Ideally, I would look for a company in the USA, with either state-wide local numbers, or an 800 number to call, which would care about its customers and who at least have some knowledge about Linux (the big ones all want us to run Win32 software on our machines). Other considerations are, of course, ease of connection, downtime, etc. Is anybody on this list actually happy with his ISP and mail server provider? If yes, please help me out with this! Also, I prefer not to go with a company which provides email as a sideorder for long-distance or local telephone service. While I cannot afford to pay much, I use dial-up anyway, I certainly would be willing to pay for good quality. I was told that Earthlink is ok. Does anybody know? Finally, it would be ideal to find a company which is strongly pro-Linux or somehow linked with the linux community. Am I dreaming, Cheers, Andrei It's hard to tell what ISP's users running GNU/Linux are getting support from, but for overall ratings it's hard to beat the user's ratings at: http://www.dslreports.com/ (not just for DSL) For ISP ratings in general I usually tell people to start at a site such as: http://www.etestinglabs.com/services/ibs/usratings.asp?visitor=X or just pick one in your area (Florida?) and Google them. :-) You'd be surprised how many complaints/kudos are available on newsgroups and various mailing list archives. [newbie] kernel
Well my kernel is name 2.4.17-10 using 'uname -r' to check. But when I used 'rpm -ivh kernel*' it updated the kernel no problem. I tried to update the source, headers, docs but gave me an error on the headers. so with uname -r it shows the new kernel but with the command 'rpm -qa kernel*' it shows the old kernel headers, docs, source. I think I am done except I may want to keep the old kernel in place or maybe just remove it after I find this one is stable. thanks eric l. mcclure I feel like a million bucks somewhat updating my first kernel! also my other questions were not answered that I post, would somebody like to take a stab at it? What is the difference between: kernel enterprise kernel kernel security And for the docs do I use kernel.html kernel.ps kernel.pdf or does it really matter? I've downloaded all of these 2.4.17-10.mdk kernel kernel headers kernel security kernel source kernel enterprise kernel.html kernel.ps kernel.pdf kernel smp kernel boot If I use the command 'rpm -ivh kernel*' does anyone foresee any problems? This will be my second attempt and I know to check lilo but want to be able to use ppp module for internet and this rpm business looks pretty effortless (I HOPE). on my machine the source, headers, doc, kernel are all the same version as 2.4.8-26mdk I believe.
