I would also say the instructions and ‘how it works’ are great with Grahame and
Nick giving really excellent support.

The kit is well thought out. So good, I built the Fortress clock and now I am
in them idle of the Dekatron clock….

It’s a pleasure to build.

Please forgive the blatant endorsement

This is a most excellent kit - extremely well thought out, a great pleasure to
build and to own whether you like dekatrons or not.

.. and it's so much more than just a clock (in fact, telling the time is the
last thing I look at it for!) It's visually impressive with an infinitely
configurable array of back and underlighting options as well as speakers for
output of chimes and many other goodies.

Great work Grahame and Nick.

I have a few dekatron clocks available from the first batch of kits I
made up and Nick has his cases available. Details are here:

Nick will also sell built and cased clocks. We have dekatrons available.
The prices and open source documentation are available on the webpages.
I will be making up further kits in the future.

If you are interested, I am currently making up kits for a second batch
of our E1T clock:

http://www.sgitheach.org.uk/fortress.html

If you want to lodge your interest with me then please do so and I will
be back in touch when the kits are ready. I have a limited stock of E1T
tubes.

Nick has built and cased clocks available now - details are here

Please PM Nick or I (or both) and please don't reply to the list.

Currently working on the B-5870 version, all digits and decimal points work
fine. I really like these nixies…
Any recommendation for the anode resistor value (170V)?
In the datasheet the anode resistor value is 7.5k, so I’m using 8.2k but not
sure if that is too low.

Hi Jack

Nick Stock and I are working on a 7 dekatron clock that uses British counter
tubes (e.g. GC10B and variants). We hope to have modifications for Soviet OG4
and American 6802 as well. The hardware based on the Fortress E1T Clock:

http://www.sgitheach.org.uk/fortress.html

(which you know well ^_^) but without the heater PSU and with drivers for
dekatrons rather than E1T tubes. The (optional) standard case will be based on
laser cut acrylic and 3D components for assembly.

Here's the first prototype:

[cid:part1.045139D2.1DD46413@googlemail.com]

[cid:part2.1F39A534.E0B9EA78@googlemail.com]

The prototype is up and running... I would hope the kits will be available next
summer. The hold up is that we are moving house in January and I expect that
SHMBO will have a job list as long as both my arms... Putting my workshop
together won't be high on the list.

If anyone is interested in following progress of this kit then please email me
and I'll keep you up to date without burdening this list.

Cheers Grahame

I guess I will need a GPS / Clock repeater as well as a new CPU module.

Obviously put me down for one set!

Subject: [neonixie-l] Re: Constant current regulator for Nixies

What is your method of current regulation? For example, do you use a PnP
transistor or the lm317 method, or something else? I have room to add something
for my anodes, but I'm unsure if using a transistor would be accurate.

On Sunday, 14 August 2016 03:02:17 UTC-4, gregebert wrote:
I use current-regulation on my nixie designs, and I've done cathode-side as
well as anode-side regulation. Where you decide to regulate the current
depends upon the driver you select. So far, all of my designs use direct-drive
(non-multiplexed).

My 'Tomorrowland' clock uses HV5532 drivers (it has fourteen IN-18 tubes), so I
regulate current on each anode. Yes, there are 14 current regulators My
wristwatch uses NPN transistors to drive the cathodes, so I regulate the
current on each segment.

Since 10mA fuses really aren't available, I size the resistor in the
current-regulator so that it will operate at about 1/2 it's rated power during
normal operation. For example, an 0805 SMT resistor is rated for 1/8 Watt, so I
try to design for around 50-60mW. If a gross failure in the regulator occurs,
the resistor should overheat and open. I have not tested it, though. I have a
fuse on the power supply, and use the smallest value that will handle max
operating current.

If you really want to be paranoid, monitor all of your anode currents with a
multi-channel ADC. I've never done that, but it sounds like a fun project.

For cathode current-regulation, you would use an NPN or NMOS transistor;
anode-side would use a PNP or PMOS. I found that high-voltage PMOS devices
aren't nearly as common as NMOS.

If you use MOS devices, I'd recommend a zener-diode across gate-source and also
very-high resistors (10Meg +) across drain-source to protect from ESD or
unanticipated voltage spikes. It's probably overkill but SMT devices are so
cheap and small it's worth the cost to me.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: FLW Clocks

2015-04-16 Thread Jack Buechler
As the B7971’s are so expensive these days, perhaps we should look for really
large VFD’s. Or LED matrices.

One of the important points in using them, as you already noted is to look
good, they need to have accurate spacing, so it sort of rules out individual
LED’s - which are really cheap.

I like the idea of a scrolling clock or FLW – these days micros are not
expensive. So it should not be too difficult to do a large scrolling clock then
the issue of four, five, six , sever or more scrolling words is not an issue,
especially if the matrices can be banked together.

Subject: [neonixie-l] Re: FLW Clocks

I've been tempted - not with B7971s but with a 40 character VFD I have had in
the JB for years. It could scroll six letter words and even jargon nicely and
there are no gaps between the three groups of 2 digits as in the 6 digit clock.
As someone else said, memory space is the issue - I built a FLW a few years ago
and that one had about 4000 words in memory with is 16000 letters. That's fine
for the 32K micro I used. The 6 letter word lists on the net have between 15000
and 22000 words depending on censorship level. Taking the larger number, that's
132000 characters which is quite do-able with a larger micro. On my FLW I kept
all the dirty words and have a selector switch on the back to keep it clean
when required, such as when the grandkids get fascinated reading the words.
There plenty of VFDs on the e-place in the $100 range.

Currently I'm using the VFD in a speaking clock that emulates the old telephone
time service :-)

I bought my cache many years ago when they were 35 euros each - the price now

Easy to sell for $750 for a set of 6. The bigger issue on ebay is if you can
trust the seller or not. And the fact that MOST of those auctions say as is
or not tested. I do have to say that my favorite auction was the one showing
the crack and stating you only need to fix the crack and refill with gases.
Heh.

Buy them and keep them for an investment. I would happily sell ya a set of
four for a Bitcoin.

Also, it's hard to appreciate that big clock until you have it in front of you.
You might just want one for each room. I mean, they all sync up to the same
GPS signal transmitter. I spent days running from room to room seeing if the
time was dead on accurate. Ok, JK.

I think there are people in this group that have the clocks for sale as well.
Half the fun and appreciation is building it yourself. :]

RE: [neonixie-l] Re: Micro Nixie Controller board

2013-05-23 Thread Jack Buechler
It does not matter how accurate or stable the clock is - if it set incorrectly
at the start to a non-precise reference it will accurately show the wrong time.
The offset will be maintained for a very long time.

Therefore the use of a GPS input becomes important.

The combination of your great work and precision, makes these types of clocks
very useful as timepieces.

I strongly urge you to offer GPS input as at least an option.

Please also do not forget to include the ability to add offsets +- in hours and
minutes so that the clock can be used worldwide not everyone is in the EST time
zone

My board will support GPS input - I have the necessary pins (Rx, Tx) to talk to
a GPS module. It will be an option with the board.
