I've built seven clocks so far. The wiring of #8 is done; it just needs a

[neonixie-l] Book PDF if anyone wants it - Amateurreihe electronica 171 - Electronische Anzeigebauelemente

2019-07-16 Thread David Pye
Hi all,

I've got a PDF scanned copy of the 1970s German nixie/vfd/led display
bible,

Amateurreihe electronica 171 - Electronische Anzeigebauelemente

As published by the East German military publishing house!

Although it is indeed old, it has quite a lot of useful information about
how to drive tubes in multiplex mode etc. Please note it is in German.

The URL is here:

http://www.davidmpye.com/external_files/nixie/Anzeigebaue%20Elemente%20by%20Winfried%20Muller.pdf

Its about 20something MB. I do hope to get around to trying to translate
it at some point, but in the meantime, grab it as a Save as, while you can
:-)

[neonixie-l] Re: Power for six (6) GR10G Nixies: 300VDC @ 40mA - small switching PSU?

2019-07-16 Thread GastonP
Mike's power supplies have a "pulse" output to where you can tie a
mutiplier to get higher output voltage than what the board alone offers.

https://threeneurons.wordpress.com/nixie-power-supply/hv-supply-kit/

In one of the examples in that page you have one showing 310V, etc. From
back of the envelope calculations one can get not more than 15 mA out of
each module at 300V...

[neonixie-l] Group librarian wanted...

2019-07-16 Thread neonixie-l
Folks,

It'd be great if we could have a volunteer (or two) to consolidate all
these interesting PDFs that are around - we have a library section which
has loads of space - I just don't have the time at the moment to manage it
(see the building project in the workshop thread).

We'd really appreciate if someone could take this on - not too onerous, and
think of all the kudos you'd get!

Cheers

My new clock using ZM1000s will use one or two Burroughs -/+ and they will
blink once per second

[neonixie-l] What's this 12 digit VFD tube?

2019-07-16 Thread 'Mike Playle' via neonixie-l
This eBay seller is offering IV-18 tubes with 8 digits:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-NIXIE-TUBE-IV-18-B-18-INDICATOR-TUBE-FOR-VINTAGE-VFD-NIXIE-CLOCK-2-PIECES/323778077294?hash=item4b62ad626e&_trkparms=ispr%3D1

However, photo 2 clearly doesn't relate to the IV-18. Instead it depicts a
longer tube with 12 digits, and wires at both ends.

Does anyone know the part number of this longer tube?

Mike

Nixie tubes were in their heyday during the Apollo lunar program. Today is
the 50th anniversary of the launch of the first lunar-landing mission, and
there is website with an excellent collection of audio recordings of the

Re: [neonixie-l] What's this 12 digit VFD tube?

2019-07-16 Thread Nicholas Stock
You're most welcome. IV18's have been getting more and more expensive (due
to both the Adafruit Icetube clock and also Yan's clock presumably), but
the larger version IV27-M has been relatively cheap (relative being the
operative word here...) as there's no kit out there for it and it is
slightly more complicated to use (wires from both ends of the glass).

Cheers,

Nick

Based on prior experience (and I think we discussed this earlier in the
NixieBase thread) we should use our own site for this. Group hosts simply can't
be trusted.

All files should be free and clear if for no other reason than that
password-protected, "secure" pdf files are NOT secure. There are apps that can
decrypt them. I'm thinking in particular of Dieter Waechter's documents at
http://www.tube-tester.com.

I'll certainly take all I can get but when I think about such a project my eyes
start to glaze over. What I need is encouragement.

I have been thinking a lot about the NixieBase project but that's a topic for a
new thread.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Seen this on eBay!?

2019-07-16 Thread Dylan Distasio
I just got mine in today. FYI, for anyone who is in the US, I neglected to
notice that this unit come set to 220V by default. Although I am not very
good with transformers, I noted in the manual it said that the taps could
be changed, so I decided to open the case and take my chances :-). It has
two windings in parallel, with taps for 0, 100, 110, and 117. There was a
jumper connecting the two windings at 0/110 (for 220 total). I unsoldered
that, and unsoldered the remaining wire on the second winding to 117V and
resoldered it to 117 on the first, crossed my fingers to avoid the magic
smoke and turned it on. I was greeted with a nice orange glow across all 5
tubes showing zeros! I've never actually used a FC before so I have to
figure out plugging something into it to check other digits but it looks to
be in working order as far as I can tell.

I think the most important thing is some kind of succession planning.

it's pointless to curate a fantastic resource of nixie documents if
something happens to the curator, and the whole lot gets lost.

I'm not sure what the solution to such digital obsolence issues are
however.!

Re: [neonixie-l] Group librarian wanted...

2019-07-16 Thread Tyler Bourne
A community owned and operated site would be the only way to ensure ongoing
availability. As long as there are at least three administrators it should
survive.

Organizing the files in the file section here first would help though and
make an eventual move over to a database site easier.

For some reason the picture didn't come through my email client. It's not
visible on the group web page, either.

I ran it through German OCR which did a passable job - it would be better
if the document were B&W and the pages were not skewed. I can cut and paste
pages into Google Translate and get meaningful English out. There are some
errors, but you can always look at the original page and see what's going
on, and paste the correct characters into the Google Translate input box. I
also then ran the whole thing through a German -> English translation
program and saved that as a text file. Here's a sample of what it looks
like (in one of the better parts):

The OCR'd PDF is at:

Even more off-topic - I have some of the original Launch Complex 39A tower
headset control boxes - if you see an image of someone with a headset up on
the tower, these are the boxes they plugged the headset into to talk to
Launch Control. I can take some pictures and post them if you like.
