Main Gallery

Personal Effects is a sprawling exhibition presenting the idiosyncratic, street
art based collection of photographer Eric Wolfe, and featuring works by more
than
65 international artists including SWOON, Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Faile, Bast,
Kara
Walker, Brian Eno, Claes Oldenburg and Anna Gaskell.

In 2004, Wolfe purchased a wheatpaste graphic mounted on wood from a high school
student known as Gaia. In the following years, his collection grew rapidly,
with
works being purchased from galleries, at auction, or directly from the artists,
sometimes using trade or barter. Many of the artists Wolfe became interested in
were in the early stages of their gallery careers or were still relatively
unknown
outside of a small community.

Wolfe's collecting impulses connect with his ongoing need to collect and
preserve
bits of ephemera from his own life as well as the detritus of strangers. Aligned
with the burgeoning market for street art, Wolfe's modus operandi has led to
the
creation of a collection that eventually no longer fit under one roof. As the
years
passed, Wolfe's taste and purchases have evolved along with changes in his own
life
- a reflection of the deeply personal nature of this collection. While street
art
remains at its heart, other forms of contemporary art are well represented and
thematic
groupings crossing all genres and eras have developed, such as works inclusive
of
the F-word, rabbit imagery and a significant collection of Peter Norton
Christmas
gifts. A variety of mediums are also represented, including stencil, collage,
painting,
papercut, spray paint, screen printing and sculpture.

>From Bushwick to Bristol and beyond, Personal Effects brings together Wolfe's
>collection
of over 100 pieces of artwork on simultaneous display for the first time.

"Like a mad scientist or surgeon, I have constructed disjointed protruding bones
(re-imagining the internal skeleton of a piece of furniture) and have
obsessively
attempted to repair used kitchen towels by stitching every piece back together

Not content with trying to repair such mundane every day objects, I've also
attempted
to create 'scabs' for old wooden floors, plugging up the gouges that decades of
use have wrought."

[NetBehaviour] N.K. Berlin: GHÉDALIA TAZARTÈS//CHRIS CORSANO & DENNIS TYFUS//DRACULA LEWIS

2011-09-02 Thread Manuela Benetton
PAN presents:

*N.K. Berlin - Tuesday, September 13**th** 2011*
Doors 21.00 – Concert 22.00 sharp!

*GHÉDALIA TAZARTÈS//CHRIS CORSANO & DENNIS TYFUS//DRACULA LEWIS*

*Ghédalia Tazartès*
French cult artist Ghédalia Tazartès is an uncompromising character who
defies categorization. He recorded alone a dozen of albums, calling his way
of working “Impromuz” for lack of a better term. His public appearances
remain exceptional events. Ghédalia Tazartès’ music has always been a
mystery. It switches from musique concrète to – existing or invented –
ethnic music, from poetry to noise, or from loops and collages to sad and
extremely beautiful tunes in a second, but it constantly is in flux and
coherent.

For this event he will do an exclusive performance of the “HAXAN” SOUNDTRACK
(cinemix). Häxan is a documentary about the history of witchcraft, told in a
variety of styles, from illustrated slideshow to dramatized events of
alleged real-life events, right up to the early twentieth century (when the
film was made, in 1922). Benjamin Christensen’s legendary film uses a series
of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches
of the Middle Ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-century
psychiatric patients.
Tazartes’ shamanic voice and talent for incantation make for a unique and
frightening experience.

*Chris Corsano & Dennis Tyfus*
First spellbound by free improvised music in the mid '90s after witnessing
performances by TEST, William Parker, Cecil Taylor and others, Corsano began
a long-standing high-energy partnership with Paul Flaherty in 1998. A move
from western Massachusetts, USA to the UK in 2005 led Corsano to develop an
expanded solo percussion music of his own, incorporating sax reeds, violin
strings and bows, pot lids, adhesive tape and other household devices into
his drum kit. Moving back to the U.S. in 2009, he's returned to his own
projects, most notably a duo with Michael Flower, Rangda (with Sir Richard
Bishop and Ben Chasny) and his solo work, now revamped to include
synthesizers and contact mics in addition to his drum kit and home-made
acoustic instruments. He's also worked with, among others: Evan Parker &
John Edwards, Jim O'Rourke, Paul Dunmall, Nels Cline, Jessica Rylan, Jandek,
Sunburned Hand Of Man, MV&EE, Vampire Belt, Joe McPhee and Thurston Moore &
Wally Shoup.

At this event, Corsano pairs with another many-tendrilled talent in the form
of Belgian maverick Dennis Tyfus. The visual artist, free noise purveyor and
Ultra Eczema label boss Tyfus has his own unique approach to, well,
everything.

*Dracula Lewis*
Dark, lo-fi aggressive electronics with weird field recordings but also a
spacey melodic sound that came up from this maelström. Dracula Lewis is one
of the best hidden secrets from Europe. He has spent a long time traveling
all over the world and has also released records on No Fun Production (split
w/ Ducktails) and his own Hundebiss Records.
