your help - we still need a bit
more content! For those of you that have submitted abstracts, now is a great
time to upload your slides into the PC tool at https://pc.nanog.org, and for
those who might want to give a talk to upload their abstracts and slides into
the tool, again at https://pc.nanog.org.

And while you're at it, take the time to go register for the conference at
https://nanog.merit.edu/registration/, the Early Bird rate is still open.

Thanks, and looking forward to seeing you all in San Francisco!

[NANOG-announce] REMINDER: CFP for NANOG 48

2010-01-04 Thread Tom Daly
Hello Fellow NANOG'ers,

As you all should know by now, NANOG 48 is coming up in February. The NANOG
Program Committee has been busily recruiting, collecting, and reviewing
submissions for the program, however, we still need more content. We have lined
up many interesting Tracks and Panels, but need more General Session
submissions - to learn more about what you're up to in your networks and what
is important to you!

The NANOG 48 Call for Presentations is still available at
http://www.nanog.org/meetings/nanog48/index.php. The PC will be having a call
next Tuesday to review submissions, and would like to have more material to
review.

So what that means:
 - YOU: Go think of something you think is important to the NANOG Community
 - YOU: Write up some slides (PDF format prefered)
 - YOU: Submit them to the PC tool (https://pc.nanog.org)
 - WE, THE PC: Tell you how awesome your presentation looks
 - YOU: Present at NANOG 48 and take all the credit for your awesome talk!

Yes, it really is that simple. Do it now!

Shamelessly, for the NANOG PC,

Tom Daly

2009-10-19 Thread Tom Daly
Hi Folks,
Here's the skinny:

Sunday tutorials were not live broadcast, but were recorded, and will be
encoded and placed online shortly after the meeting.

The General Session from Monday and Tuesday was/will be broadcasted live.

Also, Dani Rosiman's talk on Tuesday on the BGP Metric System will be
broadcasted.

The ISP Security Track and Peering Track are not broadcast live, no recorded.
