I did the same with a neon lamp once. It glowed really 
bright, for a short while.   Ira

Since these aren't rare tubes (yet...), I'm tempted to repeat an 
experiment I did in high school with a 0A2 regulator tube: I cranked 
so much current thru it that the plate glowed red-hot, the glass 
softened and due to the vacuum, and it shrank around the metal. 
Watching the poor tube shrivel-up and die made me laugh so hard I cried.

Yup - the online versions have been around for a few years - there are many
other classic engineering/scientific texts available as PDFs too...

However, some folk like to have hard-copy (as I mentioned in the original
post), so this is a cheap(ish) source - original copies are now a) rare,
and b) expensive (typically $60 and more each).
