Re: [newbie] 2.4 and ipchains
Yeah I think its better. The xconfig screen under network, then netfilter options has an option to include iptables that uses the new netfilter screen. Unfortunately its greyed out and I cannot figure out what will enable it. This kernel employs a new type of filtering called "iptables" instead of ipchains. I've heard that it's a better type of packet filtering although I haven't yet started to figure out how it works. (other more pressing problems at the moment) There does seem to be quite a bit of documentation on the net about iptables though. -- Mark Larry is NOT a cucumber...he's a stinkin pickle... I want to switch to 2.4, but cannot figure out how to get it to work with ipchains. When I do a make xconfig, within the netfilter section there is a ipchains 2.2 section at the very bottom, but it is greyed out. How can I compile a 2.4 kernel with ipchains support. [newbie] IP Masquerading
I'm a linux newbie. I've set up a machine with Mandrake 7.1 that I'm about to convert to 7.2. I want to use it as a firewall between my internal network and my outside T1. I've got a firewall script set up using IPChains that seems to work pretty well. I created and used internal network IP addresses. I've got several machines where I would like certain ports to get through the firewall. I have assigned internet IP addresses for these machines that I would like to translate to my internal IP's, and reverse it going out. But only on certain ports. What is the best approach for this? Thanks, Jon Greisz *** REPLY SEPARATOR *** On 11/2/00 at 8:45 AM Mark Johnson wrote: Yes, this looks like another eruption of off-topic posts... IMHO, VB should be ported because that is the only way to achieve portability for MS Office documents. StarOffice is really cool but ultimately not feasible if you are exchanging documents with a group of MS Office folks. Unfortunately, VB would bring office products closer to managing that feasiblity. Unfortunately, VB is not an elegant language but it suits it's purpose. Too bad tcl, perl, python, java, or javascript wasn't used for building these dynamic docs. But those languages present quite a learning curve, this was VB strength. Also, it enabled MS to lock in a lot of folks to it's proprietary ways of doing things.
[newbie] installation
The 1st time I installed 7.1 I didn't get DrakConfig and some other programs so I thought I'd reinstall. This time after the install it reboots to a Grub prompt? It didn't do this the 1st time? What did I do wrong? Thanks, Jon PS. I'm installing on a PII 400, 128MB, 10.8GB, 2 nics.
[newbie] Auto Updates
I bought and installed Mandrake 7.1 this weekend. I cannot find how to do an Auto Update. Where would this be located. Thanks, Jon Greisz
[newbie] Firewall
I bought Mandrake 7.1 and installed it this weekend. I'm trying to setup a firewall between my network and the internet. I've got the following: Server with Mandrake 7.1 NIC - configured for internal network NIC - configured for internet, connected to our T1 I've used 192.168.1.0/24 as my internal subnets. I've got 64 external IP's. I need to allow access to several of my client machines on the internal network using a specific port from the internet. All of my clients need access to the internet. What is the easiest way to get a firewall going. Thanks, Jon Greisz
Re: [newbie] Auto Updates
I think I chose server install and went with pretty much every option. This is for a router/firewall. I do not have any Star Icons except for news. *** REPLY SEPARATOR *** On 10/9/00 at 12:50 PM Larry Marshall wrote: I bought and installed Mandrake 7.1 this weekend. Re: [newbie] Firewall
I'll look at that, but I had found Seattle Firewall before that, so I'm installing that 1st. I've got the Seattle Firewall up and running and it seems to be doing the trick. I'm just not sure if I can do my adddress translation. I've got several PC's that we use for supporting software. We use Carbon Copy for this support. I need to open these PC's to the internet using a specified port. I need to be able to assign the internet IP's for these machines to their internal IP's, and choose which ports to allow through the firewall.
