[newbie] 8.2 for the PPC: File System Difficulty

2002-05-30 Thread Irena and Richard Jenkins

My apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but after
successfully installing 8.2 on my iMac (G3 350 MHz, 256 Meg RAM) I am
unable to boot it properly.

To my eye it appears to stop the installation at the line...
Mount USB file system

I should add that I have configured a printer o this machine - a
parallel port HP model working through a usb== parallel converter.

Can anyone suggest what I need to do differently??

 Hi all,
Had my Linux Mandrake up and running on my Pii but for family reasons
need to switch to a box that is using what appears to be a TXProII
Motherboard. This has built in Video Card SiS 5597/5598 (according to
Windows) and sound card. I dont think that the sound card will be a
problem tho. Its running a CyrixMII-300 CPU . I now can not get X
 happening.was before.

I say "appears to be" above as I do not have any documentation re this
computeronly what I can ascertain from the box itself.(Even got down
with a light to look inside!) Any clues or thoughts would be
appreciated. I have looked thru the Hardware How Tos.and may have
 missed something.

 Thanks in advance

Greetings from Canberra. I too have a motherboard with a SiS chipset.
To get XFree86 going you need to get a copy of the current version
3.3.3.1 - which offers plenty of support for SiS chips. Older versions
such as those supplied with Slackware 3.6, Red Hat 5.2 will probaly NOT
work! Mandrake includes the latest servers. I elected to buy Mandrake
from LSLat
 http://www.lsl.com.au
definitely much less bother than downloading and
installing all those files. Price was $6.95 (plus postage).

If you don't install Mandrake ... but just the latest version of
XFree86, you may have to use xf86Config ... because the standard VGA
server will not work ... so XF86Setup, Xconfigurator which use this
server ... will NOT work.

At present I am getting a limited range of displays (ie 2)... but I do
have a working model.

For information SuSE also market a brand new special server for SiS
chips. I got it off the internet site okay (using Lynx), but I could
not get it configured. Not enough linux experience you see.

Finally ... this chipset pinches RAM to run the video ... so be generous
with your RAM. I use 64 meg ... but 8 is set aside for video. What's
left is more than enough to run xwindows.

Cheers for now
