Still had the same problem, so I discarded my local repository and
cloned again from scratch.  I'm still not sure what the problem was,
but I notice that this new repository includes my BitBucket username
in the URL, while the old one did not.  AFAIK that should not matter,
but perhaps it did somehow.

$ git remote -v
origin  https://apisk...@bitbucket.org/naviserver/naviserver.git (fetch)
origin  https://apisk...@bitbucket.org/naviserver/naviserver.git (push)
