Personally I can't wait till this court thing gets settled, Napster is
shut down for good, and this thread dies. Napster is stealing
 plain and
simple. No matter how you slice it. Of course that's if you're being
completely honest with yourself and others. Put yourself in
 the shoes of
the artist whos CD's you're ripping and then sharing with others. THAT
is NOT just music files you're swapping back and forth. That
 is a peice
of someone elses creativity that is COPYRIGHTED material and not for
 FREE distribution.

check out etree.org for some things way cooler than napster but with a much more
limited selection of bands. All live stuff, but a fat connection required...

[newbie] Preparing Machine to Load Linux

2000-07-01 Thread Bill . Gardner

Howdy,
loaded 7.1 up at home, went totally fine and KDE was working nicely for a couple of
days. PII, 350MHZ. 20GB and 4GB internal IDE drives.

Now however when I try to boot into linux, all i get is, "Preparing Machine to Load
Linux" and nothing else happens?

Should I just re-install?

Thanks,

suggestion, Check an' see if you've got 'grub' installed. If
not you can get the rpm at any 7.1 or cooker ftp site. Start
reading 'info grub'. It's pretty straightforward, and you'll soon
learn how to edit and setup it's lilo.conf-type file, 'menu.lst'
You'll be that much ahead when you get 7.1

I chose grub when I installed 7.1. At first I wished I had lilo
back, but after a little reading in 'info grub', I'm glad I've got
grub. It's easy to switch back'n forth. Just have 'lilo.conf'
setup properly, and run '/sbin/lilo'. Conversely, have 'menu.lst'
correct and run '/sbin/grub'. I'm not 100% positive, but I believe
both the new lilo and grub, don't have the huge HDD/1024 cylinder
 qualms.

MACMILLAN USA AND MANDRAKESOFT ANNOUNCE EXCLUSIVE DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT
Retail Market Leader and Linux System Publisher Join Forces

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana--June 8, 2000--Macmillan USA and MandrakeSoft today announced a
strategic, long-term agreement whereby Macmillan will be the exclusive retail
distributor of the English version of the Linux-Mandrake operating system in the
United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, South Africa, Scandinavia (Finland,
Norway, Sweden), Australia and Indonesia.

Macmillan began distributing MandrakeSoft's version of Linux in June 1999. According
to figures supplied by PC Data (http://www.pcdata.com), together Macmillan and
MandrakeSoft have enjoyed steady leadership in the retail Linux market. Since 1999,
they have maintained an average of 30% unit share in retail stores, at one point
capturing an overall 52% unit share. "There is no question, Macmillan's leadership in
retail distribution is obvious," said Daniel Morales, MandrakeSoft's Vice President,
US Operations. "Their presence in retail outlets offered MandrakeSoft a powerful way
to increase Linux-Mandrake market share."

"Our decision to partner with Macmillan was strategic. Macmillan's strong marketing
team provides the key elements needed for MandrakeSoft to maintain its leadership
position in the fast-changing world of Linux," said Morales. "We are very excited
about our long-term partnership agreement."

Macmillan's Linux-Mandrake products address a growing need in the Linux community for
continuously improved ease-of-use and the latest technology updates. "With the Linux
market becoming increasingly crowded, the players that deliver distributions geared
toward truly enhancing end-users' experiences will win," attested Macmillan Software's
Vice President and interim Publisher, Jeff Valler. "Linux-Mandrake is a solid
operating system for both new and high-end users. MandrakeSoft is very successful at
raising the technology bar. Our experience at retail distribution, combined with the
leading technology development from MandrakeSoft, brings great strength to the Linux
marketplace."

Partnership objectives between Macmillan and MandrakeSoft extend beyond the retail
distribution channel. Both companies have a vested interest in the grass-roots nature
of the Linux community, and plan to work closely to brand their partnership. The
enhanced Macmillan/MandrakeSoft relationship will produce collaborative efforts at
trade shows, Linux User Group involvement, and marketing and promotional activities.
"This new relationship between Macmillan and MandrakeSoft only solidifies our mutual
commitment to providing the Linux market with the options they seek, from
award-winning technology to education and market presence," said Valler. "As market
leaders, we will continue to advance the open source movement so that we are all
winners."

MACMILLAN USA ANNOUNCES UPCOMING RELEASE OF LINUX-MANDRAKE 7.1 PRODUCT LINE
Publisher and Distributor Deliver Updated Technology to a Savvy, Linux-Hungry Community

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana--June 8, 2000--Building on their alliance to publish and
distribute the award-winning Linux-Mandrake software, Macmillan USA and MandrakeSoft
will release their latest Linux-based products within weeks. Two specific software
products, Linux-Mandrake 7.1 Complete and Linux-Mandrake 7.1 Deluxe, will be released
in the upcoming month. Linux for Windows 7.1, which incorporates the Linux-Mandrake
operating system, will also be available during the same time-frame.

Linux-Mandrake is a well-known Linux mainstay, most regarded for its
ease-of-use--particularly for both the burgeoning newbie market and the small and
medium-sized businesses. MandrakeSoft and Macmillan are solid forces in the Linux
market, offering three of the top ten retail Linux products. According to PC Data
(www.pcdata.com), Mandrake and leading competitor, Red Hat, currently hold the same
unit share for their top selling Linux titles.

Continuing to raise the technology bar in the development of the Linux desktop
environment, the Linux-Mandrake 7.1 Complete and Deluxe products will provide newbies
(as well as the Linux-savvy) features and tools that promise to take their Linux
experience to a new level.

Major improvements feature enhanced hardware detection and a multi-disc installation
with more applications and utilities included in the core distribution. All available
Helix Code GNOME improvements are incorporated in Macmillan's Linux-Mandrake 7.1
Complete and Deluxe products, as well as enhanced default settings for GNOME KDE
environments. A modified Qt library (foundation of KDE applications, supporting
Chinese, Korean, and Japanese) and a new menu system that updates automatically when
new packages are installed is also included. Several Mandrake-specific tools
available in the 7.1 products make installation and configuration even easier. Some
of these features are:
· DrakX (fully handles multiple-CD installation)
· DrakBootdisk (a new graphical boot-floppy generation tool)
· PrinterDrake (printer configuration which now supports more printer types and
options)

In addition to the significant software upgrades, several new features improve
ease-of-use with regard to hardware requirements. Better power-saving support on
laptop computers, enhanced USB support for modems, printers, and Zip drives, and
improved SMP (symmetrical multi-processing) support will assist Linux enthusiasts
with their hardware functionality. A complete listing of 7.1 features is available on
the Mandrake website www.linux-mandrake.com.

"We are dedicated to bringing the latest Linux technology to the retail market for
MandrakeSoft," commented Jeff Valler, Macmillan Software's Vice President and interim
Publisher. "The Linux community is hungry for updated and improved technolog--they
are not long satisfied with yesterday's software offerings. The Linux-Mandrake OS is
solid, and one that sets the standard for upgrades. We are pleased to be bringing the
latest Linux technology to market this July."

:~Just checking - have I got this right? Macmillan have exclusive
 :~rights?

Exclusive rights to Power Packs and similar. GPL-CD-s ala
 cheapbytes are
just as free as they used to be. OK, maybe i underestimated
 the amount of
negative energy in the word "monopoly", I will have to explain this
 better.

 [disclaimer]
I am writing this out-of-the-head, so maybe some facts are wrong, but
since we actually have a McMillan employee at this list, he
 will correct
me if I got something wrong. .-) I am also in no means
 authorised to write
this, but I hope noone will mind.

 [past]
In the past, US customers were often confused by having to
 choose two very
similar packages with MandrakeLinux inside. The worse of all
 war the gaf
with McMillan-s 6.5 package: If you bought Mandrake 6.1 pack, followed
with McMillans 6.5 "upgrade" you were quite pissed off,
 right? Well, this
is going to change now. On the other hand, McMillan was extremely
successful in selling our distro, which is something we
 really liked, for
 obvious reasons.

 [fact in short]

We have a very good partnership with McMillan, but there were some
problems, so we went and made a new deal with them.

 [new deal]

 1) McMillan has exclusive rights to distribute MandrakeLinux
 in USA and
 other english-speaking countries.
 2) McMillan does not mix in non-english speaking countries
 3) McMillan does not sell any other distros
 4) All "McMillan" packages will clearly state that they have
 "Mandrakesoft" product inside.
 5) Package numbering is the same for McMillan and non-McMillan
 packages.

Probably i forgot something, but these are the most
 interesting points, I
suppose. As you can see, this deal is far from beeing
 one-sided - from my
perspective it sounds like a win-win situation, and if both sides show
good will to solve any future problems in a "fair" way, it
 may end up as
extremely good deal for both sides. Do not think about it as about
"McMillans monopoly", think about it as about "Mandrake has outsorced
sales to a company which has means to push them very hard.",
 and you will
 understand what I think.

:~It will still be confusing to many folks if, like they did
:~with 6.1, MacMillan decides to market 7.1 as 7.5!! Their
:~excuse was that more people will purchase an upgrade sequenced
:~by .5 than would have bought it sequenced if sequenced by only
 :~.1. Sheesh!!

AFAIK this is not allowed by our new contract. And there will
 be only one

...and this was a decision that was met with ease by both parties.

I sense some definite hostility towards Macmillan on this thread. I'd like to

 |You will be able to install using your SCSI CDROM but

 | Subject: [newbie] FAQ: Installing mandrake in my laptop
 |
 |
 | My laptop is a lowly P75 without CDROM drive. Well, I do
 have one, but
 it
 | it is external through a SCSI PCMCIA card according to
 the manufacturer
 is
 | not supported by linux (fujitsu chipset). I would like
 to initially
 | install Linux in a 800MB HD I have here doing nothing (I
 would swap it
 | with
 | the one currently in the computer). My ethernet card is also not
 | supported. How could I install Mandrake in the poor guy?

RE: [newbie] VMware 2 run Linux/Win together!

2000-05-12 Thread Bill . Gardner

Thanks! How does it actually operate - basically just as a
 regular Linux
 application?
Does it look like it would be easy to get rid of if it stops
 when the trial
 ends?

It runs on a 'virtual' partition on your system. Mandrake
has some really good info regarding this on their website.
You can download their version or buy the Macmillan/Mandrake version
at just about any retail location for $20.

Thanks,
BG

RE: [newbie] 3COM, @Home Service and Linux Mandrake 7.0

2000-05-11 Thread Bill . Gardner

FYI, partitionMagic comes on disc 3 of the Macmillan/Mandrake 7.0
However Roman is right on w/ the limitations of the version that is included in this
package.

Thanks,
BG

 Roman
If you have the full version of PartationMagic you can move, resize,
delete or add partitions at will including NTFS file systems.
 If you are
using the PM that comes with the Mandrake CD you CAN NOT modiy NTFS
partitions. So the answer to your question is YES and NO.
 Which PM do you
 have?

Subject: [newbie] 3COM, @Home Service and Linux Mandrake 7.0

Yes! My Power Pack is arriving today. Any how

As I am still new to this... Earlier this year, I purchased a Dell
Dimension XPSB 733 with Windows NT (arrgh - I wasn't aware
 of Mandrake).
My first FAT partition is 2 Gig. (drive C), my second FAT is 2 Gig.
(drive D). The third is about 15 Gig. (drive E), and is NTFS. A 3Com
card was included with the workstation.

From the previous e-mail, I have heard that there is an
 issue with 3COM.
And, Linux does not support USB - at least not until this Fall. I am
also using the @Home service for the Internet.
If I use Partition Magic, will I be able to squeeze another
 partition
between the 2nd and 3rd partitions for the Linux installation?

  Any help would be appreciated.

This is similar to the Mandrake/Macmillan Linux for Windows product but the two cannot
be run simultaneously.

Anyone know anything about VMware? I was looking at their website
(vmware.com) recently. They say you can run both Linux and MS
 Windows on 1
computer at the same time in their own virtual desktops! They
 have a 30 day
Linux trial copy to download. I don't know what happens after
 the trial
 period ends though.

RE: [newbie] GCC...where are you???

2000-05-05 Thread Bill . Gardner

Went through last night and reinstalled Linux using different
hard drive set just to see if it would clear up the gcc problem.

Does anybody know if MDK 7.0 supports Seagate hard drives?

Thanks,

RE: [newbie] Mandrake vs. RH

2000-05-01 Thread Bill . Gardner

I am assuming that most here have installed and run several different
flavors of Linux before deciding on one to use "full time". I
 was wondering
(hopefully without a flame war of any type) if any of you can
 tell me what
the advantages to Mandrake of RH Linux are?

I can clearly say the Mandrake install far exceeds the ease of the RH install.
Drak X is amazing. However, it sounds like you're not too concerned about
the install.

Thanks,
BG

Actually, I am. Considering my lack of skill and ability with
 Linux the
first thing that drew me to Mandrake was the ease of install.
 I just did a
RH 6.2 intall yesterday and although it was not too bad, I think the
Mandrake install was still better and easier.

...and I think you'll find that same quality throughout the distribution.
It's very easy to configure and set things up. However that might be biased.
(This is a Mandrake list afer all... ;-)

My second cd drive an r-w went unrecongnized during the

I think at this time, Linux only supports scsi cd burners.
Can someone confirm?

Kind of a general question here...

Does anybody know when Linux first went to a GUI and not entirely command line

Subject: [newbie] a couple of questions...

 hi,

i am new to linux and having a couple of problems that you
might be able to help me with. The first questions is that my
computer has 256 MB's of ram, but the system can only see 65
MB's, what can I do to resolve this?

In DrakX try doing a customized install and not the recommended.
At some point, (if I remember correctly) you should be able to
select the amnt. of ram

and I also have a small
LAN network ( Just two computers ) but my other computer is
an NT box. I am having no luck at all in trying to get them
to see eachother. They can ping eachother fine, but how can I
access files from both computers? ... hopefully these are not
too difficult to resolve and if they are I appreciate any
info or ideas you have to resolve my problems...

Can't help you too much there. Maybe configuring Apache as a file
server?? (I'm a newby too...)

Thanks,
BG

Howdy, just got 7.0 totally up and running however my network settings didn't take.
Does anybody know how I can go back edit network settings w/o having to re-install?
