I can see the access tech changing a lot umts->gprs->unknown->umts... is
there good coverage? if there is an antenna, is it connected?

If you test this same exact setup with MM 0.6.x it ends up registered?

Wait, you didn't compile ModemManager with MBIM support, did you? MM is
explicitly ignoring the MBIM ports, and that can only happen if it
wasn't compiled with libmbim-glib support. You can get libmbim here:

http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/libmbim/

Sigh... I wonder if we should just fully skip PH_SIM always.

You can compile ModemManager with --without-mbim; or, as Bjørn suggested
load the 'cdc_ncm' kernel driver with 'prefer_mbim=N'.

Anyway, when using MBIM, ModemManager will not request the network
interface details to be set with DHCP; instead it will explicitly expose
in the bearer interface which IP details to use (and NM will read them
and apply them in the interface, if using NM).

If I'd remove mbim support from the kernel, would ModemManager use the
cdc_acm data port?

It's unclear to me whether you've tested this with a MBIM capable
ModemManager. You might want to load cdc_ncm with the 'prefer_mbim=N'
option until you are ready to use MBIM on this modem.

> /bin/usb-devices: line 79: printf: 08: invalid octal number

Yes, and the usb-devices script is unfortunately a bad substitute for
/proc/.../usb/devices. Not only does it barf on these interface
numbers, but more importantly: It hides all inactive alternate interface
settings and configurations. In this case I know that there are NCM
alternate settings here, but that kind of information is usually
crucial. The script is so incomplete that it is close to useless IMHO.

It's much better to mount debugfs on /sys/kernel/debug and use
/sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices. If you cannot do that, then use
"lsusb -vd".
