I've tried the swap and, when the 256 chip is in the first position, I get nothing;

When I leave just the 256 chip in by itself, I get a really long beep and, again,
nothing.

On the CDROM, do you have it set as master or slave? Make sure the jumper is in

connector. I think that the best way to connect is to have the HDs on Primary (master
and slave)  and the CDROM and CDRW on secondary master and slave. Others may prefer a
different arrangement. I have run into the problem with the hard drive as you have
and the only way I could get the harddrive recognized was to reformat. I first erased
it with DiskEraser and then did a clean install. HTH

I have the 20Gb HD now set to primary master (on ribbon and jumper settings) and the
cdrom set to secondary master. Still no change. Also, is there a difference in IDE
cables? I notice the ribbon for the hd that came with the new system is slimmer than
the ones I have in the old system. Would that have an effect? In other words, if I'm
trying to use an older ribbon on the newer system, will that keep the old stuff from
operating properly? Could the newer motherboard and power supply short out the old HD
and cdrom?

When I try to boot from cdrom, it says Boot from CDROM: Failure

[newbie] USB memory stick/ Gnome2.4 install?

2003-09-14 Thread Brooks3J
Hello all
For those of you who helped me with my memory stick problem, I think it's a
non-issue for now. I think my usb ports are dead. Which is not a bad thing since I
can justify buying a new pc now to my wife. :) This one is fairly old. But thanks
for your help, anyway.

My new task is trying to upgrade from Gnome2.2 to 2.4 . When I go out to the Gnome
website, I just get confused on what to do. Does anyone know if there are any rpms or
any other easy way to download and install Gnome2.4?

Thanks
Jack

[newbie] USB memory stick

2003-09-12 Thread Brooks3J
Hi, I saw the thread about USB mass storage devices, but I'm not sure if what I'm
talking about is the same thing, so I apologize if it is. I'purchased one of those
USB memory sticks (made by GE) and it works great for my laptop (WinXP; sorry, I need
to keep a Win machine for school) but I cannot get my desktop (M9.1) to read it. I
know the usb ports are working because I've plugged in other things, but it won't
recognize the memory stick. Can I do anything or am I s-o-l?

Thanks in advance,
Jack

RichardA [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

It should work. What do you mean by 'won't recognise'?

Does /mnt/removable get created? If so, try to mount it: mount
/mnt/removable.

As root, Run tail -f /var/log/messages and plug it in. Does something
happen? (CTRL-C to end this).

Richard

By not recognize I mean, I get nothing from the computer showing the memory stick.
/mnt/removable does not get created (not that I can see, anyway) and here are the
results of trying the mount command per your instructions:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] brooks]# mount /mnt/removable
mount: can't find /mnt/removable in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

I tried the tail command you listed and something happened at first (I received a
message showing that the memory was plugged in). However, before I could paste the
message result in this email, I copied the results from the mount command, thus losing
the results of the tail command. SO, when I tried the tail command again and plugged
in the memory stick, I got nothing. When I looked at the port to make sure the stick
was plugged in, I noticed that it's not even getting power now (there's a light on it
that should come on) and so I might have a hardware problem...

Either way, it is definitely not creating /mnt/removable . Could it be an issue with
Gnome? I'm using Gnome2.2 (How can I upgrade to 2.4? If you've got an extra minute
to answer that one as well, that'd be great.)

Thanks
Jack

[newbie] GE Wireless Optical Mouse H097990

2003-08-19 Thread Brooks3J
Does anyone know if there are any linux drivers for this wireless optical mouse? The
mandrake site does not show GE as a manufacturer, much less the mouse. Is there some
other support for it? If not, has anyone tried Microsoft's wireless optical mouse
with Mandrake 9.1? If so, does it work? How did you get it to do so? I wanted to
avoid buying anything MS, but if that's all that will work, then that's what I'll go
with.

Thanks in advance,
Jack

Ever since I've download this stuff, however, other problems have been occuring. For
example, everytime I try to use mplayer to play a wmv file or xine to play a quicktime
file (I have the plugins installed for both of these programs), xine and mplayer both
just lock up. RealPlayer 8 does the same when I try to view some RealPlayer files
from the web. Any ideas?

Ok, I've finally got it up and running. I needed to reboot the computer for KDM to
show XFce4. (Was that in your directions? I apologize, if it was, since that means I
wasted your time.) But, I wanted to say thanks a lot for helping me out and creating
the rpms for XFce4.

[newbie] xfce4-rc2 rpms that Todd wrote.

2003-07-21 Thread Brooks3J
Ok, Joe, if you're still up, I need your help. I downloaded the rpm packages for
xfce4-rc2 that Todd was kind enough to create and I have them all in a file called
xfce4-rc2 as per Todd's directions. The question is: what do I do now? Is there a
way to install all of the packages with one command? Or do I have to install them one
at a time?

Thanks

Todd,

If I open the file I can read it but it doesn't let me change anything.
