[newbie] ALSA --which services to start?

2001-11-21 Thread James F. Marshall

I cannot get sound to work, as explained in other posts.

According to the SysV-Init Editor, the three following services
are started, available, and on when I boot: alsa, alsasound, and
sound. Yes, three different services with three different
scripts. Is this too many? Do they conflict? Should I turn
off one or more of these three?

[newbie] Proper modules.conf for CS423x Sound Card?

2001-11-20 Thread James F. Marshall

I have one sound card only. I has both a CS4237B sound chip and
a CS9236 sound chip. From the ALSA INSTALL file, it appears
that I must use the cs4236 driver.

Here are the sound lines that I have in /etc/modules.conf. The
first line was placed there by the Mdk 8.1 installation. I
inserted all the rest after reading parts of the ALSA INSTALL
file. I will number the lines for discussion purposes.

1 alias sound-slot-0 ad1848
2 alias char-major-116 snd
3 alias char-major-14 soundcore
4 alias snd-card-0 snd-card-cs4236
5 alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
6 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
7 alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
8 alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
9 alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
10 alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

I hear a crackle when Gnome comes up, but then nothing. No
sound applications work.

Do 1 and 4 conflict? Should I have deleted 1 when I added 4?
It appears that ad1848 is loaded twice.

Lines 2-5 appear necessary according to the ALSA INSTALL file.
Are these lines correct for my single sound card?

Lines 6-10 are wild guesses based on examples in the ALSA
INSTALL file. I know that the zeros in the first position point
to my single sound card, but I have no idea about the services
represented by the numbers (0, 1, 3, 8, 12) in the second
position. I have no idea how to go about assigning the oss
compatibility drivers. Do I need lines 6-10? If so, how do I
verify the correctness of the service numbers?

My modprobe command was modprobe snd-card-cs4236. Is that
sufficient?

Re: [newbie] Proper modules.conf for CS423x Sound Card?

2001-11-20 Thread James F. Marshall

On Tue, 20 Nov 2001 20:23:11 +0100, Frans Ketelaars wrote:

Here are the sound lines that I have in /etc/modules.conf.

I commented out following line 1:

 1 alias sound-slot-0 ad1848

Now, during boot, I see a message that the cs4236 driver loaded
OK, and I hear a crackle. From that point on, I hear no sound
no matter what I try to run.

How do I un-mute sound?

The ESD Volume Meter does not work. It reports the error that
it cannot connect to sound daemon. It says to run esd at a
command prompt. I get the same error message even after running
esd at a command prompt as root. When I try to run esd as a
non-root user, I get the following error messages:

esd: failed to fix mode of /tmp/.esd to 1777
esd: Esound sound daemon unable to create unix domain socket:
/tmp/.esd/socket
The socket is not accessible by esd.

KMidi reports an error that it can't open Output Device.

XMMS would start but would not play sample.midi . XMMS produced
no sound and no error report. It just seems to ignore efforts
to play the file.

The Audio Mixer fails to start. It reports that it is not able
to open the audio device, suggests checking for permission to
open /dev/mixer (I don't seem to have such a file), and says to
make sure that sound support is compiled into the kernel.

I left following lines 2-5 alone:

 2 alias char-major-116 snd
 3 alias char-major-14 soundcore
 4 alias snd-card-0 snd-card-cs4236
 5 alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

Commenting out the following lines appeared to make no
difference:

 6 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
 7 alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
 8 alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
 9 alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
 10 alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

Yes, you must delete or comment out line 1. After a reboot the ad1848 module
hopefully is out of the way. (there are other ways to remove unwanted modules
of course). You can check with '/sbin/lsmod' which modules are loaded. Note:
snd-ad1848 is _another_ module which _may_ be needed by ALSA for you soundcard.

As noted, I still hear the crackle after commenting out the
ad1848 driver in modules.conf. Does that mean I probably don't
need it?

I'm confused about whether and what sound support to have
compiled into the kernel. Given that I am using the ALSA driver
and it appears to be loading from modules.conf, do I still want
sound compiled into the kernel? How do I check to see whether
sound is compiled into the kernel and whether it is the right
sound support? If I have the wrong sound support in the kernel,
or if I do not want any sound support into the kernel, how do I
get it OUT of the kernel and boot from the modified kernel? Do
I want to compile ALSA support for the cs4236 into the kernel?
Is that even possible?

These lines are for OSS/Free compatibility and you do need them for most
applications. I'm now listening to XMMS with the OSS output plugin, while
using the ALSA drivers.

I'm trying to ensure that old and new sound stuff works. Do
lines 6-10 above appear to be the correct way to do? As noted,
I am clueless about the meaning of services 0, 1, 3, 8, and 12.

My modprobe command was modprobe snd-card-cs4236. Is that
 sufficient?

Yes. If you didn't get any error it seems the ALSA driver was loaded!

I see no error -- in fact, I see that the ALSA driver loaded
OK -- during boot, prior to X. Does that mean that the
modprobe command was okay? If not, should I expect to see an
error message, apart from hearing no sound?

Linux is difficult!

[newbie] No Sound in Mandrake 8.1

2001-11-16 Thread James F. Marshall

I have never heard sound in Mdk 8.1.

Linuxconf and SomethingDrake both recognize the card for what it
is (Crystal something). I have the box checked for sounds at
startup or whatever (in a different OS now).

When I type esd at a command line, the output states:

esd: Failed to fix mode of /tmp/.esd to 1777.
esd: Esound sound daemon unable to create unix domain socket:
/tmp/.esd/socket
The socket is not accessible by esd.

esd -trust is also unsuccessful.

RealPlayer 8 gave an error message to the effect that the sound
card or module could not be accessed and might be in use (by
esd?).

How do I get sound to work?

[newbie] WordPerfect 8.0 Printer Installation Problem

2001-11-12 Thread James F. Marshall

I have a printer installed under Mandrake 8.1. The printer
works with a print test and Netscape. However, when I try to
setup a printer for WP 8.0, I find no destination available for
assignment to the printer. The only choice I get is between
printing to disk and printing to $PRINTER, but I cannot assign a
destination to $PRINTER. In Mandrake 8.1, my printer is called
Brother and set up as an HP Laserjet IIP. When I installed WP
8.0, I installed the drivers for HP Laserjet IIP and for the
specific Brother model that I have (which emulates the HP
Laserjet IIP). As noted, however, the installation program that
no destinations were available for assignment to either driver.

I have seen discussion of creating a RAW printer, but I have no
idea how to do that. Also, I don't see how I could assign a
destination to that either.

What am I doing wrong? How do I fix it?

[newbie] Re: WordPerfect 8.0 Printer Installation Problem

2001-11-12 Thread James F. Marshall

The problem was the printing system that I had installed for
Mandrake 8.1. I originally installed PDQ and could not create a
RAW printer. When I installed CUPS, that made it possible to
create the RAW printer, thereby allowing WP 8.0 to print. In
other words, it appears that WP 8.0 requires CUPS.

[newbie] WordPerfect 8.0 Font Installer Crashes

2001-11-10 Thread James F. Marshall

I have WP 8.0 (commercial CD) on Mandrake 8.1. I have gotten
past the problem requiring libc5 and ld.so2.0, and I have been
able to get xwp running with the small number of fonts installed
by default. However, I am having a serious problem trying to
install additional adobe type 1 fonts. In short, xwpfi crashes
when it tries to update wp.drs, shuts down with no error
messages, and leaves xwp unstartable. I have reinstalled from
CD several times, and the same thing occurs each time I try to
install more fonts. When I try to delete fonts, I get and error
message stating that the .all file or wp.drs is missing or
corrupted. It appears to be a problem with wp.drs. Is this a
known problem? Is there a fix?

I have figured out that for any given font, I need both the .afm
and .pfb files for that font. So long as I have both, I should
be able to install any adobe type 1 font, right?

I don't know if this is related, but I also am having printer
problems. During installation, I cannot chose the installed
system printer which works with, e.g., Netscape and the print
test. The only printer choices are $PRINTER and saving to a
text file. When I try to assign a destination to $PRINTER, I
get an error messages that there are no destinations available.
Is this a known problem? Is there a fix for it?

Re: [newbie] Installing WordPerfect 8.0 under Mandrake 8.1

2001-11-09 Thread James F. Marshall

It appears that the solution is to install the following:

 (a) libc5-5

 (b) ld.so-1.9.11-4mdk

I already have libc5.3.12-35mdk, which takes care of (a), right?

When I tried to install (b), GnomeRPM reported two conflicts.
Even when I said ignore these conflicts, the installation
failed.

What more must I do to install WP 8.0 under Mandrake 8.1? I
paid for the commercial version of WP 8.0 a couple of years ago.
I don't see any runme file.
