You must have dosemu installed I think - not sure of that but I do. Then you
mount the desired partition (on the same machine in my case) with:

 mount -t vfat /dev/hd#$ /FolderName

 where # = HD letter as a-1, b-2 etc., $ = partition number as 1-first
partition, 2-second partition etc. and FolderName is the folder you wish to
mount the partition under. Then xfm will "see" the partition you have mounted.

Re: [newbie] Monitor resolution settings

1999-11-25 Thread Gregg Carrier

Run XF86config. Lets you set the resolution with several options. For
example, selecting 543 should have it try to run at 1024 X 768 first and go
down in resolution if necessary. You can also st it so it won't make the
screen so large you have to scroll off the edges. You should know your
monitor verticle and horizontal refresh rates and the capabilities of your
video card if it isn't listed on the list before running the program.

Excuse me, but what is "st it"? I want my screen not so large I have to
scroll around. How can I make my K desktop fit on my screen? Also, if Web
Pages are being rendered in a tiny unreadable font, is it a problem with X,
fonts, or what? TIA...

RE: [newbie] Retriving files in windoze via Linux

1999-11-25 Thread Daniel

You should try to edit /etc/fstab and put your windows partition. Mine is hda1 for C:,
and hda5 for the second partition, which is D: for DOS.

Here is the two lines I append to /etc/fstab :

/dev/hda1 /mnt/DOS_hda1 vfat user,exec,rw,conv=auto 0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/DOS_hda5 vfat user,exec,rw,conv=auto 0 0

If it doesn't work, you can try a more simple syntax :

/dev/hda1 /mnt/DOS_hda1 auto 0 0 0

Don't forget to create /mnt/DOS_hda1...

1999-11-25 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Ever heard of that story "The Frog and The Scorpion"? In short, M$ will not change
its ways. Letting them in this camp is like
inviting a scorpion into your sleeping bag.

In case you hadn't heard, I'll bore you.. in brief:
On day a scorpion had to cross a river. Since it couldn't swim, it needed help. Then
comes a frog. The scorpion begs the frog.
The frog says it doesn't trust the scorpion because the frog might get stung. The
scorpion promised and promised and finally the
frog agrees. Half way across, the frog is overwhelmed by searing pain. As they both
begin to drown, the frog asked why the
scorpion stung him. The scorpion replied, "it's because I'm a scorpion."

I'm sure all of you have heard similar stories.

Re: [newbie] modem configuration problem

1999-11-25 Thread M Thompson

Are you also running Windows on this machine? What COM port is Windows
using for the modem? (Even if you don't run Windows, try the following four
options first)

In KPPP, setup the modem according to the following:
COM1 = /dev/ttyS0
COM2 = /dev/ttyS1
COM3 = /dev/ttyS2
COM4 = /dev/ttyS3

Next, run the "query modem" option from within KPPP and see if KPPP is able
to talk to your modem using an of the four devices listed above. If KPPP is
able to query your modem, then go ahead and dialing your ISP with KPPP.

Let us know if this worked and also wheather you use any console
applications that make use of the modem.

For the sound, run the following from the command line (login as root):
sndconfig

[newbie] How to use Iomega Zip drive?

Hi,

Sorry if this question gets posted twice, but the mail I sent yesterday
seems to have fallen into a bit bucket...

I have Linux-Mandrake 6.1, and I want to use my parallel-port Zip
drive. The L-M hardware list says that the Zip drive is supported. My
question is, how do I access it?

I know the parallel port works fine (because my printer works fine), but
I can't figure out the magic to talk to the Zip drive. I just want to
move files to from it, just like any other disk. If it's as simple as
my mounting the drive, can someone tell me what the mount device is?

Thanks in advance,

[newbie] Anybody got this modem working?

1999-11-25 Thread JMJ

Greetings...

Using a fresh install of "Complete Linux OS 6.5" (The Macmillan
version of Mandrake 6.1) and I can't get my modem working.

The hardware is a Dell I7K and a 3Com/Megahertz 3CCM156
PCMCIA modem. I'm not sure whether to start checking the
PCMCIA stuff, or keep fiddling with the modem settings. So far,
I've had no luck trying various options in KPPP, which makes me
wonder if there's a PCMCIA problem.

This card is listed at
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
as "?" and the 3CCM156B is listed as "OK"

So, before I waste time trying to get the modem working... has
anyone gotten this card working under Linux??

Thanks for any help or pointers!!

Davidbecause you still have at least one open file in the mounted

this my first time to recompile a kernel with EXTRAVERSION, but not my first

linux, learn our own systems and have fun. perhaps there are some
traps I missed.

make deps ran ok, as did make modules and make modules_install

when I first reboot I got an error --
modprobe: insmod: :329: parsing error in dependency file

and the machine hung at checking module dependencies. ctrl c kept it booting,
but the modules aren't loading, (support for vfat, parport, etc.)

so I ran depmod -a and moved the /usr/src/module file (renamed it, actually).

and reboot with the same result.

so, I recompiled, ran depmod -a again and reboot.

this time it didn't hang, but

[newbie] postfix email configurations help needed

1999-11-25 Thread bob

Hello fellow penguins:

I've recentely switched from redhat to mandrake and i can no longer
recieve email on my computer. When i use my isp's mail system to mail
my box, I recieve an error that says

When I used RedHat, All i needed to do was add an entry in
/etc/sendmail.cf, ie..
Cwlinuxnet.yi.org

Now I'm lost. I've got an adsl connection via a dynamic IP address and
use yi.org's dns service so that my current IP is resolved, though it
worked before.

Does anybody know what I need to do to be able to recieve mail on my
box?

I know my isp doesn't block my mail port, so i'm certain it's a
configuration issue.

I've even tried defining myhostname and mydomainname variable in
/etc/postfix/main.cf
needless to it hasn't worked.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Re: [newbie] 900 MB too small partition?

1999-11-25 Thread drx

Since I am totally ignorant of everything in the Linux world, I tend
to believe what I read and what people who have experience of Linux tell
me. In one guide for Linux newbies it is recommended that an 80 MB root
partition is quite sufficient, and people have told me that Linux programs
take up extremely little space and RAM. This led me to believe that 900 MB
would be sufficient -- especially since I didn't believe that a 650 MB CD
could install more than, at most, 650 MB of software. Now that you have
explained it I feel pretty foolish for not realizing that the installation
files were compressed. Your recommendation that I swap partitions makes
sense, but since I don't have anything at all on the hard disk as yet, I
might as well repartition it instead. Perhaps it would be better to make a
special /usr partition as well? I'll follow Brett Jones's advice and NOT
install everything. I won't run a news group or an YP server. In fact, I
don't know what I'll use Linux for -- I just want to learn more about it
first. Then eventually it may become clearer to me what I'll mainly use it
for.

The reason I made a rather large /home partition was because I figured
that if I happened to get a lot of things I wanted to keep I could have
those things in this partition even if I eventually would upgrade Linux by
making a completely new installation in the root (and /usr?) partition. Of
course 2 GB is a bit of overkill, and it'll take me several years to fill
that, but, as I said, I didn't realize that linux itself required that much
space. How would you recommend that I partition the hard disk to get the
most out of it? Does for instance this seem reasonable:

 / 300 MB
 /usr 1500 MB
 /home1500 MB

(and about 1000 MB for Solaris)

By the way, thanks Brett for wishing me luck with the Solaris
installation. I know that it's a hassle to install it, and it's a pretty
godawful system as well in many ways, but I have to install it since I am
taking a course in Solaris and I need to practice at home. I only hope it
won't be too difficult to double boot with Linux on the same hard disk. At
least I am keeping that disk Micro$oft free (although I do prefer IE over
Netscape -- a Linux version of IE sounds interesting).

Thanks for your help.

DRX

drxthe initial installation puts virtually nothing in a /home
partition. So you're trying to do an "everything" install with just 900
megabytes of space allocated to store all of the compressed software on
a 600+ megabyte CD. The installation is reporting to you that it needs,
at a minimum, 524 bytes more allocated to the / partition to
successfully complete your "everything" installation. Why don't you
believe this? I recommend that you swap your allocations and give the /
partition the 1900 megabytes and the /home partition the 900 megabytes.
That will work and leave a little space for expansion in the /
partition.

Alan

Yes! It's of immensely more importance to get Mozilla stable.
Unfortunately, old habits die hard and people want to stick with
software they've used before. I have a feeling that THAT (or quite
possibly, people just want to troll the mailing list for reactions) is
the reason for the IE postings.

You could have a point there, and now I have reacted. I don't join a
mailinglist concerning Linux to get updates on the possibility of porting an MS
app to Linux.

Another thing about IE, is that a Swedish computer magazine (PC+) made a survey
of what browsers were most used. Of cuorse, IE won the race, but it doesn't
really mean a thing. I mean, that if someone gave you a pre installed machine
with window maker for example and you don't know about alternatives, then why
should you use for example KDE or Gnome insteas. May it be that KDE or Gnome ar
far superior to Windowmaker when it comes to usability for Linux starters.
Hope you get my point here. Think I lost it somewhere..

I believe that GPL says something that you must distribute the source code

The Linux kernel and many if not most of the programs that come with a

keep the source code closed. I welcome MS to try and make their own *nix

need to do if they want to make something good.

Personally, my preferences are like follows:
Netscape as a web browser (also use KFM) and an operating system that allows ME
to make the desitions of how to run and what to do whitout having to pay major
$ to a company.
There might be a possibility that IE could get ported to Linux (shouldn't be to
har using existing Unix source), but MS is as I percieve in war with us (users
of alternative operating systems especially Linux). No one has officially
pronounced war, but M$ is putting quite a bit of mony to the task to make Linux
look like an inferior operating system. They even have devoted serverspace on
their own servers to this task.

[newbie] /home install -- Success!

1999-11-25 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

First, my thanks to everyone who went out of their way to help me with
all the little questions having to do with installing a /home partition,
including questions about swap partitions, etc. Everything went fine as
you can see below:
[sher@adsl-77-232-173 sher]$ df
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 2.6G 1.4G 1.1G 56% /
/dev/hda3 1.2G 330M 793M 29% /home
/dev/hdb1 2.9G 422M 2.3G 15% /bs
[sher@adsl-77-232-173 sher]$

One question: I updated my Mandrake 6.1 CD using MandrakeUpdate.
Everything went more or less smoothly (you need to add "kdesu -c" to the
Properties. Execute of MandrakeUpdate to make it work as root, thus
"kdesu -c MandrakeUpdate" without the quotes). This included updating my
kernel (all 8 files along with "initscripts" (I think that's the name of
the file). Well, as you can see below, my new kernel is indeed
2.2.13-22mkd, and I made a bootdisk with that new number after
installation (and updated my /etc/lilo and /sbin/lilo) and everything
works fine. But the first entry for the kernel includes BOTH kernel
numbers, the original one and the updated one.

Can anyone explain this?

Thanks again to everyone.

Benjamin

[sher@adsl-77-232-173 sher]$ rpm -q kernel
kernel-2.2.13-7mdk
kernel-2.2.13-22mdk
[sher@adsl-77-232-173 sher]$ rpm -q kernel-headers
kernel-headers-2.2.13-22mdk
[sher@adsl-77-232-173 sher]$ rpm -q kernel-source
kernel-source-2.2.13-22mdk
[sher@adsl-77-232-173 sher]$

Recommendations to Mandrake:

DURING INSTALL:

1) Explain to users what SMP means. By the way, the autodetect insisted
that I had an SMP, when I only have one AMD k6-2 400 Mhrtz processor.

2) Explain to users what all those acronyms in "Which processes or
programs do you want Linux to automatically start?" (such as amd, httpd,
innd, etc. etc.). A newbie is likely to feel that he has just landed on
the moon when seeing these cryptic acronyms without any explanation
and/or advice on whether he/she needs it or not. I do however,
appreciate the tremendous advance over the old RH 5.2 and 6.0, I think,
where none were checked off at all. At least here you can accept the
defaults.

3) Suggest that the user add ALL : ALL to /etc/hosts.deny and ALL: LOCAL
to /etc/hosts.allow or add that tot he final stage of installation to
give the user some basic online security right off.

4) It's about time that sound configuration was included along with
video and printer and everything else. I've reinstalled RH and Mandrake
several times, yet, believe it or not, it took me a while to figure out
after installing RealPlayer and getting no sound that I had clean forgot
to do my sndconfig sound configuration.

5) When updating, you need to choose an FTP site. Fine, I chose
rpmfind.net. But the next time I opened Update, it returned, unless I am
mistaken, right back to the first site on the list, someplace in
Belgium.

6) Why not spare us the Utilities agony (all the more so because it is
such a minor inconvenience) of having to figure out how to view all the
Utilities (by creating an extra Utilities subfolder, then copy and
paste).

7) What do you do if you DON'T want or need to accept certain updates,
e.g. Netscape or the new and defective lpr? How do you keep it from
appearing every time you open Update?

Otherwise, I am very pleased with Mandrake 6.1. Just thought that these
suggestions may help to make Mandrake even more user-friendly.

Thanks so much.

When I check Kmemmon w/ no other apps running I've only got like 2mb's out of
 48 remaining.

I think that's normal... I could be wrong but I think it's just tossing
most of your unused memory into a cache. Run ktop and click on the
"Performance Meter" tab. See where it says "Cache (kB)" ? That will
probably show a large amount of RAM put into your cache, and if you open a
program that needs to use some of that RAM, the size of the cache will
shrink accordingly.

I have 48MB as well, though, so I feel obligated to mention that though
KDE ran adequately for me, it DOES use more RAM than most other window
managers (except Gnome, which is just as bad). I get much better
performance from XFCE and Window Maker which are also simple, graphically
configurable, and easy to get comfortable with IMO.

Any comments? Is there anything i have to set b4, the linux can check fo my

Modem : External Prolink 56K V90bis

software used : kppp

Are you also running Windows on this machine? What COM port is Windows
using for the modem? (Even if you don't run Windows, try the following
four
options first)
In KPPP, setup the modem according to the following:
COM1 = /dev/ttyS0
COM2 = /dev/ttyS1
COM3 = /dev/ttyS2
COM4 = /dev/ttyS3
Next, run the "query modem" option from within KPPP and see if KPPP is able
to talk to your modem using an of the four devices listed above. If KPPP
is
able to query your modem, then go ahead and dialing your ISP with KPPP.

Of course you don't have to add the lines kpanel and kfm -d , I
added
these so that the desktop icon for kde and the kpanel would appear.
These
are my own tastes. The blackbox binary was located in my
/usr/local/bin

OS can
access it ie. /bin . Then just save this to your Xclients file,
remember to
back up the original Xclients file in case something goes wrong. Then
just
run startx from the command line prompt and you will be on you way.
left/right clicking the desktop will pull up the blackbox menu, which
probably needs to be edited to work properly with your system (..very
easy
to do), or the iconify menu.
Have fun, and spread the word. Blackbox is the fastest and easiest to
 modify GUI out there.

I just changed my Xclients file to read:

  #!/bin/bash
  kpanel
  kfm -d
  /usr/local/bin/blackbox

Of course you don't have to add the lines kpanel and kfm -d , I
 added
these so that the desktop icon for kde and the kpanel would appear.
 These
are my own tastes. The blackbox binary was located in my
 /usr/local/bin
file. Make sure that you place the bsetroot bin somewhere where the
 OS can
access it ie.

[newbie] /home install -- Success! -- footnote on sound

1999-11-25 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

A footnote on my request for sound configuration during install.

Just wanted to clarify that when I forgot to configure sound (sndconfig)
and turned on Real Player G2, I did not simply hear nothing. I got an
error message: "Sorry, audio device being used by another program" or
something like that. Then it sent me to RealPlayer's Tech Support for a
lengthy and irrelevant (for us Linux users) explanation why my sound was
not working. Naturally, if you haven't configured your sound during
install (not included yet in RH or Mandrake) and forgot to do so right
afterwards (or if you are a newbie and don't even know that you are
supposed to configure your sound AFTER the full install), then you'll
find yourself completely confused until you suddenly remember to
configure your sound or, in the case of a newbie, until someone tells
him/her what needs to be done.

So, why not include sound configuration as part of the regular
Installation procedure, so that when you are told at the very end
"Congratulations, your installation is successful, welcome to Linux"
(can't remember the exact words), you really have completed your
installation. I can only imagine a newbie installing RealPlayer G2 and
getting the message I got and trying to figure out what in the world is
going on?

Let's help the newbies, who have enough problems as it is, and let's
make Mandrake even more user-friendly by including sound configuration
in the regular Install! It's about time!

Re: [newbie] Using multiple WM's

1999-11-25 Thread Ty C. Mixon

That's exactly what I'm talking about, but I haven't the first clue
how to start up an X server with a specified WM from the cmd line. If
I'm at the cmd line, I just type startx, and a light bulb just went
off . . .

I'd still like input, but I'm gonna go look at startx . . . .

Looking over this older e-mail, I see how I could manually switch my
default WM, but how can I set it so that I can start any WM I want by
  entering the right command.

I'm thinking of something like this -
startx for 'default' (kde in Mandrake)

  AS for AfterStep

  black for blackbox

  etc, ad nausem.

TIA :) And happy T-Day to the Americans. :)

I got that same message and had to take the modem out and look at it
and it was a winModem. I am not sure if it that is your problem or not
but you should start there and rule that out first

Any comments? Is there anything i have to set b4, the linux can check fo my
 modem ?

 Modem : External Prolink 56K V90bis
 Linux : Mandrake 6.0
 software used : kppp

Are you also running Windows on this machine? What COM port is Windows
using for the modem? (Even if you don't run Windows, try the following
 four
 options first)
In KPPP, setup the modem according to the following:
 COM1 = /dev/ttyS0
 COM2 = /dev/ttyS1
 COM3 = /dev/ttyS2
 COM4 = /dev/ttyS3
Next, run the "query modem" option from within KPPP and see if KPPP is able
to talk to your modem using an of the four devices listed above. If KPPP
 is
able to query your modem, then go ahead and dialing your ISP with KPPP.

[newbie] Where is list of rpms?

1999-11-25 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends;

Another suggestion to Mandrake:

It would help immensely if users, especially paying users, had a full
and complete list of all Mandrake rpms, either on the installation CD or
the rpm contrib, in fact, there should be, I believe, a full and
up-to-date list of all rpms, programs, documentation, etc available in a
separate constantly updated brochure.

Strangely enough, I like the simple and short Mandrake User's Guide.
Obviously, it only touches upon basics, and, speaking as a newbie, I
mean real basics, but that's its great advantage. It will not overwhelm
a new user, and that's a plus.

The Prolink has been nothing but trouble since it's first iteration. I
remember one ISP practically giving it away with a paid subscribtion.
I don't know if things have changed much now, but I found out that it
could not be used with NT. SOme knowledgable vendors will warn you
away from them. Get a real modem - like a 3Com :-)

CAn anyone recommend any good simple documentation on connecting to the
 singapore isp
 using Mandrake 6.0 ???

You could try kppp. Most ISP's setup shouldn't differ that much.
Can't say specifically for Cyberway, but I know of friends who have
been able to connect to Singnet and Pacific, with Linux, though I've
read that there was some problem with Magix. All you need would be the
DNS and dialup numbers which should be available from your Wndoxe setup.

Good luck.

Recommend this site:

Things seem to have quiet down a little on the list there but the

the focus seems to be on the I7K, until the I7.5K came along.

I've just joined this list, and I wonder why the h?ck is there so much
debate about getting EI to run on a Linux system ?? Isn't it better to get
Mozilla in working order giving us an alternativ to propriety software ??

Actually, that's a very good point. Think of Red Hat and Mandrake on
both sides of this coin. Red Hat prefers to ship their distribution
defaulting to GNOME. Mandrake ships theirs defaulting to KDE. Is one
superior to the other? In technical ways, probably. In political ways,
probably. Do they both allow you to simply get your work done? Yes.
For that, neither is superior to the other.

However, the interesting question is the one you raise: given the
default desktop, how many people actively seek out other alternatives?
I'd imagine it's probably a small percentage, probably those who've used
other desktops/window managers previously.

Could a Linux distribution survive (or alternately, keep it's customers
happy) concentrating on one desktop? I'm not familiar enough with
Corel's new offering to know whether they ship GNOME, but it could be an
interesting path for them to completely concentrate on a single desktop.

Personally, I'd love for a distribution to do it. Ship a single
desktop. Ship a single set of applications created/molded to that
desktop. Do away with the 15 choices of editors/mp3 players/mail
readers/etc. For sure, it would be a much more compact installation.
It would also be much easier from a quality control aspect since you'd
be dealing with 1/3 to 1/2 the applications. Anyone know of a
distribution currently taking that route?

For the current extremes, you'd have to look at something like Mandrake
which ships a "normal" distribution. For the most part, it's no more or
less like any of the other big distributions (save one, but I'll get to
that). Take a look at the package list and you'll find the same
packages in Mandrake that you'll likely find in Caldera. Contrast that
with SuSE and you'll find that Mandrake is rather conservative in the
things they include. SuSE ships with applications and utilities that I
haven't seen in 6 years of Linux use! Sure, it's nice to have all the
choices, but the installation must seem extremely daunting to a new
user.

Of course, some company had to go and break that rule... That's right,
