Do you understand that you are using a distro provided package and
that your distro might have patched NM to do that even if the stock NM
doesn't do it?

Again, I am NOT using NetworkManager to set any static IPs. I disable
it before I set any static IPs so there is no reason for it to be using
them. But it is getting them somewhere and thinking that they are
correct. Let me ask you this: If 0.6.x doesn't support static IPs then
WHY IS IT SETTING THEM? Makes no sense to me. It should be using DHCP.
Is there a cache somewhere of settings? Only thing I can think of is
that I left the static ips set one time that I re-enabled NetworkManager
and it picked them up.

2007-11-08 Thread Xamindar
Ok, I understand this when it applies to wireless. But as I have said
in my post I am talking about my wired connection. With wireless, yes,
it makes sense. But with a wired connection that IS NOT dropping then I
would expect NetworkManager to stay connected to it. I sometimes leave
my laptop on at home and connected to the wired connection. Then at
work I attempt to ssh into it only to find that it is "down". This is
the reason I posted on here as it looks to be a serious bug. Now in all
honesty it has stayed connected today for at least three hours so this
is good. One possibility is that my wired connection becomes congested
and very slow sometimes, but that shouldn't matter because it is still UP.

Interaction with static IPs isn't really supported with 0.6.x well; NM
is supposed to flush the addresses on the interface when it brings the
connection up. It may be that your distro has implemented a backend
that tells NM to pull static IP settings from other distro config bits
(/etc/interfaces, /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* for example).
In that case, NM will use the static IP specified for that interface.
With 0.6.x, either you use static IP for the interface _all_ the time,
or you use DHCP all the time. 0.6.x and earlier weren't really
targetted at the static IP use-case. But 0.7 made good static IP
support an explicit goal and it'll be a lot better there.

If the connection to the AP gets dropped, NM will connect to the last AP
you connected to that it can see because it attempts to preserve
connectivity. If you don't want to connect to that other network,
remove it from the saved networks list. If NM switched away from the
connection it had when you saw it, then something caused the wireless
card and driver to drop the connection to the AP, and NM was not able to
reconnect to that AP again in enough time. If your AP crashes or
reboots, for example, it might take a while to do so, during which it
can't be connected to. For example, sometimes my WRT54G crashes, and
after a reboot, the ipw2200 driver is stuck in a state where it won't
connect to the AP, requiring a module unload/reload before it can
connect again, _even_ without NetworkManager at all.

It continues to happen. This time I found that my wired interface was
now down and my wireless interface was connected (to the neighbor) but I
never made this change at all. What is the deal here? This is very
annoying! Why is NetworkManager randomly switching interfaces and
randomly changing my IP? This is seriously annoying. I know it is
NetworkManager because I can stop it and start my normal net service and
my wired connection will stay connected. While NetworkManager is
enabled I have checked and any network interface services or plugdev
service is stopped. So I guess for now I have to leave NetworkManager
disabled and use the old school setup until this is fixed within
NetworkManager.

Ok, I fixed that with no change.

Talking wired here. Probably does it with the wireless as well but
lately I haven't used wifi that much. At this moment I am connected to
another wireless network and it works fine. But if I switch it back to
my wired home network (and the cable IS plugged in) it sets the stupid
static IP from work. I know I NEVER tried to use networkmanager with
work, I never set this IP in it. Why the heck is it using it? This bug
makes no sense at all.

My gentoo network script are also set correctly.

config_eth0=( "dhcp" )

That's all it has for this interface.

Actually, looking closer, it looks likt NM sometimes sets it back to my
work IP. There isn't even a place to set a static IP for my wired
interface in NM so this makes no sense.

Hmm, for some reason I had two "RC_PLUG_SERVICES="" sections in there.
I removed one of them and set it to RC_PLUG_SERVICES="!net.*"
I hope that helps.

WLAN devices store the last IP address. Indeed, NM is supposed to
overwrite it when you select your home AP.

This is why I think it may be a Gentoo problem -- RC service plugging
may be undoing what NM's setting.

NM looses connection and/or doesn't use dhcp

2007-11-01 Thread Xamindar
I have started to have some problems with networkmanager lately. I am
running version 0.6.5_p20070823.

First thing: when I come home from work where I was connected using a
static IP (at work I stop NM, set the static IP, then on reboot the PC
goes back to it's dhcp settings) for some odd reason NM keeps setting my
work IP and doesn't renew the IP for my home network. This is a recent
occurrence and I can't figure out why it started doing it.

Secondly, at random times I will loose my connection. The IP is still
there but I think NM messes up the default route info. Restarting NM
fixes it or simply setting the default route manually does it. Why is
it doing this?
