RE: [newbie] Proper rpm procedure for cross-dependency?

2001-11-20 Thread Mitchell, Edmund

Thanks Mike.
The test went perfectly, but when I ran it I got an error about
a problem regenerating lilo.conf.
I edited lilo.conf, ran /sbin/lilo, and rebooted to the new kernel.
It works great. I have no explanation, but my apps are launching
WAY faster.
Somethin' musta been broke, because I don't think a kernel upgrade
can make that happen, can it?

Thanks again

Edmund

RE: [newbie] Windows XP: EXtra Proprietary

2001-10-31 Thread Mitchell, Edmund

Sad but true.

At work, I had to install XP to test my software, and I was shaking my head
that after you install XP, you have 30 days to 'activate' it with M$.
Fail to do so, and the software locks up.
Do so, and that 300$ OS is then tied to that machine - legally, even if that
machine breaks, or if you just upgrade to another machine, you have to give
M$ another 300$ for another copy.

Our 233 Mhz, 64 MB test box can _barely_ budge under the load of XP. What a
pile.

2001-10-26 Thread Mitchell, Edmund

I don't know if this'll work for you guys, but I took a stab
in the dark and now telnet works for me.
I just downloaded the new telnet rpm from rpmfind
(telnet-client-krb-1.2.2-15mdk), and
rpm -Uvh telnetblahblah
and now I'm up and running.

RE: [newbie] java and mozilla

2001-09-18 Thread Mitchell, Edmund

Hello Paul

Isaac was very helpful to me in getting that problem solved, and this is
what he said (distilled):
the command you're looking for is "ln". It works as follows: (the #'s are
just to signify the root command prompt)

 # ln [options] sourcename(s) [destination directory]

where "sourcename(s)" is the name of the file(s) you want to create
links to (in your case libjavaplugin_oji.so) and "destination directory" is
the directory you want the links to appear in (in my case it was
/usr/local/mozilla0.9.3/mozilla/plugins, yours will be pretty similar - just
make sure it ends up in /plugins)

The option you'll be using will be -s (for symbolic). So, assuming your
mozilla directory were located like mine is, the command would be:
[ed. note - Both the file to be linked and the folder need to have fully
qualified path names, as here shown:]

 # ln -s /usr/jre1.3.1/plugins/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/local/mozilla0.9.3/mozilla/plugins

Your command would only differ depending on where your mozilla folder
 is.
Anyway, after you install it you should use the simple command "ls -l
[destionation directory]" to see that your symbolic link arrived
 appropriately.
The line for the java plugin should start with the letter "l" to show
it is a link. If all seems fine and dandy then try going to someplace that
uses java
and see if you get the error message. If you do, try logging out and
 logging back in.

He also showed me a shortcut that works if you're using KDE, but this method
works regardless, so that's the one I'll pass along.

its much more than that - I'm in NYC, and the south tower of the WTC is
DOWN, and for those of you who've never seen a 100+ story building fall, let
me say it's nothing that encourages concentration on your deskjob.
Also, rumors that the mall and the pentagon in DC are hit, too.

they're evacuating us now - see ya later

RE: [newbie] Java for Mozila

2001-08-13 Thread Mitchell, Edmund

Hello Dan,
This worked for me:

Assuming you have the jdk downloaded and installed, just set a JAVA_HOME
environment variable in your .bashrc file that points to the bin directory
of your jdk:
#for example:
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/src/jdk1.3.1/bin
After a restart, StarOffice will find it automagically, or, if you haven't
restarted you can just browse to it at the appropriate point in the
StarOffice install, and it will recognize it and away you will go.

Thanks to both of you, I will try those tips.

What is supermount? What is it trying to do?
What will disabling it do to my system? What functionality
will I lose, and how can I replace it, or work around it's
loss?

Thanks again!

A little trick I learned, from a command line:
supermount -i disable

Reboot
Locks should be gone.

Apparently(somebody could clear this up for me)there is a bug in supermount?

RE: [newbie] ping

2001-08-09 Thread Mitchell, Edmund

Hello all

I'm trying to take my first steps with either MySQL or PostgreSQL, and the
documentation at those websites, while great, is hard to follow from a
Mandrake perspective (it seems the files are in different places from what
those websites say is customary, and there must be some small setup
involved, because things like 'initdb' are producing error messages implying
that all the ducks are not in a row).
Can someone point me to some LM-specific docs, or tell me the first few
steps to perform to get things going on a clean install?

Thanks

Edmund

I haven't had any troubles - everything by the book.

Hi,

Planning to install J2SDK 1.3.1. Are there any known issues on J2SDK on
LM 8.0. Kindly let me know.

[newbie] Anyone have an AMD 761 chipset and a Radeon video card working with X?

2001-08-06 Thread Mitchell, Edmund

Still doing battle, trying to get Mandrake working on my box
at home. I found a couple of other people who couldn't get
X working, and it turns out that we all have that chipset
and various Radeon cards. It's a shot in the dark, but
maybe that's the problem.
If someone has that config and has X working with LM8, I'd
love to hear from you.
