I had the same problem. I found that the screen resolution was to low
(640X480), had to bump up to (800X600). You can also set a virtual desktop
to 800X600

If you are using KDE click on the K menu icon and select Panel, and
configure.
There you will be able to choose where the panel is positioned on the
desktop
and choose it's size ( tiny, normal, large )
If it is Gnome then I think you can not change the panels size though
