Is NetworkManager and nm-applet running?
We would need some logs to see if there's a problem with NM (/var/log/syslog,
~/.xsession-errors).
However, it looks like you have issues with Ubuntu (Unity) icon stuff, and you
can get better help in a Ubuntu forum. Or file a bug againt Ubuntu.
