I'm not familiar with debian's tools for managing the rc scripts, but
you should probably run "chkconfig --add xfs" (or symlink the init
script appropriately) 

That way it'll survive a reboot.

I'm running Debian Woody.  I upgraded according to the instructions at
xfree86.org, using the Xinstall.sh script.  (I've never had great luck
upgrading X with apt-get . . . not that this go has been particularly
successful . . .)

/etc/init.d/xfs start

The new config file uses a font server instead of a fixed font path.
You may want to eithe start a font serer (assuming you have it
configured okay) or change the font path in your XF86Config.

I'm a bit of a Newbie myself when it comes to XFree86.  Ummm, are you using
RedHat, Debian or what?  How did you do the upgrade?

Thanks!  Now I'm making a small bit of progress.  I've attached my
latest XFree86.0.log file.  Unfortunately, no .xsession-errors file
available.  It boils down to:

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

Google.com pointed me to various and sundry causes for this error.  I've
run mkfontdir on all of my font directories.  Any ideas where I should
begin?
