Re: [newbie] Kmail - can receive, not send messages
Let me say at the start of this that the install was very very easy and I was up and running right away and connected to internet and sending messages. My only disappointment is with the failure of kmail, an apparently integral part of KDE. Reviewed and reviewed: Set to SMTP correct setting for ISP port 25 set to send now Next was: "Configuration of Kmail is not included in our list of free support." hmmm - coul reinstall and try again. Hope I wrote down all those settings. I can receive messages in kmail. I have same server settings as in other operating systems. Any ideas? thanks, Bill Billin kmail under the 'Settings' drop-down-menu there is a selection called 'Configuration'. In the 'Network' section under the 'Properties' tab in the 'Default send method' are you set to 'Send Now' or to 'Send Later'? -- Alan
RE: [newbie] Sendmail stopped working
Mandrake 7.0 I received and sent mail via Kmail for several weeks. Now I only receive. When I send (or send queued ) the msg comes up that it's being sent, then quickly disappears. The msg is still in the outbox. It is not in the sent-mail box. I've compared the Kmail settings with the settings I have for Caldera 2.2 (which I'm using for this message). Any clues what I might have screwed up? Mandrake runs well otherwise, easy to set up. Thank, Bill

I've just read in two messages which need to be shifted t o the side to be read. Just wondering what email program you are using and what the word-wrap (if any) is set at. Mine is 80 Bill

Re: [newbie] Supermount Woes
Alan - I asked several days ago if there is any dangers in using supermount and was assured that there isn't any danger (at least for a single-user system). Would you please explain why you say we should mount/umount the "old way"? I'm using ext2 files. thanks Bill On Tue, 04 Jul 2000, Alan Shoemaker wrote: Phildon't change the fstab entry. Re: [newbie] How do you format a zip disk?
I format my zip disks for linux with this command: mke2fs /dev/sda4 My disk is in the drive, mounted on supermount. The /etc/fstab entry for the zip must include ext2 for the file type. Bill On Wed, 28 Jun 2000, you wrote: Hello all, The subject just about covers it, I would like to know the command line (and also if there's a gui version) for formatting my zip disks to either ext2 or vfat. As a bonus, could I also get the same info for hard drives? I'm spoiled by Windows - point, right click, select 'format' - any thoughts? Thanks, Mike -- Mike Tracy Holt Kirkland, WA [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [newbie] Staroffice 5.1 install
Mandrake 7.0 Macmillan The Getting Started manual says to follow the ReadMe file insttructions on disk 3, which is: 'rpm -i StarOffice-5.1a_01_517i8-1.i386.rpm' in order to install from disk 3. and got a cannot find message. So I just opened the other icon StarOffice5.1a and installed it into /opt/Office51/ Now wondering how to start the program? I dont see any icon on the desktop or in the list of applications. Thanks for any help Bill

Thanks Paul and Tom I found that /opt/Office51/bin/soffice exectutes the completion of the installation and will take it from there when I can get back to this today. Re: [newbie] Staroffice 5.1 install
Mandrake 7.0 Thanks for the help for a successful install. StarOffice 5.1 Steps I used were a bit different from those suggested: 1. As user, not root, I unloaded from the #3 cdrom to: /opt/Office51/bin/soffice 2. In a terminal , executed /opt/Office51/bin/soffice which brought up the complete install process and this was very simple. Printer setup was unbelievably simple. I execute the program as a user. Re: [newbie] Supermount danger?
Is there a danger in using the supermount feature for zip disks or floppy disks? I thought from reading linux books that when we mount a floppy and insert a disk into that drive, then access the disk, that when finished we need to umount the disk, then mount again for the next disk, etc. Perhaps this is not necessary? If we use supermount is there any problems changing from disk to disk without umount? Bill
Re: [newbie] Domain not bound message
Mandrake 7.0 When I su to root, after entering the password, console displays: YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not bound what does this mean? Also, while the system is coming up from Boot Magic, there is a delay while this message is displayed: Listeing for an NIS Domain Server what does this mean? I'm only local, only outside connection is internet via modem. Wodering if I've made a wrong selection, and if so how can I fix it? Thanks Bill
Re: [newbie] adaptec scsi aha152x
Thanks Didier for the reply I tried the modprobe, no luck, so I reinstalled. This time just entered 0140,10,7,1 at the SCSI setup option. (the install book not clear here) Only other problem was that I needed to edit /etc/fstab to change the /mnt/zip from the vfat automatically set up to ext2 for linux.. I can access zip disk OK. Another question tho - there doesnt seem to be any way with this system to mount the zip drive on the desktop by right-clicking the zip icon. There seems to be only one icon showing, for either a mounted or unmounted zip drive. I edited /etc/fstab to make the zip and floppy drives noauto for mounting. Bill Hello, I have an adaptec aha152b. It work fine with these settings aha152x=0x340,11,7,1 (IO base, DMA, SCSI ID, parity) Try modprobe aha152x aha152x=0x340,11,7,1 [set the values according to your system] Then, if it works, enter the line in rc.local OR Reinstall (update) and enter the settings when asked. I hope this will be helpful. Also, the install book doesnt seem to indicate how to set up SCSI later if I do complete the rest of the installation. Suggestions appreciated. Re: [newbie] supermount
In editing the /etc/fstab I run across the term supermount. My books don't describe this. I want to set the zip and floppy drives so that a user as well as root can access them and I thought that the entry user or users would do this. Thanks for any info bill
