If not, could you post a url where one could download IFTP? I'd love to give it a shot. I mean if it kicks NCFTP's ass, it's GOT to be good! :-) John = IglooFtp is daBomb - i just saw it on rufus.w3.org RPM site. - Chip.
[newbie] Grip - CD ripper/encoder - problem solved
I solved the problem with grip (version 2.9) - it was only recording 3/4 of the song and then quitting. It was using "cdda2wav" for the rip and "lame" for the mp3 encoding - I changed the configuration of grip to use "bladeenc", instead of "lame" (had to install bladeenc first); now it rips and encodes the whole song easily. Guess it was just a lame problem (heh). Chip Rose. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[newbie] cd ripper / mp3 maker
Anyone got recommendations for a music cd ripper and mp3 maker? I've tried Grip, which has nice user interface (not just command prompt like a couple others), but I can't get it to record/convert the entire song. Grip always does between 2/3 and 3/4 of the song, then stops - what gives? I do a "Rip Encode", and Grip uses cdda2wav for the rip and lame for the encode to mp3. Anyone? Thanks, Chip Rose. How could the same distribution, on the same box, re-installed in the same manner, suddenly not work? I never got sound working under Redhat 5.0, 5.1, or 6.0, but it worked right away under Mandrake6.0. Any pointers greatly appreciated! Attempting x11amp gives me the error: "Couldn't open audio!" Attempting kaudioserver from command prompt gives error: "maudio: Cannot open audio device" Did you re-run sndconfig? Also, check the permissions on /dev/audio and /dev/dsp. John yes - uh, it works great now.. Thanks! I had been trying to run sndconfig without being root. I even tried which sndconfig, and it appeared that sndconfig wasn't installed - now I know that you not only have to be root to run sndconfig, but also to find the program location using a which command. (heh heh - I need to go to the "duh" webpage and sign their guestbook!). I'm listening now to classical guitar in x11amp - strangely, the volume doesn't go nearly as high as it does in MS-Windows, but at least the terrible hiss is completely absent using x11amp/linux.. Thanks again! Chip Rose. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [newbie] Good Newsgroup Reader?
I've been using Free Agent as my NG reader in window$ for as long as I have been online. Now that I'm moving up to Linux, what do you recommend? Thanks. = Linux has nothing that even remotely matches Agent/Free Agent, or the other Windows newsreaders, *PARTICULARLY* in regard to handling binary files (pics, mp3's). Agent just downloads them and automatically and quickly opens the file in Winamp or in an photo/image viewer like VuePro. In Linux you've got to download the file and then start another helper application to open the file separately - kind of like going out in the winter cold to crank-start your car and then opening the hood to manually start it again at every traffic light/stop sign, and then once you're finished driving it. A killer-app is one that you'd be willing to change OS's for - the Agent/Vuepro combination is a killer app in my opinion. I always use SLRN for news - it is very fast and fairly efficient for TEXT, but it won't handle binaries hardly at all - at least not without the tedious manual downloading, saving to a directory and then re-opening with another application like Winamp or XV photo viewer etc.. I LOVE Linux, but it's a definite "non-player" in the Usenet world.. I'd certainly go ahead and purchase a commercial app for Linux if there were one that was anywhere near the efficiency/ability of Agent.
