[newbie] Problems with xinetd, telnet, and mandrake 7.2

2001-02-09 Thread Kevin Tambascio

Hello,

I wanted to have the telnet service running under Mandrake 7.2. This box is
not used for anything secure, so I don't worry about telnet and clear
passwords.

I read up on xinetd, and added a file called telnet to my /etc/xinetd.d
directory. that file looks like this:

# default: on
# description: Telnet Server
service telnet
{
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = root
server = /usr/sbin/tcpd
server_args = in.telnetd
}

I did:

ps -aux | grep xinetd
kill -USR2 pid
telnet localhost

at this point, I see this:

# telnet localhost
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localdomain.
Escape character is '^]'.

but I never see a login prompt, or the message saying "welcome to mandrake
7.2" or something like that. before I added this telnet file to
/etc/xinetd.d, I would get connection refused.

Any ideas? I'm running 2.2.17, and have kept up with major security updates.

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: [newbie] Updating KDE 2 to KDE 2 Beta 2

2001-01-29 Thread Kevin Tambascio

Has anyone had any problems with KMail? I use KMail to just read my email,
not delete it from the POP server. However, after upgrading to Beta 2 from
2.0.1, I found that I was getting multiple copies of the same email
everytime the email was checked. Is there a new setting or something that I
missed? I looked at my account configuration a couple times, but couldn't
see anything obvious. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Other than that, I have been pretty happy with Beta 2. It definetly seems
to be faster on my system than before. KDevelop works really well. The
only other problem I have is that the "default" them in KDE 2 does not have
any window frames around the windows, and I can't resize any windows. I
switched to one of the other themes and I was able to see frames. How can I
modify the default theme to get frames again?

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

 Chris,

Yes, I di use kdm, but I've not experienced any login problems of any
sort. I couldn't be happier with the package performance or KDE for that
 matter.

Do you use kdm? Some users had a problem with kdm configuration that
caused a
problem logging in and a bunch of service ID users showing up. This
fixed

Re: [newbie] Tell Grub that I 've a new kernel

2001-01-26 Thread Kevin Tambascio

Open up /boot/grub/menu.lst and added an entry for the new kernel. I just
copied an existing entry, and pasted it in and renamed the entry and the
kernel that it points to. Then I just save the file and reboot to boot up
into the new kernel.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Hi, I wanna know how to tell grub that I've a new kernel. This, with
lilo, is
 done by:

 # make bzlilo

 but with grub?

Re: [newbie] Patches

2001-01-26 Thread Kevin Tambascio

Hi,

Has anyone had any problems with Mandrake Update freezing during the
updates? I was trying to perform a bunch of the updates, maybe about half,
and the MandrakeUpdate froze during the actual installation. Doing a
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or Ctrl-Alt-Delete did not do anything! Mouse and
keyboard were non-responsive. The harddrive was making tons of noise, so it
got stuck doing something. If I selected one or two of the updates, that
seemed to work OK. After rebooting, I re-ran MandrakeUpdate, and the
potential list of security updates was the same as before I started, even
though I successfully updated some of the entries before, almost like my RPM
database is messed up.

Could it have something to do with the RPM database? maybe it needs to be
rebuilt before installing the new security updates? (I'm not at my linux
box to try it now...). I am running Mandrake 7.2, 2.2.17 kernel. This was
under KDE 2.01.

Can someone tell me what the command is to update the RPM database?

Thanks,
Kevin

Just run Mandrake Update, and it will give you a list of all available and
applicable security patches for your system. Choose "Select All", then "Do
Updates", and it's all automated from there...

Re: [newbie] 2.4 Kernel

2001-01-12 Thread Kevin Tambascio

Well, part of my problems is that the SCSI card drivers and sound card
drivers are not part of the standard linux-mandrake distribution, so I had
to download drivers to work with Mandrake 7.2 out of the box. When I tried
to use the source or binaries from the 2.2.17 based drivers, they didn't
work under 2.4, so at the least I need to recompile them or download new
sources.

One thing that I did notice, was that some of the options that I expected to
be turned "on" by default were turned "off" this time (The last kernel I
compiled was 2.2.16). Things like the VFAT support. make sure you go
through whatever configuration tool you use carefully for differences.

Thanks,
-Kevin

Not to bash the 2.4 upgrade, but it didn't sound like it went all that
well
for you. I don't think a newbie could have done what you have done, that
is, without some serious help. Hopefully the upgrades will get better
over
 time.

 Subject: [newbie] 2.4 Kernel

 Hi,

Have any of your tried the 2.4 kernel yet? I tried to install and compile
it last night, and had some success. I was able to reboot into the new
kernel, but I had some error messages about loading FAT partitions, turned
out I hadn't built in the VFAT into the kernel or module. I couldn't get
my
USB scanner (EPSON Perfection 610) working right away, I have to figure
out
what is happening. I was able to get my scanner working sometimes with
2.2.17. My SCSI card needs a new driver (Tekram 315), and I need to d/l a
2.4 based Vortex 1 driver. My Ethernet card was not immediately working.
I
had to reselect in DrakConf that I needed the Tulip driver. After that,
an
insmod tulip, ifup eth was all I needed to get it working. Other than
those
things, KDE came up OK, and nothing else unusual was apparent.

Would any other users care to share their experience so far?

 -Kevin

Re: [newbie] Linksys LNE100tx v4.0

2000-12-21 Thread Kevin Tambascio

I have the same card at home, and I was able to use it with the driver from
the website. I don't remember what version that I used though. The driver
on the installation disk didn't work at all, but the one I downloaded does.
Mine built fine, and then installing it was simple, using the instructions
they provided.

what have you tried to do so far? Were you able to compile the code at all?

Per the website, it uses the tulip driver. The card works as it should it
Win98. I have followed the instructions I have found at Deja.com
regarding
this issue. Apparently versions earlier than 4 work ok, but 4.0 4.1 do
not.
I do not have a different card to use, but I am considering just getting
one
and dumping the linksys. I am sure it is a good card, but $20.00 is not
 worth my time.

Need a little more information to be helpful. Are you sure that it uses
the
tulip driver? Have you tried running kudzu? Do you know that your network
card is not bad? Have you tried using a different network card? Does the
driver load? Is the driver built correctly?

 Cheers,

Does anyone know how to get Mandrake 7.2 to recognize this card. I have
tried to compile a new tulip.o module, but have been unsuccessful. I have
gone to the Linksys website and downloaded the most current drivers and
was
unsuccessful. Linux-mandrake.com has yet to post a fix on their web site.
I have tried now for better than a day screwing around with 7.2

 Any help would be appreciated.

[newbie] 2.2.18 Kernel for Mandrake

2000-12-13 Thread Kevin Tambascio

I would like to upgrade to the 2.2.18 kernel to try and get my USB scanner
working under Linux. I looked in the Mandrake 7.2 updates folder, as well
as the Cooker FTP site (it seems like they only have 2.4.x kernels), but I
couldn't find the source. Should I download the kernel from www.kernel.org,
or do I have to use a Mandrake version of the kernel? Does anyone know
where I can download the Mandrake version of 2.2.18, if it exists?

Thanks,
Kevin
