As I mentioned, I am not a programmers, however, I can do testing nad maybe I can bring you some ideas or think of solutions (in terms of drawing GUI mockup and more detailed features list/description). So just an idea for the begining... Canonical is developing ufw firewall, which is really very much simplier than iptables (or firehol). So what about contacting their development team and talk about option to ufw become more NM-aware? And proxy problem also - in Gnome I can set up system wide proxy, but it is not working in console when trying to use wget, for instance. Re: location based firewall
Hi, > change if you plug into a different subnet of the same router in the > same administrative domain (or it might not, depending on the model Solution could be to save ALL possible MAC adresses and associate them with that network... > Perhaps the key should be a combination of various parameters, such as > subnet address/prefix length, gateway IP, and gateway MAC. I think we are talking about two things here. First option is that firewall is based on connection UUID. That means, when I use specific connection, firewall rules for that connection are enforced. The other option is to autodetect which network I am using. Something like: I am connected to a router with MAC1, that means I must use firewall setting for that network. For instance, if I am using "Auto eth0" that could be on my home network or in cybercafe - and I can use two diferent firewall scripts. Which means there is another possibility - user should have an option that NetworkManager automatically invokes firewall script based on predefined rules OR asks user which firewall script should invoke (and proposes the best one). Some paranoid setup should be like that... I have very restrictive default firewall, but when I connect to my home network, NM detects MAC address, router IP, etc. and then asks me whether I want to run firewall script 2 or not (but I can disable this question and firewall script 2 is automatically run). What about arp -a or nmap gateway IP? > The UUID goes a long way towards helping with this, but there are > fundamentally two approaches: either we have some sort of NM plugin > manipulate the firewall, or we have the firewall listen to NM... either > are doable. The second approach requires modification of a firewall: firewall must be "NetworkManager aware". That could be a problem, because NM and firewall development should be coordinated in some way (maybe harmonised is a better word). The first approach could be more useful, because it will allow users to use different firewall applications... location based firewall
Hi, > I have that setup. I solved it with scripts in > /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/. ... > you find UUIDs on command line with "nmcli con". That is very nice and opens possibilities for developing location based firewalls. For instance, when I am at home, I want to have my samba share open, but when I am on wireless connection, I want to have everything closed. As far as I know Windows 7 has some similar location based firewall. Are there any plans to create GUI for that? I have read old posts, and there were some discussions about per-connection bandwith settings. That would be also useful, but much more useful would be option to have firewll integrated into NM (for instance ufw). It would be great that Network Manager became complete network management center... Re: autoconnect VPN?
Hi, > Sorry the off-topic: how did you managed to make your connection to > work? Are using certificates or username/passwords? I am connecting into my private OpenVPN server and I am using certificates. I just used NetworkManager OpenVPN "wizard" to set up everything. Connection works fine, I just have to click to VPN Connections and select my connection. However, when I go to my connection settings and mark (select) "Connect automatically", nothing changes. I mean, when I connect to a network, my OpenVPN connection is not autostarted (I have to connect to my OpenVPN server manually). When I select "Connect automatically" for some wired or wireless connection, this setting works fine. BTW: there is also one interesting problem here regarding something I call it contextual networking. For instance - I have VPN, but I want to use it only in some contexts (cases). For instance: I am using several networks, my home wired network, my home wireless network, my office wireless network, wireless networks at cybercaffes, etc. However, I would like to use "VPN connection 1" only when I am using wireless networks at cybercaffes and "VPN connection 2" when I use "Wired connection 3". Re: Network Monitor
Hi, > That 3G provider is missing the boat, business wise. Good ISPs > monitor your limit for you, > "Infinity Web" that gives me 4GiB of traffic per mount. After the user > pass this limit, the connection drops to 100Kbps. And the swear that the Actually, in my countries they have several strategies: one is to require additional fee for a traffic which goes over the limit. Another is to limit the connection speed. And the fun begins when you are abroad (in other countries). Too much traffic could be very, very expensive. I completely agree, this is bad business behaviour. But the fact is they are doing this and you can not do anything about it. In some cases it is also not possible to change the provider, because they all are doing the same. So the best practical solution is to have network trafic monitor inside NM. Not only for 3G, also for other types of connections. In could be very useful to know how much traffic did you have on mobile conection 1, 2, etc., wired connection at home, in the office, how much went it through VPN, etc. Also some other data could be useful to have. For instance how much time I have been using one connection and the other. And maybe also time and traffic "profile" (when I was online / transferring data) - please see attached mockup picture. It could also be done that would be able to select/deselect connections with clicking to the legend, and the data on the graph would then cnahge respectively... Sorry, I don't want to burden you too much, I am just givin some ideas. I understand this requires a database, and that is not so simple to do. But I think features like that give NM and Linux in general exactly that "marketing advantage" it needs. However, thank you very much for information about OpenVPN and http_proxy. It is great to hear it is already done (I hope Ubuntu is going to push never version of NM in repositories soon). Network Monitor and http-proxy for OpenVPN
Hi, I am using 3G mobile connection, and have limited traffic. Traffic over some treshold (for instance 1 Gb a month) is very very expensive. Which means there would be great to have some network traffic monitor for a specific connection. Something like: http://netramon.sourceforge.net/eng/help.html Idea is to have per-connection traffic monitor, which could be enabled or disabled. When enabled, it would measure amount of traffic for a specific time interval. When limit will be approaching, it would start notifying user about the limit. When limit is reached, it would disconnect connection. And there is another thing. I am using OpenVPN connection in a proyxed network. To came out of a network, I have to use http-proxy setting in OpenVPN client. Unfortunately NetworkManager does not support http-proxy yet: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-openvpn/+bug/117991 However, there has been patch written which does the job, but for unknown reason, it is not implemented in official NM version: https://launchpad.net/~nail-nodomain/+archive/ppa Could developers comment on this please? three privacy questions
Hi, I am new on the list, and I subscribed, because I have three questions. First is about VPN's. In VPN settings there is an option to automatically connect to VPN. However, this is not working, I have to connect to VPN manually, after I am connected to the internet. Second is about secure and insecure networks. It would be fine to have a special "security" option for all networks. If user marks network as secure, nothing really happens after s/he connects to that network. But if user marks network as not secure (or - does not mark it as secure), then immediatelly after computer is connected to the internet, VPN connection is established. If VPN connection cannot be established access to internet is blocked, and user warned about security. However, user should have an option to manually confirm s/he wants to use insecure network, but that would not be done automatically. The same should happen when VPN connection drops. Now I am using VPN connection on a public WiFi and if VPN drops, there is fallback to insecure open Wifi. If I do not notice that, I am using insecure network, which is really bad... Third is about anonymity. You probably know Tor project: http://www.torproject.org/. Tor is an anonimisation software, some kind of powerful network proxy. In order to be really anonymous, user must have appropriate netwokr settings. H. D. Moore developed interesting application (here: http://www.metasploit.com/data/decloak/) to test the true anonymity of the user. The problem is, that different applications use different network settings so it is possible to reveal true IP address of the user. So, would be possible to add anoymity feature in Network Manager. Sometnihg like "I want to use internet anoymously" switch, which will set all user's TCP connections to Tor network?
