Welcome to one of the 'quirks' of Mandrake 7.0 ( I presume that is what
flavor you have). If I recall, if you don't select 'Custom', and
'Development' during install, or otherwise explicitly specify to install
the compiler, you don't get it. If you are downloading an *.rpm file,
you should be able to install that no problem, assuming you have all the
 dependencies (required files/libraries,etc.) satisfied.

Hi Alan, Paul, and anyone else who wants to chime in :-)

Well, I tried the various suggestions, but no luck. Draxconf doesn't seem
to
have a "sound" option - I'll leave the sound alone for now.

I think I should first concentrate on the problem with the floppy and CDRW
drives (and I have an internal ZIP drive - I'm guessing that doesn't work
either). I've attached the output of dmesg - during boot, it looks like
the
CDRW and ZIP are recognized as ATAPI, but then later down, as scsi
devices.
Also, there are lots of error related to the floppy drive. Could you take
a
look and see if there is something in the boot msgs that can point the way
 out of this ?
I'm learning a bunch of little things along the way here, so I appreciate
 the response.

 Thanks,
 Philomena

philomenagotta' update my previous reply...oops! Sorry,
that one got away from me :-) Anyway, there is no setup any
more (it probably is an artifact on some people's systems from a

it's now called drakxconf and can be launched from a console as
  root.

are exactly like yours, but the devices are still not working. Error

Well, what do you consider usual? : )

You can find the manuel on Mandrakes site somewhere, so make sure you read
all
through the installation procedure before you straight. Also make sure you
know
exactly what's in your system; video card, monitor, mouse, sound card,
etc. And
the hardest part is partitioning your system. Once you get past that, the
rest
of installation is a breeze; just answer the questions. Good Luck!

Hello all I am getting ready to install Mandrake 7.0 for my first time.
Is there any thing
I could read or any tips so I do not mess up my system.
I do not have the manuel etc. Any tips besides the usual. Thanks
