[newbie] Mandrake Club Mirror finder for rpmdrake

2003-01-17 Thread Brent Hasty
http://www.mandrakeclub.com/modules.php?name=Mirrors

How to configure URPMI or RPMDRAKE to use web resources for parsing avalible
Mandrake Compiled Applications.

What this means is the thousands of different programs that have been bundled
into RPM's for MDK, and are whearhoused on a servers hard drive on the
internet. Can be integrated and linked into your software manager. So after
adding the appropriate source this link assists you in doing, you can simply
querie in rpmdrake for a specific app, say openoffice provided your lists
are uptodate it will show you all the results matching openoffice, you can
then select what you want, and urpmi will automagically take care of any
dependencies (those apps where one program depends on another).

Viola, openoffice and all associated components are installed.

Verry Cool Huh!!1
so take the time to configure this, besides updating your lists you only need
to add them once. (and if you really fall in love with this become a club
member for more bennifits)

Enjoy,

Then wouldn't it theoretically be possible to create a fake /dev/ - a
symlink to the device on the target system - or, conversely, point the
output of the sane on the scanner server to a pseudo printer on one of
the workstations (printer as a file - like ps, gv or pdf)...?

...or am I too tired and over caffeinated to make sense?
This sounds neat, but I would need help doing such a thing.
How would one create the nessicary sym links that will be functional?

[newbie] mystery character sneaks into typed text

2002-12-09 Thread Brent Hasty
when typing in many programs I often have this ' character appear in texts.
Why?

It seems it may have somthing to do with typing, backspace, or arrow to move
the cursor, space and or then typing again. For some reason that ' character
is inserted randomly in typed text???

I agree with the nice simple answer, I was wondering if there was a way to

How would it appear to issue such a command

$ rec -s w -c 2 -r 44100 myfile.wav | lame

Cheers Bryan, this was what I was looking for, a nice simple command which
worked perfectly. I dropped the rate down from 44100 to 8000 as these tapes
are only speech and do not contain music. Quality seems very acceptable,
although I think I will have to compress to mp3 format as even these .wav
 files are still rather large.

This does not quite seem logical to me. The computer that the scanner is
attached need be the only one you work with while scanning as you would
have to run back and forth from Comp B, C, or D to scanner to
replace/adjust the source paper. Scan and save the images, then share them
 with the network.

well first of all my scanners plural, have sheet feeders, unfortunatly due to

it's easier for me to track out the rogues...if any...as well, keep a

On SunOS4 there was a cute command line app called (I think) file. It
had a table of magic numbers and a small amount of parsing ability, so
that it could identify the type of 'any' file. For a core file it
indicated the application that it related to.

  Does such exist on Linux?

 informational...
K, so what is it?
the name of the not quite as good but similar program?
