Problem with font cache, NetSurf and Sargasso
I don't often use James Bursa's Sargasso, so have only just discovered this issue which seems to affect versions of NetSurf sometime after r7402 (06 May 2009 00:15). Sargasso and Netsurf appear to produce incompatible RUfl_cache files. No matter which app first produces the cache file, when the other one is run it creates a new cache file, which can be tedious and time consuming. I don't think it's a problem with a particular font, since it happens even when I have removed all fonts apart from ROM fonts and NetSurf's NSSymbol. NetSurf 2.1 exhibits this behaviour whilst version 2.0 does not. Development version r7431 (07 May 2009 18:45) is affected but r7402 (06 May 2009 00:15) isn't. Has anyone else experienced this? !!BEWARE!! Using Alt-Break to try to interrupt font scanning when starting Sargasso has twice caused a broken SysLog.Logs directory here. I'm using RISC OS 5.14. I have no recollection of putting it there, though that's far from a guarantee that I didn't. I wonder if there's another way it could have been put there. Also, what is the best way to remove it. Manual removal seems to upset RUfl and NetSurf fails to load. Evan.

It did seem strange to me, even with only a superficial understanding of the workings of the font manager. To be absolutely clear about what is happening, here are screen shots of the font submenu for Vera, created from OvationPro, with and without NetSurf running: http://www.ejclark.force9.co.uk/temp/NetSurf_font_menus/font_submenu_without_NetSurf.jpg> http://www.ejclark.force9.co.uk/temp/NetSurf_font_menus/font_submenu_with_NetSurf.jpg> Evan.
New Font Handling Seems to Ignore Messages1 Files
Recent builds since the improved support for the non-Unicode font manager seem to be upsetting the generation of font menus. Font menus generated within any other application while NetSurf is running seem to ignore any default weights set using the * character in Message1 files. After quitting NetSurf, font menus are generated as expected. I'm using RISC OS 5.14 (22 Apr 2009), Font Manager 3.61 (06 Jun 2008). Evan.

Similarly with NetSurf 2.0 (Dev) (07 Mar 2008 19:00) r3897. Fetching the page with curl, it's absurdly large, around 900kB. Chopping bits off the end to progressively reduce its size, NetSurf eventually displays it when down to about 250kB. (Oregano2 succeeds before that.) Evan.

After more investigation, if Netsurf is quit while TapirMail is still trying to fetch, TapirMail throws up an error message 'Bad file descriptor'. Cancelling the error causes Tapirmail to disconnect. I've reported this to the author. Evan.
