[newbie] Gnome vs. KDE

2003-07-20 Thread Brooks Family
Hi all. I've got Mandrake 9.1 and I'm currently using Gnome2.2 for my
desktop. However, I've noticed that there are a lot more things that
seem to be written for KDE (themes, applications, etc.). What makes KDE
so much more popular than Gnome?

I'm not real big on KDE either. I like Gnome because it seems to be
very configurable and looks smoother than KDE.

What do you mean by Bloat?

Re: [newbie] urpmi update performed on Xine...

2003-07-18 Thread Brooks Family

I'm using 9.1, but I don't know about the cooker thing. Actually, I
just did a urpmi update and then did an install using the GUI in the
Mandrake Control Center and it installed Xine, Mplayer, and Totem
perfectly, and they all seem to run like a champ now. *shrug* I don't
know how or why, but it seems to have worked.

Haven't seen that one yet. Installing xine is confusing,
since there are so many components and it is unclear to
me which to install.

What distro are you using? I was using 9.1/cooker until
recently. My recent addition (CD/DVD combo drive) seems
to have hosed it. I'm trying to get back in step with
9.0 and things are missing.

It likely is true. I'm not in California, so I cannot say
definitively. However, here is a website that will allow you to
research Mr. Berman and any other politician you want to know about.

Does anyone know where I can get some themes for Gnome 2.2 that have
transparent backgrounds in the windows? (i.e., when I open up, say,

Thanks

[newbie] urpmi mplayer error message on install

2003-07-16 Thread Brooks Family
I'm running Mandrake 9.1 and I ran the urpmi command for the mplayer.
The computer went out and found all the necessary install packages and
downloaded them, but when it tried to install them, it failed, showing
these errors:

Installation failed:

file /usr/lib/win32/vp31vfw.dll from install of

Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks

[newbie] Python 2.2

2003-07-09 Thread Brooks Family
Ok. Now, I'm trying to install gDeskCal for my desktop (Gnome2.2) on
Mandrake 9.1 and I can't do it because it says that I need pygtk2. So I
found the rpm for pygtk2 but I can't install that because it says that I
need python 2.2. This is the root of my problem: I can't find Python
2.2 ANYWHERE!! Does anyone know where I can get it??

Re: [newbie] Python 2.2

2003-07-09 Thread Brooks Family

Ok. I did what you said and this is what I got:

python-2.2.2-6mdk

So, this brings up the next obvious question: why would I get a
message saying that I need Python2.2 when I try to install
pygtk2-1.99.16-1.i386.rpm? I've tried to install it via the rpm
command in a terminal as well as through the automatic function that
starts up when I double-click on the icon.

Thanks for your help!

It should be installed by default, IIRC.

try:

rpm -q python

post output here.

if not installed, just urpmi python (as root), it should be on the CDs.

I went to the site and followed the instructions. My machine had to
download a lot of things. I'm not sure what any of it was, but I think
you certainly put me on the right track. Thanks a lot for your help.
I'll give you an update as I move forward on my installation.

The .rpm you are trying to install is looking in the wrong place for
Python. It is possibly not built for Mandrake. Where did you grab it?

Try instead, "urpmi pygtk2" as root.

Warning: this may conflict with pygtk 0.6.9 which may be required by
other apps. If not, you should be good to go.

If you get "unknown package pygtk2", it just means you have to make sure
your sources are up to date.

[newbie] Redhat png icons for openoffice

2003-07-07 Thread Brooks Family
Hi, I've got Mandrake 9.1, but I've seen Redhat's latest desktop and
have noticed that it has different icons for open office than what comes
with Mandrake. Does anyone know where I can download those png files
because they are nicer and sharper-looking than the standard OpenOffice
icons in Mandrake? Or, if anyone has them on your computer, could you
send them to me?

Thanks
