Re: [newbie] how about CompuServe for Linux?

Wow, AmiPro, that is going back in the day. I thought they were bought by IBM
and then they renamed the product WordPro. :) For some reason I believe
Applixware does do the conversion. You will have to check the website to be
sure though. There prices are getting kinda out of hand though.

Time to reply!

Quoting Adrian Smith ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
with all this AOL talk, does anyone out there know if CompuServe (owned by AOL of
course) has a Linux software? CS is my main email address and if the world were
perfect there would be a CS program that could read my current address book email
folders and then life would be good.

 and while i'm asking
anyone know of a Linux word processor that can read files created in:
 Ami Pro 3.0 *.sam
 MS Works 4.5 *.wps *.wks

StarOffice doesn't do either of these directly... i'd have to convert the orignals
to RTF or something those have been my main writing tools for years years, and
since i'm a writer me gots loads of files in those formats.

 oh yea... and...
no just kidding, i'll save that question for after i get netscape updated to the
latest greatest. maybe it will fix =)

 thanks all

Re: [newbie] 7.1 -- 2-CD download mystery -- How?

Which site did you download the iso from. I have been having trouble
downloading them since it came out. I can't seem to get any of the sites
on the website to connected and I have a cable modem.

I'd recommend you find a friend with a fast connection and a CD-R (or
CD-RW) drive. I don't really want to offer to do this for anyone online
since I could get flooded with requests and have to play
pick-and-choose.
If a person sent me 2 CD-R's, the mailer to mail them with, and the
money to cover the postage back to them (or have the stamps put on the
return mailer yourself before you send it) then I'd be willing to burn
.iso's to CD-R for a few people. I might do 1 or 2 per week like that,
but with only a 2x burner, I can't offer to do it a lot.

  Dear friends:

Well, as it turns out, there seems to be NO WAY to download the new
Mandrake 7.1 by FTP. Since 7.1 is on two CD rather than one CD, there is
a pause during the download install that has completely stumped me (and
probably others). I selected Custom, Normal for download and all of the
categories (except for the extra "Documentation" category) for a total
of 2.2 Gig or 764 packages. Each time (once from rpmfind a few days ago
and today from metalab.unc.edu), I got precisely the same results: the
download pauses on the file "kpppload", with nearly exactly half of the
packages still waiting to be downloaded, and suddenly moves on to the
next stage of install, namely, "Installing packages," "select your time
zone,", "configure your printer," etc. etc. until you get the ironic
message : Mandrake 7.1 successfully installed (which it most certainly
is NOT, as you find out if you try to use it).

Earlier tonight, a kind list member explained this mystery to us: the
first CD stops precisely here at "kpppload" and asks you to insert the
  second CD.

Well, that's fine and dandy if you have the CD's (I am still waiting for
mine from LinuxLand). But what do you do if you are trying to download
and install MDK 7.1 by FTP?

I tried to download a minimal version (700 megs). Same problem.

I then tried to download an even more minimal version without KDE,
hoping to then return and upgrade and install KDE last. Again, same
problem. In fact, it refused to let me install at all without installing
KDE (where it once again stopped at precisely kpppload). In desperation,
I decided to download Mandrake with KDE ONLY (300 Megs) and then build
on that. No dice! Once again, with 3:20 to go and many packages left, it
once again stopped at kpppload and proceeded to "finish" the rest of the
installation process as if nothing had happened!

So, how do the rest of you do it? What' the secret formula, folks?

  Thank you so much.

By default root cannot login remotely. It is not suggested to do this as
it is a security risk. This can be gotten around if you really need to do
it by editing /etc/securetty file.

As for the problem with X windows, not sure what is causing that as I have
the graphic log in and have no problems login in as root.

Re: [newbie] RPMs Go Where?

2000-03-01 Thread Mandrake Account

before installing the rpm, go to a xterm session, cd to the directory that
has the RPM you want installed and try doing this.

rpm -qipl ..rpm |more

this will show you just about everything about the rpm.

Go to the desktop configurator in XWindows, it gives you the option in

RE: [newbie] People who get LI at boot up rather than LILO BOOT:

Actually when the LI pops up it usually means that the /boot part of Linux
is no install within the first 1024 cylinder of the hard drive. Take a
look the docs and it will probably point you on how to fix this. I
personally have a tripe boot system with a 25Gb hard drive and I created a
boot disk instead of LILO due to the fact linux is installed on the last
10Gb which means LILO won't be able to boot to it. This is a normal
problem, but can be fixed with some work and planning.

This is almost certainly a problem with hard drive geometry. You should
open up your PC and look at the label glued onto it, and make a
note of the number of cyliners, heads and sectors. If you want a dual-boot
machine, and the windows part already works OK, then
you don't need to mess with the BIOS.

If this is not the case, have a look at the BIOS, and try setting LBA as
the hard disk addressing mode.

If this still doesn't work, boot linux from a boot floppy, edit
/etc/lilo.conf and add this line

append = "hd=cyl,hds,sctrs"

where cyl is the number of cylinders, hds is the number of heads and sctrs
is the number of sectors printed on your disk.

You might find the LILO mini HOWTO and the BOOTDISK HOWTO useful,

This card is supported in version 7.0 as well as it is supported in Red
Hat 's beta 6.2 Piglet, Although it seems that the mandrake version had
no problems with install. The Rage All in Wonder Pro 128 has problems
when it comes to the screen becoming blured and destored. It works
however if you can get through the install. :)
