The snmpd.conf(5) and snmpd.examples(5) manual pages talk about this at
length.

What I mean in this question was, I want to monitor free radius
server through NET-SNMP, so if I kill free radius server

1) How SNMP agent detects it
2) Is there any mechanism for detecting it and sending trap
signal to Manager?

Why am asking this specific question is, I had configured snmpd.conf for
Monitoring free radiusd daemon (while configuring snmpd.conf using
snmpconf command it asks question like do you want to monitor any
process.)

AFAICS, it fails to set the receive timeout for the socket. I'd tend to
ignore that unless you see a real problem functionality-wise.

You'd need to ask the freeradius people about their integration with
net-snmp and the shutdown behaviour of their server.

But note that FreeRadius uses the (obsolete) SMUX protocol, which
doesn't include support for subagent-initiated notifications. If the
radius server is to issue a shutdown trap, then it would need to
handle generating and sending this completely internally. The
Net-SNMP agent would not be involved.

This contrasts with the newer AgentX extension protocol, which *does*
support subagent-generated notifications, where the Net-SNMP agent
*would* accept and forward any such shutdown trap.

I did changes according to this patch, now snmpd is detecting
freeradius server.

Output of snmpd.log is as below

[smux_accept] accepted fd 10 from 127.0.0.1:53562
accepted smux peer: oid SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.3317.1.3.1, descr
radiusd
smux_accept: setsockopt SO_RCVTIMEO: Option not supported by protocol

1) I dint understand what is > Option not supported by protocol

* So now if I kill free radius server it shows as below in snmpd.log

peer disconnected: SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.3317.1.3.1

what I want to check is if I kill radius server is it sends trap to SNMP
manager if am correct or how it reacts(agent).

Please suggest on this regard & is there any NET_SNMP specific manager
to download.

Thanks

Ravi

RE: Regarding Configuration of snmp agent

2006-09-19 Thread Ravi S M

Hi Thomas

I compiled and installed the NET-SNMP (5.3.1). when I run the command

/usr/local/sbin/snmpd -f -L

Am getting the following error message

/usr/local/share/snmp/snmpd.conf: line 49: Error: bad security
level (noauthnopriv, authnopriv, authpriv)
net-snmp: 1 error(s) in config file(s)
[init_smux] bind failed: Permission denied
Error opening specified endpoint "udp:161"
Server Exiting with code 1

My snmpd.conf access control section looks like this.

###
# SECTION: Access Control Setup
#
# This section defines who is allowed to talk to your running
# snmp agent.

# rwuser: a SNMPv3 read-write user
# arguments: user [noauth|auth|priv] [restriction_oid]

rwuser  ravis  1.3.6.1.4.1.3317.1.3.1 <---*->this place
gives
problem

# rouser: a SNMPv3 read-only user
# arguments: user [noauth|auth|priv] [restriction_oid]

rouser kshitij auth 1.3.6.1.4.1.3317.1.3.1

I guess I have done some messup in configuring snmpd.conf

Please let me know reason beyond this. I am struggling since from past
couple of days . no snmpd is running in the system.

Ravi

What exactly did you try and what exact error messages did you get?
In a nutshell here's what you should do:

1) Download the source (net-snmp-5.3.1.tar.gz) from
http://www.net-snmp.org/download

2) Unpack the sources:
   gzip -dc net-snmp-5.3.1.tar.gz | tar xvf -

   cd net-snmp-5.3.1
   ./configure ...

Please make sure that you "./configure --with-mib-modules=smux" (like in
the example you gave).

What exactly did you try and what exact error messages did you get?
In a nutshell here's what you should do:

1) Download the source (net-snmp-5.3.1.tar.gz) from
http://www.net-snmp.org/download

2) Unpack the sources:
   gzip -dc net-snmp-5.3.1.tar.gz | tar xvf -

3) Build and install it (see the file INSTALL):
   cd net-snmp-5.3.1
   ./configure ...
   make
   make test
   su
   make install

That is an extremely old release (March 2004), and is not even the
most recent version on the 5.1.x line (which is no longer being
maintained), We would strongly suggest that you use something a
little less ancient. The latest release is v5.3.1 - available from
the project website.
