There is no standard API for retrieving the actual value.
This will depend on the system that you are trying to monitor
(and the O/S that you are working with).

The Net-SNMP agent provides a framework for accepting and
processing incoming requests - but at the end of the day, it's
up to the MIB module developer to integrate this with the
underlying subsystem.  That's the one bit that can't be handled
automatically.   Each MIB is different - and often each O/S is
different too.
   That's why the 'agent/mibgroup' subtree contains such a
convoluted collection of #ifdef code and alternative versions
of the same basic routines.
