I tried rmmod/modprobe.  That seems to fix it.  I also see that there is a
new kernel message, that wasn't present when the module was first loaded:

sudo /sbin/iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

ls /sys/class/net
