I bought the first Nixisat from Jeff, a cylinder one in Dec '03. Then the bug bit again in late '08 and found a wood base one on eBay, snatched it up, the seller just happened to be John Miktuk who wrote the firmware. Later he discovered a Nixisat base, one of his development prototypes and I bought that one as well and i populated it with all red Z568M tubes in it for something different. Since then the nixie fever has only gotten worse, but for the better. :) I can't count anymore the number of tubes and clocks, I suppose that means I have definitely arrived. I came in at the tail-end of the MOD_SIX project and purchased #49 and #50 of the first production run, I can't wait to put my 7971 tubes to use, I haven't been this excited about anything in a while though I'm also ordering two of the Cogwheel X8 kits as well, I am intrigued with the idea of a bunch of alphanumeric nixies with a Bluetooth computer interface, I am really excited to see what can be done with it. Re: [neonixie-l] Re: CD47 - new price record?
I used to think that my wife barely put up with my nixie clock problem.. I would hear things like There are no rooms left in the house without a nixie clock! Where in the hell do you plan on putting THIS one?... and then I got into amateur radio, and she learned to wish that I still was just into nixie clocks. :D The week that she went away and came home with a 52' antenna in the attic.. I was playing it cool, she didn't know anything about it... and then the first time I keyed up and every CRT in the house went berserk and my voice came out of every speaker... and QRM'd every cordless phone... she realized that she should have treasured the time when I was just heavily into building nixie clocks. :) The above slightly humorous jokes aside, I strongly recommend that anyone who is interested in getting along with their wife pick up a copy of this book: http://www.bettermen.org/better-men-store.asp Also, if you bring your wife home flowers every Friday, then she will put up with a lot more of your crap. -Adam On Sat, Jun 4, 2011 at 10:25 AM, Wayne de Geere III wa...@degeere.comwrote: Oh yeah, the wife. She'd forgive me, but she'd get her vengeance somewhere along the line. It's called holy deadlock. But true love conquers all... Re: [neonixie-l] Re: CD47 - new price record?
I'm a big fan of Jeff's clocks. Back in December 2003 I paused and wondered if $1200 was too much to spend on a clock. At the time Jeff was also selling spare Z568M tubes to purchasers of his clocks for $35 each. My first from him was a cylindrical Nixisat. At that time he had already sold 8 of the 10 cylinder Nixisats in that round acrylic enclosure, I have cursed myself ever since for not having bought both. That was the beginning of my nixie clock fever and now, thousands of dollars in tubes and clocks later, I keep my eyes open for those parting with Jeff's clocks on eBay, they don't come around that often, people just don't let them go. My tube of 2011 is turning out to be the B-7971, I've been gathering them from the four corners of the globe for Cogwheel's X8 bluetooth, the MOD-SIX_7971 project and some other FLW devices as they come around. I've also recently bought a few B8971s (the smaller version of the B7971) but I don't have anything to put them into... yet. On my long term must have list are the Rodan CD47 and F9020AA tube clocks. I'm also hoping to commission Michael Barile to create a Z568M clock or two as well, I'm a big fan and most of his clocks as they are derived from Jeff Thomas GPS disciplined hardware and John Miktuk's firmware. What other tubes are others particularly enchanted in? On 2011 Jun 01, at 18:42 , Greg P wrote: Wayne I'm glad someone else agrees with my opinion of the Z568M/ Z5680M's... I think the IN-18 tubes are a smaller, more affordable version and I've given several of Jeff's Nixichron clocks as gifts, everyone who has received one has been delighted by them. On 2011 Jun 01, at 17:03 , Greg P wrote: I might be in the minority here, but I still think the Z568M Z5680M's are by far the most attractive and properly proportioned Nixie I've ever seen. Yeah! that's right. But if 1000 CD47 would be on the market, I would buy them in one lot. ;-) ... and then you'd have twice as many as you do now, right? ;-) A.J. No, I wouldn't -unfortunately ;-( All sources I knew are sold out now. But at the moment I concentrate on small nixies. I have found out that I like the small more than the large... suddenly ... I don't know why. I never took much care of them - but since I made the Little Blue Something clock (with Claus Urbach) I have changed my minds. Out curiosity, do you think that this zeal to purchase rare tubes extends to the similarly-rare F9020AA? We may see a bunch of them becoming available on ebay soon, owing to the recent discovery of a large lot at an estate sale. I don't know - but the tastes differ! I - for example - don't like the flat shape of the F9020AA. These are mor for collecting than making a clock with them (in my mind) - so I would not pay more than 50 EUR each. RE: Re: [neonixie-l] Re: CD47 - new price record?
Briefly, - I acquired a significant number of these at the estate sale of a ham operator who was apparently quite the collector of nixies. Fortunately, most people see nixies as being old dusty tubes and simply move on. So I was able to pick up the lot of his nixie (and numitron!!! and ultronic!!) collection for $200, which includes many F9020AA's in the their original carton with gray packing cotton shrouds. I couldn't possibly use all of these myself and am pondering offering them on ebay so others can similarly enjoy their peculiar oval form-factor and generous digit size. With the recent tube inflation (which I find to be just crazy) the question in my mind is when to offer them and at what starting bid. Looking at the price curve for Z568M's, GR47's B-7971's, B-8971's, and now even the IN-18's, over the past decade, it appears that prices are still rising rapidly. So what is a reasonable starting bid for them? 100? 500? or 1000 even? I know that several have mentioned that the oval form-factor of the 9020 is a bit quirky, but to the credit of this tube's aesthetics, the numbers are very well proportioned and quite elegant (unlike the lanky aspect ratio of the Rodan's digits). I am looking forward to making a six digit 9020 clock. This will be a large piece. [neonixie-l] Re: CD47 - new price record?
I might be in the minority here, but I still think the Z568M Z5680M's are by far the most attractive and properly proportioned Nixie I've ever seen. CD47's may be big, but the shapes of the digits are too stretched out and not very proportional IMHO. Just look at the number 4 cathode, with it's funky shape and off center glowing lead off bottom standoff. Maybe I would think differently if I owned a set, but not a high priority for my collection, especially at those prices. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups neonixie-l group. Re: [neonixie-l] Re: CD47 - new price record?
I do agree and I currently own three Z568M/Z5680M clocks, all from Jeff Thomas. They really are in so many ways the perfect large nixie, proportionally as well as filament shape. I think the IN-18 tubes are a smaller, more affordable version and I've given several of Jeff's Nixichron clocks as gifts, everyone who has received one has been delighted by them. [neonixie-l] Re: CD47 - new price record?
If I had a spare $million, my retirement dream is to go to Thailand, and set up a real production-quality Nixie and perhaps other vacuum tube factory. It wouldn't have to make money, just be sustainable on its endowment and modest sales. Such a thing might be what it takes to crash the market. For me, very old or peculiar tubes are much more interesting. Jens Am 01.06.2011 23:32, schrieb Nicholas Stock: Somebody needs to start making these again.then the market will crash!
