It's for command substitution, if you want to fill in stuff in a line: $ echo There's `ls|wc -l` files in this dir. instead of enter and then get brought into a loop I can't get out of. I imagine this is some sort of feature that would allow you to enter extra long command sequences but the enter key does not activate the command, nor can I find anyway to get out of the loop. Try Ctrl-D (to end it) or Ctrl-C (to cancel it). You probably want Ctrl-C, but you'll see the other elsewhere, like when you use mail or other command-line kinda programs.
