Re: [newbie] Any patch for KPanel-Edit Menus Error Message Anomaly?

Re: [newbie] KVirc (Was: Wine problems)
The news section on the kvirc site (http://www.kvirc.bz.nu/ -new url) states that KDE2 support is a compile time option so if you want that later it's better to d/l the tarball now. Re: [newbie] Memory isn't being used/found
I found that on my computer (AMD K6/2-450, VIA chipset) I had to use linuxconf; changes made with an editor to lilo.conf were just ignored. However, using an editor didn't stop it booting. Linux is more critical of ram, etc than windows. You stated that you changed from onboard video to an addon card. Find out if the ram used by the onboard video is freed when that video is disabled. If it is not then you will still have to decrease the total ram in the append statement by that amount. Also, some computers are known to require 1 less than the amount of ram available in the append statement. At the lilo prompt on boot, type linux mem=192M and when it crashes, ctrl-alt-del and reduce the number by 1 until it works, then use that in lilo.conf. If you get down to a ridiculously low level, linux doesn't like your ram, sorry. Bill Aaron wrote: If that is the same as adding the append="mem=192mb" line to the lilo.conf file then it wont work. My system will not boot at all if I do that. Different Kernel panic errors each time I change the file. As for the mismatched dimms; I have been using the same memory for a long time with windows. Would this only be a problem with Linux? Any suggestions. Try changing the order of the dimms in the sockets maybe with the biggest capacity dimm in slot 1 and see if linux sees more. In any case to use more than 64M do the following... Either go through drakconf on the desktop and then to linuxconf or type linuxconf as superuser in a terminal, then click on boot mode, LILO defaults, extra options, and at 'boot options' put 'mem=192M' without the quotes. Click on 'accept', 'yes' to activate, and 'quit' till you get out. If there are any errors and you are asked if you want to see the log files, say no. You will have to reboot to activate the change. If your built in video card uses shared ram, you will have to reduce the 192M by the shared amount. Bill. Aaron wrote: Ok, I have 192 mb of memory and my Mandrake install only sees/uses 16mb. Re: [newbie] netscape files
You could, but a shared directory would have to be on the win partition to be read and written by both win and linux, plus permissions changed on the win partition to allow nsmail to write. Possibly not worth it unless you are still using win a lot. Re: [newbie] netscape files
Michael wrote: Bill- could you be a bit more specific? I am unclear as to how you were able to import your netscape files from windows to mandrake and would love to learn more. -michael- OK, Firstly, I am using KDE. Click on the home folder on the panel and negotiate your way to the windows mail folder. Mine is /mnt/DOS_hda1/program files/netscape/ users/default/mail and the files are Drafts, Inbox, Sent, Templates and Unsent Messages. Not much point worrying about Trash unless you're a collector :). Select all of those (hold down Ctrl while you left-click on each file) then right-click on one of those files and click on 'copy'. Check your netscape preferences (edit...preferences...mail servers) and look at 'local mail directory' (in my case it is /home/billg/nsmail/). Now go there in kfm and right-click on a clear spot on the screen then click 'paste'. Where there are filename clashes, a warning window will open and you can change the name of the file then click on 'rename'. There was an error in my last post...you have to close netscape and reopen it for the new sub-folders to appear in the mail window. Thats it! Bill

you don't have to exit from xwindows first to shutdown. just use the logout button under the kde or gnome button on the panel. steve harris wrote: yes it is. what i do is exit from xwindows as the user then at the user prompt "su", then "shutdown" normally. this saves you from logging out and back in as root to shutdown.
