Bad engine ID value after -e flag

2006-01-24 Thread Eugen

Hi,

I’m currently testing the SNMP
v3 traps (net-snmp 5.2.1.2 for RH).and I encounter the
error “Bad engine ID value after -e flag” when my agent starts.

Here are the details:

snmpd.conf

-

trapsess "-e
0x0102030405 -v 3 -u myuser -a MD5 -A my_password -l authNoPriv" localhost

# SNMPv3 user

rwuser myuser

myuser was created
as follow:

net-snmp-config
--create-snmpv3-user -a "my_password" myuser

snmptrapd.conf

--

createUser -e
0x0102030405 myuser MD5 my_password
DES my_password

Using this configuration I’m
able to send snmpv3 traps with snmptrap:

snmptrap
-e0x0102030405 -v3 -umyuser -aMD5 –Amy_password -lauthNoPriv localhost 42 coldStart.0

…and the traps are correctly
intercepted by snmptrapd.

However this is just for test. What
I need to do is to send traps from my agent using send_v2trap API.

But when the agent starts up it
parses the snmpd.conf and I get that error.

I’ve tried also the oldEngineID from /var/net-snmp/snmptrapd.conf
(even that this match is only required for inform) and the result is the same.

In snmpcmd
man page the –e EngineId is optional but if I
remove that switch from snmpd.conf I receive another
error message:

Invalid version specified after -v
flag:  3 -u myuser
-a MD5 -A my_password -l authNoPriv

Could someone help me with this?

Thanks a lot!

Eugen

Try without the double quotes.

RE: Bad engine ID value after -e flag

2006-01-24 Thread Eugen
Hi Thomas,

Without double quotes there is no error message indeed but the traps are
not intercepted by snmptrapd.

I've put the double quotes because there are also generated by snmpconf.

However if I send v2 traps with the directive
trap2sink localhost
it works.

Thanks,
Eugen

Receiving with snmptrapd is a different story. Did you read the tutorial
on SNMPv3 notifications?

Thomas,

By mistake I've send the previous message to you only. I'm sorry! I'm
sending it again to everyone...

Yes, and using that instructions I was able to send v3 traps using
sendtrap tool, as I've described in my original email. The same snmpcmd
like parameters for trapsess I suppose should tell the agent to generate
the same kind of traps but for some reason it seams that they are
rejected by the trap receiver.

Then find out why! :-)

E.g. run snmptrapd with "-DALL", capture packets using Ethereal and
compare etc. ...

Does it not receive them at all, or does it receive
them but refuse to process them? Try running

snmptrapd -f -Le -d

Do you see the incoming notifications?

How have you configured snmptrapd?
In particular, how have you set up the user "myuser" ?

OK - logged as a bug in snmpconf.

RE: Bad engine ID value after -e flag

2006-03-03 Thread Eugen
Hi Dave,

First of all please accept my excuses for the fact that you have
responded so promptly to my email and on my side I've put so much time
to follow your instructions :-(

Actually by trying to respond to your questions I found the problem. The
traps were rejected by snmptrapd with the following error:
usm: Remote boot counter invalid

So I've recreated the user "myuser" with:
net-nmp-config --create-snmpv3-user -a "xxx" -x "yyy" -X DES -A MD5
myuser

the persistent snmpd.conf and the share snmpd.conf were thus updated and
the traps are successfully intercepted by the trap receiver.

And it works fine with the snmpv3 informs as well :-)

Thank you so much!
Eugen
